SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A powerful wind storm rolled through the Pacific Northwest, killing one person and leaving a trail of damage -- including a highway shut down after a landslide and a tractor-trailer that was nearly blown off a bridge. More than 500,000 people lost power.

ImagineIF cancels public services due to virus

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, ImagineIF Libraries has canceled all public services, such as early literacy classes, teen and adult programming and events, and Wired Wednesdays in Columbia Falls. Use of the meeting room at ImagineIF Kalispell is also suspended, as well as Job Service coaching, Book-a-Techie services, and class visits. This suspension is in effect at all locations for 30 days, the library system announced Friday evening.

Elaine Joy Cuklanz Cowan, 68

Elaine Joy Cuklanz Cowan, 68, of Polson, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at St. Joseph Hospital in Polson. Elaine was born on April 18, 1941, in Estherville, Iowa, the daughter of (the late) Fred and Doris Hannover Cuklanz. Elaine made education a priority and earned several degrees beginning in 1964 at the University of Iowa, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in general science and medical technology, the Radioisotope Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., receiving an NM (ASCP) in nuclear medicine technology in 1965; and later returned to the University of Iowa in 1968 to earn her master s degree in science education and radiobiology. In 1975, Elaine became involved with the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology, which accredits educational programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology. Later, in 1981, Elaine became the executive director of the committee until her retirement in 2007. During this time span, Elaine s dedication to the field earned her much recognition in the nuclear medical society. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Polson and a member of the PEO Ladies Group, which promotes the educational opportunities of women. Elaine loved to travel with her husband in their motor home and had the privilege of having traveled to both the Arctic and Antarctica. Besides her parents, two brothers, George and Walter Cuklanz, preceded Elaine in death. Those left with cherished memories are her husband, John S. Cowan, of Polson; two stepchildren, John G. Cowan of Denver, and Wendy Windham of Roy, Wash.; and a brother, Harland Cuklanz, of Witbraham, Mass. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Grogan Funeral Home, 101 Sixth Ave. E., in Polson. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Polson, with Rev. Paul Rowold officiating. Interment will occur in Elaine s hometown of Estherville, Iowa, at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made as a donation to the Greater Polson Community Foundation, P.O. Box 314, Polson, MT 59860. Norman MacGregor Mac Rugheimer, 79

Norman MacGregor Mac Rugheimer, Ph.D., 79, formerly of Kalispell and Bozeman, died peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 4, 2010, at home with his daughter Sarah and son-in-law Christian Schmid, in Cambridge, Mass. Mac was born in Charleston, S.C., on Feb. 10, 1930, as the only child of Norman and Helen Rugheimer. At the young age of 16, he began university at the College of Charleston and went on to earn his Ph.D. in physics from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In 1964, he started teaching physics and mathematics in Bozeman at Montana State University, and became assistant dean of the College of Letters and Science at MSU. Despite his many accomplishments, he preferred to be called Mac rather than Dr. His passion for holography " three-dimensional photography with lasers " brought him a patent and the opportunity to travel the world, sharing his love of science with students everywhere. Even after retirement, Mac took his holographic road show to high schools, inspiring additional generations. Thousands of his students exclaimed, Mac is the best teacher I ever had! Mac eventually relocated to Kalispell where he dedicated his time and interests to Bible study, learning Hebrew, and his church communities. In his later years, Mac resided at Greenwood Village Assisted Living, supported by the attentive staff and owners. Right until the end, he exercised regularly at The Summit, making many friends and inspiring people who knew him with his dedication, optimism, and cheerful smile. Mac is survived by two sons, Peter and wife Lynn, and Paul and wife Stacey; two daughters, Mary Wictor and husband Johan, and Sarah Rugheimer and husband Christian Schmid; former wives, Hallie and Linda; and five grandsons, Erik, Alexander, Levi, Jackson and Nathan. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, at the United Methodist Church in Columbia Falls; and at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Evangelical Free Church in Bozeman. Reynold John Unger, 80

Reynold John Unger passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at the age of 80, at his home in Polson. He was surrounded by family, and died peacefully after battling cancer. He was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Poplar, the fourth of six children to John and Minnie Unger. Reynold graduated from Savage High School 1947. In 1954 he married Sylvia Joanne Martinson in Kalispell. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and was stationed in Germany. After discharge from the Army, he returned to ranching in Polson and later continued ranching in Plains, Huntington, Ore., and Vale, Ore. In 2001 he returned to Polson to retire. Reynold enjoyed visiting with family and friends, fishing, playing pinochle, traveling, and he always had a joke to tell. He had a lifelong interest in 4-H that started in childhood and continued throughout his ranching life. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. His faith in God was the center of his life and he was active in the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church as a council member and an elder for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Minnie Unger; and brother, Lawrence Unger. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sylvia Joanne Unger; and five children, Elaine and Bill McLean, Karen Nunn, John and Sandra Unger, Paul and Kristen Unger, and Sandy and Tim Webb; three sisters, Marie Leivestad of Cartwright, N.D., Martha Kroemer of Billings, and Rosalia Skaar of Sidney; a brother, Edward, and JoMay Unger, of Polson; along with 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Grogan Funeral Home in Polson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, with Rev. M. Kaarre officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Polson. Jack M. Meuli, 77

Jack M. Meuli, 77, of Dayton, passed away on Feb. 25, 2010, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, from natural causes. Jack was born on Oct. 28, 1932, in Missoula to Melville and Laura Meuli. He attended elementary school in Proctor and graduated from Polson High School in 1950. Jack attended Montana State University where he met his future wife, Lois, while working on the school annual. While at college, he made lifetime friends as a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. Jack graduated in 1954 with a degree in agriculture. He was in the ROTC program while attending MSU and served in the U.S. Army until 1957. On June 17, 1956, Jack married Lois Ann Ward in Billings. After his service in the Army, Jack and Lois returned to establish a ranch near Dayton in the Proctor Valley. They raised their family, daughter Jean, and son Mike, on the ranch. Jack enjoyed ranching and stayed active on the ranch his whole life. Jack was an involved member in the community and enjoyed playing cribbage and pinochle with his family and friends. Jack s focus was on his family, the ranch and the community, and he was an active leader in both the local and ranch communities. He was a member of the Proctor School board, and past president of and member of the Western Montana Stockmen s Association. He also served on the board of directors of the Montana Stockgrowers Association and was a member of the National Cattlemen s Association. Jack was also a longtime member and past chairman of the Lake County Planning board, member of the Lake County Conservation board and served on the Crimestoppers board. Jack was a founding member of the Chief Cliff Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Session and the Parish Council at the Dayton Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lois; and his parents, Mel and Laura. He is survived by two children and their families, daughter, Jean, and Pat, Kunz of Bellevue, Wash.; and son, Mike, and Nancy, Meuli of Dayton; six grandchildren, Zack, Mike and Joey Kunz, and John Michael, Matthew and Mikayla Meuli. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 6, at the New Life Christian Center in Polson with Presbyterian Pastor Dave Anson officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
