Dawgs and Kats win A.R.M. titles
WHITEFISH — The Whitefish boys held serve on their home track, winning the team title at the A.R.M. Invitational Saturday.
The Bulldogs’ rival 10 miles to the East, Columbia Falls, won the girls crown.
With Soli Bullemer winning the triple jump and pole vault — the Wildkats’ only two victories Saturday — Columbia Falls scored 98 points to 86 for Class B Missoula Loyola and 84 for the Whitefish girls. Polson was a close fourth, scoring 79 points.
The Whitefish boys scored 101 points, with Columbia Falls second at 88 and Loyola next at 72. The Bigfork Vikings were fourth at 67.
The Kats had some depth behind Bullemer, who hit her season best in the triple jump, marking 34 feet 10 inches (No. 3 in Class A), and won the vault on criteria. She and Polson’s Kellyn Nelson both cleared 10-0.
Athletes like Shelby Norman (third in the pole vault), Findley Dezzani (third in the 1,600) and Chloe Savoy, Mya Badger and Mila Johns (3-4-5 in the 800) helped Columbia Falls pile up the points.
Whitefish’s Rachael Wilmot won the 100 meters in a quick 12.66 seconds and the 400 in 58.38 — a season best and the best mark in Class A.
The Bulldogs also saw Sierra Gibb win the 3,200 and took the short relay; junior Sol Holmquist PR’d while finishing second in the javelin at 111-3 and is now among the Class A leaders.
Libby’s Capri Farmer, a freshman, set personal records while winning both the 800 (2:24.7) and 1,600 (5:18.72). Both times are among the top four in Class A.
Loyola’s Allison Gama swept the hurdles races and won the high jump; she (15.26) and teammate Sophia Berry (15.46) went 1-2 in the 100 hurdles — and sit 2-3 in Class B in that event. Behind that tandem Whitefish freshman Ginger Bergland clocked 16.12, which sits second in Class A.
Berry also won the 200 in 26.17 seconds, No. 2 in B, and she and Gama helped the Breakers run the fastest 400 relay (50.13) in their class while finishing second to Whitefish.
Plains standout Alexis Deming swept the shot put and discus.
Browning’s Teslin Trombley won the long jump with a season-best 16-3.5; the junior also ran a PR of 26.89 in the 200, finishing second.
The Bulldog boys got a big day from senior Simon Douglas — he PR’d in both the 1,600 and 3,200, winning both — as well as Carson Gulick and Colby Minton.
Minton, a sophomore, won the 200 meters in 22.90 seconds, with Eureka’s Josh Lambertsen (23.2) and Whitefish’s Riley Zetooney (23.23) also hitting PRs. Zetooney was also third in the 100, which Plains’ Luciano Ferranti won in 11.37.
Douglas won the 3,200 in 10:04.05 and the 1,600 in 4:21.88, with wide margins in both races. His time in the 1,600 leads Class A; he sits No. 4 in the 3,200.
Gulick clocked 42.98, his best ever, to win the 300 hurdles. He was second in the 110 hurdles, running 15.76 to David Chapman of Hot Springs (15.69).
A lot of boys had big days. Beyond Chapman the only individual winners who didn’t PR were Bigfork’s Tamret Savik in the triple jump, David DiGiallonardo in the 800 and Libby’s Tristan Andersen in the javelin.
Andersen still hit a season best of 165-4.5; Savik’s triple of 45-0.5 was five inches short of his PR set a week ago.
DiGiallonardo clocked 2:00.62, his second straight race under 2:01.
His teammate Astin Brown continues to dazzle in the shot put ring — on Saturday the Pirates’ senior threw 61-10.5, by far the best mark in Montana for all classes.
Meanwhile Columbia Falls senior Lane Voermans, who was second in the shot, threw the discus 181-2 — which also sets the pace by quite a ways for Class A and is second only to Gallatin’s Jack Murray (183-8) in Montana.
Brown was third in the discus, a half-inch behind Thompson Falls’ Braeden Ferris (162-11.5, the best mark in Class B).
Isak Soyland cleared 13-6 in the pole vault, leading a 1-2 Wildcat finish in that event with Oliver Kress, who went 13-0 Saturday after clearing 13-9 on April 15. Eureka’s Lambertsen was third.
The Wildcats’ Stanley Stremick (21-3.75, third in A) and Kanen Brickert went 1-3 in the long jump. In between was Bigfork’s Tamret Savik.
Stremick was also third in the triple jump.
Bigfork also had wins and PRs from Alex Ochs in the high jump (5-10) and Austin Savik in the 400 (52.15). Eureka’s Cole Sartori was a close second in the 400 at 52.30, a PR.
