Nepal's children have true friends

It’s easy to forget about the earthquake devastation in Nepal as the news headlines about the disaster fade away. But the stark reality is that back-to-back powerful quakes on April 25 and May 12 killed at least 8,622 people in the mountainous, impoverished country.

Rose Merele Harbottle, 94

Rose Merele Harbottle passed away on Oct. 2, 2009, at the age of 94. Born in Cutbank on May 8, 1915, she was the eldest of seven children born to Alma and William Schmeder. Rose worked as a cook for several years in Montana. She was married to Lloyd Harbottle for over 50 years. Rose and Lloyd lived in Concord, Calif., for over 25 years before moving back to Kalispell. Rose was very active in the Trinity Lutheran Church and had many new and old friends in the Flathead Valley. She spent many happy hours with her dear friends in her craft clubs. Rose was loved by all who knew her, and will be greatly missed. Rose is survived by her daughter, Gynel, and Paul Peterson of Grass Valley, Calif.; granddaughters, Denise McConnel, and Cheryl and John Troupe of Napa, Calif.; grandson, Eric and Patty Peterson, of Hayward, Calif.; and her five great-grandchildren, Nicholas McConnel, Lindsay McConnel, Kyle Troupe, Alec Peterson and Marco Peterson. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins in Idaho, Washington, Montana and California. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Alma; her brothers, William, Jack and Herb; her sisters, Mabel, Joy and Verna; and her husband, Lloyd. James M. Anderson, 79

James M. Anderson, 79, died peacefully at North Valley hospital in Whitefish on Feb. 23, 2010, with complications of emphysema. He was born May 5, 1930, in Seattle. He had been a longtime employee of the BN Railroad, retiring as assistant superintendent of transportation in Spokane in 1985. He had been a third generation railroader, beginning his career in Seattle in 1953 and furthering his work in Shelby, Vancouver, British Columbia, Klamath Falls, Ore., Whitefish, Minneapolis, Minot, N.D., and Spokane, before returning to Whitefish at his retirement. Surviving him are his wife of 57 years, Carol; sons, Scott, Mark and Tom and ex-wife Suzanne; grandchildren, Nick, Jessica and Aaron of Spokane; and Kelley and wife Dayna of Atlanta; and grandchildren Ryan and Hayley. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, Diesel and Elizabeth. His legacy is his wood carvings of a life-size cross and crucifix and Madonna in the church of St. Thomas Moore in Spokane. He enjoyed his many friends, neighbors, breakfast group and family. Prior to his illness, he was an avid hunter, short time skier, fisherman and camper. Private services will be held at a later date. James Alexander Murdock, 87,

James Alexander Murdock, 87, of Polson, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010, of natural causes at St. Luke Community Hospital in Ronan. Jim was born to William and Maggie Russell Murdock on July 12, 1922, and was raised in Whitefish, graduating from Whitefish High School in 1940. Jim married Miriam L. Allred on May 21, 1955, and in 1960 they moved to Great Falls, where Jim worked as a mechanic on road construction until 1967, when the company went out of business. In 1968, he later went to work for the Great Northern Railroad, and retired in 1988. Shortly after his retirement, he and Miriam moved to Polson, where they farmed and raised horses. Jim lost Miriam, his wife of 51 years, early in 2006. In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by a brother; three sisters; one son, Russell; a granddaughter, Felecia; and a grandson, Terry. He is survived by his children, Ivan Murdock of Kalispell, Katherine and John Chaney of Portland, and David and Lois Murdock of Kalispell; a sister, Izabelle, and Smokey, Metcalf; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. At Jim s request, there will be no public funeral services. The family is planning a private memorial service at a later date.
