Flathead Sweeps

A double dose of Coles-Chivers battles highlighted Crosstown wrestling Thursday.

While Glacier’s Coles brothers came out on top in their battles, Flathead got the last laugh as the Braves Brawlers won their 83rd consecutive dual — extending the second longest streak in state history — 57-21 over their crosstown rivals at Flathead High School.

“Really happy for our seniors to go out on a high note like that,” Flathead coach Jeff Thompson said. “I feel like we wrestled really well, they had a couple hammers there with the Coles, but I feel like we did our best. Sometimes you need to lose to know what you need to work on to get better, and I know those guys will do that.”

Flathead started hot with Hunter Arriaga (132 pounds), Daniel Evert (138) and Aiden Downing earning pins — Downing’s in just 14 seconds — and paired that with a forfeit at 126 for a 24-0 lead.

“The JV boys really got the momentum going for our varsity boys,” Thompson said. “When you start out the dual with a 59-0 JV score. ... Our varsity boys were so fired up and confident. Super proud of our JVs. They will come in handy at State where we can qualify two wrestlers at every weight.”

The Wolfpack got on the board as Jerin Coles picked up a first-round pin over Brett Chivers at 144.

Two matches later Jerin’s brother, top-ranked Niko Coles, squared off with Brett’s brother Lane Chivers at 165. Coles once again got the edge using a late takedown and near-fall to get an 11-1 major decision for the No. 3-ranked wrestler in AA.

“Jerin is just wrestling at another level right now,” Glacier coach Ross Dankers said. “He is blowing out people, it’s fun to watch. And Niko, if he can open them up as the match goes on, he extends his lead a bit.”

The Braves got a big boost at 190 where Kohen Rilley pinned No. 4-ranked Mark Ahner in the second round to put Flathead up 39-10.

“We bumped up a couple kids, we have a couple kids bunched up at 165,” Dankers said. “It makes it a little tough when you’ve got two tough kids going at it and we are a bit undersized. I think that kind of hurt us a bit.”

Glacier finished the night with Noah Horn pinning Blane Olsen at 285; then No. 2 ranked Aidan Sweat earning a technical fall over Dayton Naldrett at 110.

“That’s a match that he (Sweat) was hoping to get against Naldrett and he dominated,” Dankers said.

For the girls, Flathead used pins from top-ranked wrestlers Bella Downing and Julia Kay to grab a 66-12 victory.

“On Tuesday, we weren’t quite prepared,” Bravettes coach Amber Downing said. “So that has been our focus the past two days, our mindset. They showed up tonight and I am very proud of them.”

Downing started things strong for the Bravettes with a pin just 52 seconds into the first match over Mikaela Julius.

Kay followed that up two matches later, pinning Glacier’s Ella Labrum with two seconds left in the first period.

Brynn Mailman and Kiera Lackey also earned pins for Flathead.

Katelyn Sphuler nabbed the first win for the Glacier girls, pinning Flathead’s Ella Counts at 100 pounds. Brooke Yeadon got the other via forfeit at 110.

“The girls didn’t match up that great,” Dankers said. “It would have been nice to get Brooke a match.”
