Wayne Herman, one of the founding members of the Flathead Coalition, shows a sample of coal he collected from an open seam at the Cabin Creek mining site in 1975. That mine proposal stirred up a grass-roots resistance that has persisted ever since to protect Montana’s water quality, fisheries and wildlife.
