HOLTVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Thirteen people were killed Tuesday when an SUV carrying 25 people and a semitruck collided on a Southern California highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, authorities said.

Man sent to prison for 25 years in sex case

A Bigfork man was given a net 25 year sentence to Montana State Prison for having sex with an underage girl in 2014 on Thursday.

James T. Dedman, 78

James T. Dedman, 78, passed away, Dec. 5, 2009, at Brendan House in Kalispell. He was born May 25, 1931, in Sullivan, Ill., and raised in Illinois. He attended Sidell High School in Sidell, Ill. He then attended Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill., for two years, and graduated two years after, from the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed one year at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and one year in England, building air strips. On Sept. 12, 1959, he married Barbara A. Cain, in Champaign. Jim worked in various jobs as a teenager, mostly on farms. In college, he worked for engineering firms and the state of Illinois, five years with Illinois Bell Telephone Co., and 25 years with the Engineering Department of the U.S. Forest Service, in Missoula and Kalispell. In retirement he worked for Pacific Power and Flathead Electric as an energy consultant. Jim was a member of the church councils of Bethlehem Lutheran and Eidsvold Lutheran churches, on the Somers School board, Flathead Safety Council and the Technical Advisory Committee, working on various safety concerns and the alternate route issue. He was a member of the Kalispell Lions and received the Melvin Jones Award. He was also responsible for building the picnic tables and maintaining the trees and landscaping in Lions Park. Jim enjoyed woodworking and built many pieces of furniture for his family. He also started the Destitute Cattle Co. with his friend Floyd LaBrant, finishing locker beef. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Elizabeth (Wetzel) Dedman; and an infant daughter, Katherine Marie. Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara Dedman; sons, Thomas E., Daniel B., and David N. Dedman; grandchildren, Taylor Dedman of Helena, and Chloe and Colter Dedman of Kalispell; sisters, Connie Puzey and husband Clifford, and Ginger McGee and husband Jerry, all of Illinois; sister-in-law, Jane Becker, and husband, Charles, of Springfield, Ill.; and nieces and nephews in Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Somers. Memorials are suggested to the Kalispell Lions, P.O. Rocky Willis Jelleff, 61

Rocky Willis Jelleff, 61, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010, in Kalispell. Rocky was born Feb. 25, 1949, in Kalispell to Percy and Audrey (Knight) Jelleff. Rocky was raised in the Bigfork area and attended Bigfork Schools and then took a year of college at Flathead Valley Community College. He married Kathryn Henn in Cardston, Alberta, in 1972, and they were married for 25 years. He then married Linda R. Greeson in 2000, in Kalispell. He drove trucks for 42 years. He drove log trucks for Royal Logging and John Jump. He drove a milk truck for three years and drove chip trucks for Hanson Trucking and Kevin Jump. Rocky was very active in the Mormon Church for a number of years, as well as the North Valley Search and Rescue, and was a volunteer fireman for the Bad Rock Fire Hall. He enjoyed fishing, boating, hunting, visiting (Rock had a lot of friends), traveling and gardening. He was preceded in death by his father, Percy Jelleff; twin daughters, Samantha and Olivia Jelleff; sister, Mona Weller; and a son, Mark Andrew Jelleff. He is survived by his mother, Audrey Jelleff; wife, Linda Jelleff; children, Sheila (Jelleff) Uhde, Marsha Jelleff, Aaron Jelleff and wife Holly, Kate Jelleff, Joseph Jelleff and partner Nikkia Cooper, Vanessa Jelleff and partner Raymond Nevins; stepdaughter, Heather Beadles and husband, Chris; brother, Randy Jelleff, and Wendy; brothers-in-law, Jerry Riebe and Ellie, Dan Riebe and Hazel, Jeff Riebe, Jay Riebe and Patricia, and Ron Guyton and Dianne; grandparents, Willis and Evelyn E. Jelleff, and William and Vera Knight; and 11 grandchildren, Tyler, Jacob, Kayla and Elissa Uhde, Haylee, Cyrus, Kyson and Joseph Jelleff, and Ashlynn, Zach and Hannah Baker. Other relatives include Deet and Swede Strand, Gloria Grilley, Dwane and Colette Knight, Marilyn and Pinky Murer, Lois Baker, Helen Riebe, Nieves Shannon Nielsen, Angie Chavez, Raejon Barron, Shane Nielsen, and Jordan and Cami Jelleff. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at the Little Brown Church in Bigfork. Inga Julia Olson, 92

Inga Julia Olson, 92, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Home. Inga was born in Malta on Feb. 28, 1918, to Alfred and Marie Higdem. She grew up on the family homestead where she went to country school in the Bennett Lake community and attended Malta High School. On Nov. 27, 1952, she and Dewey Olson of Scobey were married and bought a house in Hungry Horse. Later they moved to Columbia Falls, where they owned and operated Olson s Sand & Gravel for over 25 years. Inga had worked in a dry-cleaning business, a grocery store, was a nurse s aid, and a bookkeeper for their gravel business. She enjoyed painting, baking, crocheting, and being with friends. She was active in Our Savior s Lutheran Church and Stillwater Free Lutheran Church. Many ladies have taken part in the Bible studies that were held in her home. Inga loved studying God s word and loved the Lord with all her heart. Inga moved into Immanuel Lutheran Home in October 2003 and soon became the resident welcoming committee. She took part in the many activities there and continued having Bible studies in her room with other residents and visiting friends. Inga was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey; daughter, Eileen Berglund; granddaughter, Jennifer; her parents; brother, Elmer Higdem; brothers-in-law, Victor Lyon and William Dove; and former husband, Clifford Bergsagel. She is survived by one daughter, Miriam Erdahl, and husband, Bill, of Gresham, Ore.; three sons, Irvin Bergsagel and wife, Kay, of Minnetonka, Minn., Norman Olson of Columbia Falls, and Ron Olson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sisters, Evelyn Lyon of Seattle, and Alice Dove of Helena; and sister-in-law, Verda Higdem, of Sun City, Ariz. Inga has eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Immanuel Lutheran Home, 435 Crestline Ave., Kalispell, with Pastor Kathleen Larson Phillips conducting the service. Violet Arneson, 96

Violet Arneson, 96, died of natural causes on Sept. 19, 2010, at the Aphrodite Assisted Living Home in Anchorage, Alaska, where she received six years of excellent and loving care. A service was held on Sept. 25 at the Alaskan Heritage Memorial Chapel on Klatt Road, Anchorage. Violet will be buried next to her husband, Lawrence, and her daughter, Lynette, in Glacier Memorial Gardens in Kalispell, where a graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, for family and friends in Montana. Violet was born in Stady, N.D., on July 12, 1914, to Henry and Johanna Marie Halverson. In 1926, Violet s family moved to the Daniels County area of northeastern Montana where members of her extended family still live. She attended a one-room grade school. She loved learning and finally became a teacher. Violet taught in that same one-room school. Violet married her husband in 1934. Early on, they lived a nomadic life style. Lawrence worked heavy construction jobs during World War II " Fort Peck Dam, military air bases and other war effort projects. Mom wouldn t live in a trailer, so Lawrence went on to the jobs and Violet followed behind with the kids, driving an old Ford, pulling a trailer loaded with all their worldly possessions. They later settled and lived in Havre for 25 years. They retired to live at Columbia Falls near Glacier Park. Violet lived there for 28 years until she moved to Anchorage in 2004. Violet, with Lawrence, spent many periods of time living and working in Alaska. Violet loved working outside the home but did not stint on the care of her family. No one ever went to her house without going away stuffed full of great food. She is survived by one daughter, Larean Pierce; and two sons and their wives, Arlen and Charlene Arneson, and Merwin and Nanette Arneson; plus many grand- and great-grandchildren. Violet was also preceded in death by three grandsons and one granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Providence Hospice, 3435 E. Tudor Road, Anchorage, AK 99507-1282. Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls is assisting the family.
