Montana State Wildlife officials trapped and euthanized a black bear at a Northwest Montana campground on Monday after it broke into a vehicle window to get food in a cooler Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks received reports of the bear getting into unsecured food at the flat National Forest imry Bay Campground and Goose head dispersed camping site also known as fkl on the North End of the Hungry Horse Reservoir conflicts included breaking a window of a vehicle to access a cooler and getting into a tent at Erry Bay a camper was cided for disobeying the Flathead Forest food storage order Montana Fish Wildlife and park set traps July 4th and the Hungry Horse Ranger District closed the camping sites State officials captured the male bear on July 8th and euthanized it due to so-called food conditioning the Hungry Horse ranger district later lifted the area closure food conditioned and habituated bearers are those that have sought and obtained unnatural Foods destroyed Properties or displayed aggressive non- defensive Behavior towards humans according to officials once a bear has become food conditioned hazing and aversive conditioning are unlikely to be successful in reversing this type of behavior food conditioned and habituated bears are not relocated due to human safety concerns smoke jumpers on Thursday July 4th attacked a small wildfire that cropped up in a forested area of rural Sanders County the 4 acre fish trap fire on the L National Forest North of Thompson Falls was quickly contained on Friday after showing moderate Behavior the initial tack included 10 smoke jumpers and firefighting Crews from PL from the planes Thompson Falls ranger district and the Montana dnrc a 20 person type two crew and two helicopters helped contain the fire and were mopping up on Friday the cause of the fire was unknown the incident was among a few small blazes detected across Western Montana on Thursday the Timber Creek incident in Western Mineral County the scho Acres Road incident in Sanders County and the mm 85 incident west of Missoula were each less than one acre in size officials said the school Access Road fire possibly started from an old burn pile fire danger was rated low on the flad national forest and moderate on the low low Forest on Friday however hot and dry conditions are expected to develop across the region heat advisory is issued for the lower Clark Fork region of Western Montana through July 13th the Region's homeless population declined over the past year according to a survey conducted over the winter months but nonprofit leaders say they have seen no reduction in demand for services the annual point in time survey is a account led by the federal department for Housing and Urban Development and is required for its Continuum of Care Program which addresses homelessness by providing funding for efforts by nonprofit providers and state and local governments all of Montana's participating Outreach programs fall under the same Continuum of Care Program and each area is responsible for administering the survey each winter in Northwest Montana the survey incompasses the entire Flathead Valley all the way down to Ronan in 2024 participants counted 199 homeless people as compared to 263 in 2023 86 respondents reported being an emergency shelter 76 reported sleeping in a traditional house and 37 reported being unsheltered on a particular January night survey results show a total of 37 individuals under the age of 18 experiencing homelessness with an even split of children between the ages of 5 and 12 and teens between 13 and 17 years old there were seven children counted under the age of four overall the state of Montana counted 2008 homeless individuals in 2024 compared to 2,178 in 2023 while the flaad Valley and Mission Valley area saw a drop Missoula had an increase of nearly 100 people despite the drop homeless shelter leaders were hesitant to proclaim a victory the survey had previously been administered at the winter warm-up event which was hosted by the Northwest Montana United Way in partnership with other Outreach groups in the valley but the count instead took place at several pop-up events throughout Flathead County this year Shan O'Neal with Community Action partners ship of Northwest Montana said letting people know about the surveys is best done through word of mouth and that they might have missed some opportunities to talk to people because of the rotating locations Community Action Partnership is part of collaborative Housing Solutions of Northwest Montana a Consortium of Social Service organizations in the in the region related to housing the group administers the survey each year gaps at the point in time survey are not unique to Northwest Montana Housing and Urban Development secretary Mara fudge told ABC News in February that there are problems with the process she added that it's meant to provide a sampling of how many homeless people there are in the US and
