Flathead provides a family-friendly Fourth of July
It is hard to beat a long Fourth of July week in the Flathead! Long, warm, sunny days, no rain and refreshingly cool nights made outdoor recreation a real pleasure. With endless beautiful mountains for hiking, streams for fishing and lakes for water sports, it’s easy to see why many geographers feel Western Montana is an ideal location for summer vacations.
Season of the stink bug
Around this time of year, every year, stink bugs seemingly come out of the woodwork and begin appearing in every room in the house, on the house, and floating aimlessly in the atmosphere.
Affordable housing bill is a win-win, but for whom?
Contrary to Nathan Dugan’s assertion (Montana Land Use Planning Act makes city planning more inclusive, Oct. 25), Senate Bill 382 contains no secrete sauce, magic potion, or any other way to make community planning “more inclusive” or to include “marginalized” citizens.
Why Hillary lost: Let me count the ways!
It is my understanding that Hillary has written a book explaining why she lost the election. It is not my intention to buy this book hoping for a pleasant read. However, I’m thinking it might be appropriate to point out some of the reasons she may have lost several million votes.

Water world: New business touts health benefits of float tank
It’s something straight out of a science fiction movie. People suspend themselves for an hour — or all night — in a massive tank of high density water, floating until their paid time is up.

Commission to look at oversight of houseboats on Flathead Lake
A pair of houseboats stationed along Flathead Lake’s north shore may rankle some lakefront property owners, but for now the floating homes appear to operate in a legal “no-man’s land,” where agencies lack any regulatory authority to manage the vessels’ presence.
With ballooning, it's all about hot air
I saw two hot-air balloons floating above the West Valley on my way to work this week, and was reminded how mesmerizing those voluminous orbs can be. Once you spot one, it’s hard to take your eyes off it.

One a recent Saturday rafters by the dozens floated the North Fork of the Flathead River and many other people with similar plans drove up the dusty North Fork Road toward Polebridge or beyond.

Crappie Crazy continued
In my last column, I talked about one of North America's favorite fish, the black crappie.
Questions about water compact being ignored
Sen. Bruce Tutvedt’s most recent letter to the editor brings nothing new to the table and, as usual, ignores the vast majority of the real questions relevant to the issue of the Salish and Kootenai water compact.
LETTER: Smith River Mine would hurt Montana
The mining operation proposed by Tintina mining corporation would not only be detrimental to the central Montana environment, but irreversible as well.
LETTER: Don't block U.S. tradition from July 4 parade
In March, 2012, on behalf of the Flathead Valley Muzzleloaders club, I approached Mr. Joe Unterreiner, CEO for the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, about their Fourth of July parade, and also Mr. Charles Harball, Kalispell city attorney. Both men gave our club approval to escort a parade float up Main Street, firing “reduced” load “blanks” in our single-shot black-powder muzzleloading rifles.

Everybody loves a parade
It was Jeff Goldblum as Jurassic Park’s Dr. Ian Malcolm who said, regardless of how much control you think you have, “Life finds a way.” Parades are sort of like that.
