Charlie Chaplin silent film slated for Movie Night at the Museum

| January 23, 2025 12:00 AM

Movie Night at the Museum brings Charlie Chaplin’s 1925 comedy “The Gold Rush” to the big screen Jan. 28.

Chaplin starred, wrote, produced and directed the silent film that also features Georgia Hale, Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Henry Bergman and Malcolm Waite.

Chaplin considered this film one of his best and often cited it as the one for which he hoped he would be remembered. He was inspired by photographs of the Klondike Gold Rush and the story of the ill-fated Donner Party, which was stranded in the mountains of California in 1846. Using his trademark Little Tramp persona, Chaplin combined history and tragedy to tell a story of the dangers and pitfalls faced by people in their quest for gold.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie starts at 7 p.m. Admission and popcorn are free. Donations will be accepted to help defray the costs of Movie Night. Soda, water, beer and wine are available for purchase. Seating is provided, but viewers are welcome to bring their own cushions or seating.

Marking its 25-year anniversary, the Northwest Montana History Museum brings the past alive through exhibits, artifacts, educational programs, and events. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. For more information call 756-8381.
