William Conrad Winders, 69, informally known as "Topper," passed away in Kalispell on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, at Logan Healthcare.

Topper was born on June 10, 1955, in Southern California to his father, William, a Christian book illustrator, and his mother, Esther, a world and church history college professor.

In his youth, he attended Village Christian High School and later pursued studies in oceanography and atmospheric science. He went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard as an aviation mechanic and search and rescue pilot. Following an honorable discharge, he continued his passion for aviation as a helicopter instructor at Van Nuys Airport.

Topper was a natural entrepreneur, building several businesses across various industries, including real estate, firearms sales, exotic car sales, storage units, and a consignment center.

Though he was born in California, his love for the outdoors eventually brought him to the Big Sky State of Montana. He had a deep appreciation for hiking, camping, and spending time on the lake. He also enjoyed classic films, studied martial arts, and pursued many hands-on hobbies, including gardening, construction, electrical work, and fishing. A true jack-of-all-trades, he was known for his wide-ranging knowledge and skills.

Above all, Topper cherished his family, including his two adult children. He was a fiercely independent person who inspired those around him to always try their best, never give up in the face of failure, and temper strength with respect and kindness.
