Detail of the canvases of one of Allen Daffern’s ships. On the real ships the sails would not have been a single solid sheet, but rather would have been strips of material that had been sown together. To recreate that visually Daffern cuts the full size for the sail, but then adds stitching to create the look of pieces that had been sewn together.
