Detail of a Maple tree changing colors with the autumn season on the 700 block of 4th Street East in Kalispell. The tree is one of several that were planted along the roadway by residents after the city agreed to remove the stumps from Dutch Elm trees that died due to disease. According to Patricia Johnson, they residents planted a variety of trees because during this process they learned that a diversity of trees makes for a healthier system.
