Donald Smith, 83
Don left his earthly life for his heavenly life on Jan. 22, 2025, as a result of the progression of dementia.
Don was born, raised and educated in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was a true Hoosier.
Don or Coach, as he was called by his close friends and family, was loved by many. He was truly the most kind and generous man, bringing light and humor to the lives of everyone he touched. In his fifty years as a basketball coach, he worked diligently with a smile on his face, never dreading a single day. Along with his respect for every person's opinion, he believed wholeheartedly in second and third chances.
Among so many other things, Don enjoyed fishing in the Florida Keys or Montana lakes and streams with his friends, his wife, his kids and grandkids, believing that beer while fishing was really the best hydration, along with a good cigar. Also, he believed that dogs should definitely sleep on the bed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Vera Smith, and his children, Brennen Smith of North Carolina and Rebecca Fortier of Florida. Also, his grandchildren, Dean Fortier of Washington and Everett Fortier of Florida.
A service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 2048 Conn Road, Columbia Falls, at 11a.m on Friday, April 25, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, he would appreciate a remembrance to either The Flathead Warming Center or the Humane Society of Northwest Montana, or a non-profit of your choice.
