Tips from teachers on remote learning
COVID-19 has upended lives across Montana, making many of us rethink the future of our world. One uncharted territory is education. Montana has closed schools to families physically while maintaining education and nutrition services. Many are tackling distance learning. Some Montana students do not have internet access, and at the same time, many schools are completely closed and can’t distribute or collect paper packets. Montana is as diverse as its teachers’ approaches to this issue, but this diversity is sharply contrasted with our concerted efforts to lean on each other and collaborate.

Karen Joann Sanderson, 48
On Aug. 30, 1971, the musician, Sandy Sanderson, and hairdresser, Patti Knapton Sanderson, were thrilled to give birth to their first child, Karen Joann Sanderson in Whitefish. Karen’s childhood was idyllic and complete when brother Logan came along. Being a fifth generation Montanan from the Flathead Valley, Karen was surrounded by the love of a large extended family. Karen graduated from Flathead High School in 1989 and obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Communications degree from University of Montana in 1993. Karen’s family and many lifelong friends made while in high school, college, the Kappa Alpha Theta house and beyond are left to mourn the sudden loss of dear Karen. She passed on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019, after a short bout of lung cancer.

John Patrick Hiilani Figueira Araujo, age 53, passed away on Oct. 19, 2019 in Kalispell. John was born on Dec. 12, 1965 to John Figueira and Anna K. (Nahinu) Araujo in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pat was raised in Waimanalo, Hawaii, and graduated from Kailua High School. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy and later became an electrician for many years, belonging to the IBEW union. He loved beach volleyball, canoe paddling and lifting weights. Pat was preceded in death by his father and sisters, Paula and Audrey. He is survived by his children Alexcia and Kalene, mother Anna Nahinu, sisters and brothers Kelly, Corey, Anuhea and Wendell and one grandchild, Jahsiah. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 9, 2019 at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home with a reception following the service at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home.
