Bigfork Playhouse Children’s Theatre opens auditions for musical comedy

Bigfork Playhouse Children's Theatre is seeking children in grades second through sixth to audition Jan. 7 for an upcoming production of the musical comedy, “When in Rome.” 

This hilarious adventure follows three peasant thieves who sneak into the royal palace, leading to a story filled with mistaken identities, romance, and gladiatorial hijinks.  The trio of colorful characters includes the lovable “dorkus supremus,” Gladis; Minimus, known as “Mini” to his friends and Julia, who attempt to help a princess avoid an unwanted marriage through an elaborate scheme involving the Roman games.  

The production features roles for 11 females, five males, and a chorus of muses and Romans. No prior theater experience is necessary. 

The show will also feature musical numbers ranging from the comedic “I Could Be Royalty” to the show-stopping “Last Gladiator Standing.” 

Auditions for children in grades second and third will start at 4:30 p.m. Grades fourth, fifth and sixth will audition from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Bigfork Center for the Performing Arts, 833 Grand Drive. 

Children wanting to audition are asked to prepare a 30-second monologue or short selection from another play or book. Children should be prepared to learn and sing a song at the audition. Wear comfortable shoes for movement exercises. If cast, there is a $60 participation fee. Scholarships are available. 

There are also positions available for children interested in the technical side of theater and may sign up during auditions to help with set construction, props, costumes, lights and sound. 

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb. 1, 7 and 8. A 2 p.m. performance is also planned Feb. 2.
