Whitefish fire causes minor damage

About 20 firefighters from Whitefish, Kalispell and Evergreen responded to a structure fire Wednesday at 128 Central Ave. in Whitefish. The fire was caused by the careless use of smoking materials, according to Whitefish Fire Chief Tom Kennelly. The burning material fell off the porch of a second-floor apartment and landed between the buildings, where it started the fire. There was some difficulty extinguishing the fire because the space between the buildings is only about seven inches. Kennelly estimated the damage at between $2,000 and $3,000.
