Flathead County Animal Control Officer Jennifer Benware carries a Labrador retriever mix into the impoundment area at the county animal shelter Friday afternoon. Benware picked up the dog after it was found running in busy traffic along East Reserve Drive. Amid recent staff shortages, Benware has been spending part of her time helping in the front office of the shelter. The county commissioners have recently decided to put the shelter under the jurisdiction of the Flathead County City-County Health Department. Last year, the county shelter took in 1,663 dogs, of which 562 were adopted, 573 went back to owners and 436 were euthanized. Karen Nichols photos/Daily Inter Lake
