A bartender who served a drunken driver who was responsible for a head-on crash near Somers that killed a Montana Highway Patrol trooper has pleaded not guilty to several misdemeanors.

Archie Earl Smith, 66

Archie lost his battle with cancer on Feb. 2, 2010. Archie was born in Lincolnton, N.C., on Oct. 3, 1943, and grew up in Tucson, Ariz., where he graduated from Amphitheatre High School, and the University of Arizona with a teaching degree in physical education. Working at Glacier National Park during the summers of his college years, he loved the life in Montana and made his home in Whitefish. Archie loved to travel, hunting, country music, sports, family and friends. His passion for his work in construction can be seen throughout the valley in the many homes and businesses that he poured his heart and soul into making sure the job was done to perfection. He is survived by his mother, Edna Smith, of Tucson; his wife, Kay, of Whitefish; brothers, Marlin and Garland Smith, of Tucson; daughter, Shelly Smith, of Phoenix; son, Scott Smith, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Columbia Falls; daughter, SN Stephanie Coyne, USN, based in Great Lakes, Ill., and her husband, Greg, of Phoenix; also, his two granddaughters, Bailey and Hannah, of Columbia Falls. Services will be at noon Sunday, Feb. 7, at Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish. There will be a celebration of Archie s life following the service at their home, at 2225 Hwy. 93 west of Whitefish.

Kalispell police stopped a 19-year-old woman for a traffic violation. She must not have liked what the officer had to say because she flipped him the bird and took off in the middle of it. Police followed her to work and arrested her for disorderly conduct.

Reported meth lab isn't meth lab at all

Flathead County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a possible meth lab near Grahams Bar on the Flathead River. Turns out it was just a combination of an innocent camper and an overly concerned citizen.

Flathead County Sheriff's Office found some unexpected things on roadways. On South Hilltop Drive, it was a man in a blue truck, stopped in the middle of the road. He was charged with DUI, driving with a revoked license, and having no insurance or registration.

Kalispell police department was notified Friday afternoon of the theft of a wallet from an unlocked vehicle in the parking lot of a local motel. The victim's fearless daughter dove into a nearby trash bin in search of the billfold, but to no avail. The wallet was finally found lying in the grass - minus its cash stash.

Kalispell police responded to a report of a robbery Saturday at 9:24 a.m. at the Movie Gallery on U.S. 93 South. A woman said a man in blue jeans, a dark blue top and teal-color ski cap ran up behind her and took a bank deposit bag.

Flathead County Sheriff

People who found unlikely places for repose Friday didn't welcome a lot of questions from Flathead County Sheriff's Office deputies. A woman on U.S. 93, north of Twin Bridges Road was reportedly uncooperative with officers and said there was nothing wrong; she was just resting. A man lying in a ditch on Seventh Avenue West North, north of Idaho Street, said he had found a place to enjoy the sunshine.

Kalispell police are investigating a reported assault and kidnapping. A man allegedly forced a woman into a car, possibly after he ran her over. She got away and went to the police station, where she filled out a report. While she was there, the man came back and took her car, reports said. The car was later involved in a gas drive-off.

A mid-summer night's scream was reported to Kalispell police overnight.

Someone from Fifth Avenue West called to say a man there was "freaking out." A dispatcher heard a scream and the phone went dead. The matter is under investigation.

The Flathead County Sheriff's Office

kept busy Monday evening with vehicle accidents across the county. Among the crashes to which they dispatched emergency personnel were a rollover on Montana 40 and Conn Road, a vehicle on its side north of Whitefish, a rollover south of Bigfork, two crashes on Montana 35, an accident south of Somers that left a vehicle hung up in a fence, a rollover near Coffee Traders south of Whitefish, and a crash on U.S. 93 south of Lakeside that launched one vehicle off the highway and left another in the traffic lane.
