A full house of mainly women cheered Wednesday as former clients of Abbie Shelter strutted fresh makeovers and the latest fashions down a runway at a benefit for the battered women’s shelter.

Donald G. Brown, 70

Donald G. Brown, 70, passed away from cancer Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at The Heritage House in Kalispell, after a short illness. Don was born April 5, 1939, in Libby to Clarence and Lois (Driear) Brown. He graduated from Libby High School in 1957, and served in the Army Reserves at Fort Leonardwood, Mo., for six months. He was married to Marlys (Barr) Brown for 25 years. Three children were born from their marriage. During this time, Don worked at J. Neils Lumber Co. for a short period of time before purchasing a dump truck and loader. He later sold them and bought a logging truck. Brown Heavy Hauling was established and he built a shop north on Highway 37 where he managed his business of hauling logs and moving heavy equipment. Don and Marlys marriage was dissolved in 1984. Don moved to Kalispell and later married Betty Schneider. They purchased the Central School and built the Pro Clean Carwash. Don had several ventures during this time including driving truck for Roger Claridge. Betty passed away in November 1998. Don moved back to Libby and started up a paving business which he ran for several years. Three years ago he bought Happy s Inn and he and Maxine have been running that business while remodeling. Don is survived by his special friend and partner, Maxine Domgard; his son, James Brown, and his wife, Terrie, of Moses Lake, Wash.; his daughter, Judy Mavis, and her husband, Dennis, of Hungry Horse; his son, Ron Brown, of Dundee, Ore.; his brother, Robert Brown, of Kalispell; and three grandchildren, Cory McReynolds of Columbia Falls, and Shannon McReynolds and Melissa McReynolds of Kalispell. Other family members are stepson, Sam Schneider, of Soap Lake, Wash.; stepdaughters, Linda Blankenship and Penny Scott, of Great Falls; Gail Decker of Kalispell; Faith Brewer, Neil and Karen Brewer, Bill and Phyllis Lynch, Glen and Pat Koski, and Jack and Beth Lynch, all of Kalispell; and all of his many great friends in the Libby and Kalispell areas. Dr. Larry G. Rigler, 73

Dr. Larry G. Rigler, former Iowa City resident and physician, passed away Sept. 28, 2010, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, due to respiratory failure. Private funeral services were held Oct. 1 at Pope John Paul II Church in Bigfork, with Monsignor Donald Shea officiating. Born in 1937 in Guthrie County, Iowa, he attended local schools and graduated from Guthrie Center High in 1954. He then attended Iowa State University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in economics and statistics. Upon graduation, he married Judy Struthers of Ottosen, Iowa, and the couple celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on Aug. 8th of this year. After serving six months of military service as an ROTC military officer at Fort Sill, Okla., the couple returned to Iowa where he completed his master s degree in agricultural economics. He then had two analyst marketing jobs, with Indiana Farm Bureau Co-op in Indianapolis, and the Toni Company in Chicago. In 1964 he attended the University of Iowa Medical School and received his MD degree in 1969. He then completed an internship at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Returning to Iowa City, he was a family physician with Medical Associates and an active Mercy Hospital staff member, until his retirement in 1999. That same year, he and Judy moved to West Bend, Iowa, near Judy s hometown of Ottosen. They enjoyed traveling, especially in the West. The couple built a home on Flathead Lake near Glacier Park, and spent many memorable family summers together. The couple have two children, Collin of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and Diana McClaran and Tim of Belgrade, both Iowa City High graduates; and, in addition, four grandchildren, Nick, 15; Max, 14; Ford, 11; and Lucy, 9. His father, Leo Rigler; and his brother, Gerald Rigler (Laurie) preceded him in death. His mother Marie Rigler, and sister Roma Stetzel and Barry, currently reside in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Larry s brother, Dr. Wilson Rigler and Linda of Centerville Iowa, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins survive him. Besides being a dedicated doctor, husband and father, he possessed interests in agriculture, photography, amateur radio, history, politics, traveling and helping others. Woman doesn't kowtow to bovine bully

A pet sitter was out walking a dog on Wolf Creek Drive in Bigfork when it became interested in checking out cows along the road. Their constitutional was rudely interrupted when a man showed up and reportedly started taking pictures of her, chasing her and scolding her saying,“I am tired of you g-------- people bothering my cows,” according to a report from Flathead County Sheriff’s Office.

James M. Anderson, 79

James M. Anderson, 79, died peacefully at North Valley hospital in Whitefish on Feb. 23, 2010, with complications of emphysema. He was born May 5, 1930, in Seattle. He had been a longtime employee of the BN Railroad, retiring as assistant superintendent of transportation in Spokane in 1985. He had been a third generation railroader, beginning his career in Seattle in 1953 and furthering his work in Shelby, Vancouver, British Columbia, Klamath Falls, Ore., Whitefish, Minneapolis, Minot, N.D., and Spokane, before returning to Whitefish at his retirement. Surviving him are his wife of 57 years, Carol; sons, Scott, Mark and Tom and ex-wife Suzanne; grandchildren, Nick, Jessica and Aaron of Spokane; and Kelley and wife Dayna of Atlanta; and grandchildren Ryan and Hayley. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, Diesel and Elizabeth. His legacy is his wood carvings of a life-size cross and crucifix and Madonna in the church of St. Thomas Moore in Spokane. He enjoyed his many friends, neighbors, breakfast group and family. Prior to his illness, he was an avid hunter, short time skier, fisherman and camper. Private services will be held at a later date. Janis Lee Vasecka, 78

Janis Lee Vasecka, 78, died April 7, 2010, of complications due to a stroke she had suffered several years earlier. She was born in Melrose Park, Ill., to Helen and Harvey Munsterman. In 1951, while serving in the Women s Air Force, she met and married Edward G. Vasecka Jr., at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. They spent the next 27 years traveling around the U.S. and overseas while Ed continued in his career in the Air Force. In 1964 they were stationed in Havre and from then on they called Montana their home. Upon retirement, Ed and Jan bought a house in West Glacier and lived there happily until their health began to fail, and they moved to the Waterford in Helena to be closer to their children in December of 2009. Janis was not only a homemaker and a supportive and proud military wife, but a volunteer with the Red Cross, the Girl Scouts and eventually a volunteer in the park (VIP) at her beloved Glacier National Park. Janis is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Ed; a brother, John, in Florida; and four children, Terri Brooks and Adam of Clancy, Vicki Kulbeck and Glen of Big Sandy, Scott Vasecka of Havre, and Linnea Vasecka of Butte. She has six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Lois Landwehr; and her parents. Ruth L. Joy died peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, in Kalispell, at the age of 86. She was born on July 2, 1924, in Big Sandy, to Edward G. and Sophia (Neste) Hansen. She grew up in Big Sandy and graduated from Big Sandy High School. She later attended Northern State Teachers College in Havre where she earned a teaching certificate. She went on to teach in elementary and music in Libby and then in Whitefish in 1947, and taught third grade for many years. Ruth married John Jack Joy in June 1950. Ruth enjoyed music; she had a beautiful singing voice and led the choir at Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish for many years. She was a fantastic cook and entertainer. She also enjoyed golf, reading, playing bridge and traveling. Ruth is survived by her stepchildren, Nancy Picucci of Florence, Ariz., and Sandra and Dewey Hartman of Whitefish; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, John Jack Joy; and four brothers. Visitation will be held from noon to 6 p.m. today at Austin Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Whitefish Cemetery, with memorial services following at 2 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish. Contributions are suggested to Christ Lutheran Church Building Program or Immanuel Lutheran Home Building Program.

Gianforte appoints Thomas Pardy to Thirteenth Judicial District Court

Gov. Greg Gianforte announced Monday his appointment of Thomas Pardy to serve on the Thirteenth Judicial District for Yellowstone County. Pardy will fill the vacancy created by Thirteenth Judicial District Judge Michael G. Moses’ retirement, effective July 1, 2023, according to a news release from the Governor’s Office.
