TRANSCRIPT

00;00;00;00 - 00;00;19;21
All right. I'm here with Dave and Allison. With the Valley voices. They're here. Tell me about their upcoming show at the movies. Thanks for joining me, you guys. Yeah. You're welcome. Glad to be here. Totally. So tell me how you guys landed on this theme. We have a music committee that comes up with all the music that we do, each for each, concert.

00;00;19;24 - 00;00;38;09
And we decided that this would be really a fun one to bring the whole family in. So we started coming up with songs for From the Movies and what our favorites were, and this is where we ended. We've seen a lot of movies, you know, in our lives and, you know, some of them were some really good songs and some of the songs were better than the movies.

00;00;38;09 - 00;01;09;29
And so the ones with good songs for that. Yeah. What kind of songs can we expect to hear? Well, you can expect to hear some, some serious songs like that is, there's the Italian stuff and elephant SCA, which is from the mission, which is is almost kind of a classical piece. and then no one's everybody's heard like Oklahoma of pure imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and some of, some really fun ones, like Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, which is second longest word in the dictionary, though.

00;01;10;02 - 00;01;36;04
Oh, do you know what the longest one is? No, it's an unpronounceable disease. Yeah. Okay. All right. Yeah, that makes sense. That makes sense. I'm glad they didn't make a song about that. Right? Totally. well, tell me about. Was it is it hard to sing? Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. No, I don't think so. We grew up knowing the word, so it's definitely, you know, that's one of the songs that we're doing, you know?

00;01;36;07 - 00;01;53;21
what's what's the one? I'm blanking on the name we would do together to that we had to learn an entirely new language to save some grease. Yeah. Isn't it? Oh. From grease. This is really kind of a known language. Yeah, yeah. There's scatting in that. oh. I gotta get in there, but boop boop. Yeah, yeah, that's the one.

00;01;53;21 - 00;02;12;00
Yeah. Yeah, we had to learn that over and over and over and over just to get that right. But it's so fun. We even have dancers on that song. Oh, really? Yeah. That the at the concert is. It's going to be really fun. So tell me about the dancers. How'd you guys do that? Is that is it just a little like.

00;02;12;02 - 00;02;31;23
No, we have a, a young couple. They've been together since dancing together since high school. Oh, and they're in they're both in their 70s, and they dance. They've danced for us a couple times, and they're in the choir singing. And I said, oh, I have a song for you. And they're going to. So they're going to perform that as they're so cute together.

00;02;31;24 - 00;02;57;16
Oh my gosh. So it's really cute. Yeah. and I heard you guys also have a couple of other people joining you, some instrumentalists. Yes we have. I asked why Mizutani and Griffin Brown to come and perform with us. Why is a world renowned violinist? He is a Juilliard graduate, and he's performed for six sitting presidents and numerous, celebrities.

00;02;57;19 - 00;03;16;27
And Griffin Brown, they call him Doctor Brown because he is a doctorate in the cello and they are phenomenal. I just I love listening to them play. So and they're going to perform with us and then they're going to perform together with just them on the piano. And it's you don't want to miss it. It's just going to be so wonderful.

00;03;17;00 - 00;03;32;29
how the having the instrumentalists like adds, what does that add for the show to the show for you guys. Just add some depth to it to, you know, the singing is great and especially when you've got, you know, four parts singing in harmony. that that's fine. And then you add a little percussion that gets exciting.

00;03;33;02 - 00;03;56;18
And you had violin and, and cello. It, it begins to sound like we're approaching an orchestra. Yeah, yeah, that's kind of mean. It's a whole new dimension. And you'll just. I as a director, I hear the audience behind me, and I hear this. Yeah. The size and the walls and. And I want to turn around, say, yeah, I know I agree.

00;03;56;20 - 00;04;22;26
Isn't it cool? Yeah. so how many songs are in the program in total? About 20. Oh, yeah. It's the Valley voices is doing about 16. And then we have a smaller group called even Evensong from the Valley Voices, and they're doing 4 or 5. And then we have another barbershop group that's coming that this is made up of members of the choir, and they're going to be performing a song together too.

00;04;22;26 - 00;04;38;23
So we sing all different genres. Yeah, it's it's a little patch of heaven from, from a Disney Disney movie. Well, West and, you know, there are a few of us that have sung in barbershop groups in the past and we thought, well, let's see if we can put one together from the Valley Voices. And I believe we have.

00;04;38;28 - 00;04;57;16
Yeah. Can you tell me a little bit more about the barbershop group and, like, how you guys came together? Well, the barbershop group, classically barbershop is, is a men's, men's sort of music. And they're there for parts and they're, they're guys that sing all the parts from from the bass up to the falsetto tenor. But when you put that in a mixed chord, it's like this.

00;04;57;16 - 00;05;17;26
We've got to get women who can actually, in full voice, sing the high parts. And so it's a, it's a different, different group of voices, but the sound is very similar. and so it's. Yeah, it's sounds like barbershop. Yeah. Do you guys do something every concert? No, this is the first time it's different. So it's going to be as exciting for us as it is to be honest.

00;05;17;28 - 00;05;40;01
Yeah. and you mentioned another group. Can you tell me about the other group, the Evensong. Yeah. This is we've had even songs now in the last several years and it's a smaller group, but they, they work on memorizing their music and it's a little bit harder music that they do, but they, they're also smaller groups so they can perform at other places because it's hard to take a big choir anywhere, you know, to perform.

00;05;40;04 - 00;06;02;27
And, and they're very they're very wonderful to work with. And they're all in the valley voices. So they're in both choirs and stuff and, and we sing. It's like the mansion at Christmas time. And, and we also go to the nursing homes or assisted living and we sing their I mean, the Valley voices us too. And we just love performing for our community and even the people who can't get it there.

00;06;02;27 - 00;06;23;02
We we want to go to them so they can hear our wonderful music. Yeah, yeah. So something a little bit more challenging. Yeah. A little bit more challenging. Not not too much, but I make them memorize their music and that's hard. That is hard. Yeah. So. Well what's the make up of the Valley voices. Right now. Like what kind of membership are you guys again?

00;06;23;04 - 00;06;46;23
We have people the singers are in. I have some singers who are in their 20s and some in their 30s and 40s. I mean, all the way up to I think our oldest member is is 83. I'm not sure, but yeah. And they so we have all all experienced levels, all vocal levels. And it's just it's just they all fit in.

00;06;46;23 - 00;06;57;17
Some of them have hair. So you know a good mix. Yeah. Yeah. So I try to keep my jokes at a minimum when it comes.

00;06;57;20 - 00;07;26;10
So if anyone's interested in joining you guys it just as easy as coming to a practice. Or do you need to. Yeah. We there's no auditions necessary. We take everyone and all we we start in, like the next semester. We'll start in September. That usually the Monday after Labor Day is when we start. And if they're interested, we have a little door prize drawing coupons that if there's a concert and we notify them when the next concert is and then if they are interested, there's a little box that they check and then we we get in touch with them.

00;07;26;10 - 00;07;48;16
Usually it's me and I call them and say, hey, I want to be available. I said, oh, you know, and then they, I tell them how to get started or when we will be getting started. And it's just so, so much fun. And each semester we start with, we have a new group of songs that we sing, and we learn those all within the ten, 12 weeks we have and sing them in the concert.

00;07;48;23 - 00;08;08;18
So it's easiest if the new members start at the beginning of one of the more semesters. although we have some of the jump in in the middle to do just fine. Yeah, okay. They do. It depends on their their musical level, you know, but they need some. We've had some pretty accomplished singers who just joined like within the last month or so, and then they just jump right in.

00;08;08;20 - 00;08;32;12
It's amazing that, you know, so I'm it just makes me so thrilled. And, you know, I can hardly contain myself half the time. And. It's just it's, music is music is everything to me, you know, because it depends on, you know, I mean, if you're having a bad day or a good day or whatever, you come to one of our concerts, you you leave singing really happy.

00;08;32;17 - 00;08;54;29
We, we find I listen to a very entertaining director and, you know, I generally try and contain myself and concentrate on the music, but I have noticed others that have kind of just lost it. Laughing in her efforts to. Got to keep things light, you know, and then music just it just brings a lot of. Yeah. But you know, and actually, my family doesn't think I'm very funny.

00;08;55;02 - 00;09;20;29
Oh, but the choir does. I think I'm a stand up comic, you know, and I'm really not. But they just think it's because music is everything. It is, you know, it covers all bases and doesn't matter how how intimidated you are from music or other singers or whatever, when we're just one big family and, and I just make them all laugh and if you can't laugh at your mistakes and you, then you can't learn from them.

00;09;20;29 - 00;09;45;03
And they make mistakes, you know, and I and I let them know when they make mistakes. Yeah, you she does. And she, she lets us know if she catches us not watching her. Which which is frequently. Yeah. I remember that from my marching band days. Yeah. You got to be paying attention. Oh, definitely. And I try to catch them not paying attention, you know.

00;09;45;03 - 00;10;05;21
And then there's then they really. Because I want them to remember that. Oh, she's going to pull that on me again I better not I better watch her. You know. Yeah. So what do you guys, get up to in the summer time? Do we? We don't really. Performance summer. We we take the summer off. I have a a meeting in June for the next semester.

00;10;05;21 - 00;10;25;00
We plan the music for the next semester. And how can we taught this? And how can we draw more audience members in and work? What can we do? Our, you know, what venue can we use? And it's just it's just all so exciting. Yeah, well, maybe we can just wrap it up with, can you guys tell me when people can catch this great show?

00;10;25;02 - 00;10;45;18
Well, it's going to be, weekend after this coming one. Saturday, the 27th of April. It's 7:00 in the evening, and then we've got a matinee performance on Sunday, 3:00 on the afternoon of April 28th. And, you don't need tickets. Just come with Glacier High Auditorium and we'll be there. And, we'll be singing. Yeah.

00;10;45;18 - 00;10;53;03
