The Creston bottling plant proposes to ship 231 million gallons of water out of Montana. Using — or exploiting — a precious state resource such as this sets an important precedent. How and under what circumstances is state water used? This question implicates public trust principles, and is far beyond business as usual at the Department of Environmental Quality! How will we, as a state, feel in 10-20 years if we can chart a course of conduct where massive amounts of water can be sent out of state based on traditional property rights laws?

Jesse Louis Miles, 59

Jesse Louis Miles, 59, passed away on Dec. 20, 2009, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with leukemia. Jesse was born on April 4, 1950, in Modesto, Calif., to Chuck and Lois (Blum) Miles. Jesse joined the Army after high school and served two tours in Vietnam, earning two Purple Hearts. He moved to Bigfork in 1978 where he worked as a building contractor for 30 years with partner John West. Jesse was an active member of the VFW, the American Legion and Pope John Paul II Catholic Church. He enjoyed all that Montana had to offer, from prospecting to hunting and fishing. Jesse is survived by Mary (Prothero), his wife of 28 years; and two children, Angela and Aaron. Memorial services were held on Dec. 26 at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church in Bigfork.

Kalispell police arrested a 20-year-old woman on a charge of disorderly conduct early Wednesday. A verbal disturbance started the incident near the Appleway Conoco on Meridian Road.

Jack Collin, 76, died on Jan. 19, 2007, of natural causes in Oregon. He was born in Glasgow, on Oct. 24, 1930. He graduated from high school and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served our country and continued his education. He retired after 20 years as a chief petty officer.

Kalispell police arrested a 19-year-old man for manufacture of dangerous drugs after they found two marijuana plants at a residence on Santa Fe Street. Officers were originally called on to settle a family dispute.
