Lester Smith of Kalispell is reflected in Col. D.J. Neary’s painting, “Iwo Jima — 19 February 1945.” Smith, who enlisted in the Marines following the attack on Pearl Harbor, spent 36 days in a foxhole during the vicious fighting on Iwo Jima in 1945.
