Detail of the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship of the United States Navy. In the history of the ship it was lovingly given the nickname “Old Ironsides.” The ship was launched in 1797 and was named by President George Washington. The USS Constitution is the world’s oldest commissioned naval vessel that is still afloat. Like the HMS Victory, Old Ironsides was retired from active service in 1881, and became a museum.
