HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. John Melcher, a Montana Democrat who narrowly lost a bid for a third term in 1988 just days after a wilderness bill he championed was vetoed, has died. He was 93.

Flathead County Sheriff's deputies responded to a residence on Montana 40 near Columbia Falls after a woman reported that her boyfriend was breaking stuff in the house and smashed the windows on a Jeep. He reportedly was upset because they were breaking up. The man and woman were separated.
