Twisted physics used to prop up political agenda

Mr. Berry’s opinion article (Inter Lake, Jan. 6) is one of several he has published in which he attempts to convince the reader that, contrary to the conclusions of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the vast majority of climate scientists, human activity is not the cause of increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Carl Sagan popularized the aphorism that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Mr. Berry’s claims that the IPCC is a “marketing organization, not a scientific organization,” that the “IPCC and climate alarmists have abandoned the time-tested scientific method,” and that “they [IPCC] exclude evidence that proves their theory is wrong” are indeed extraordinary. So where is his evidence for these claims? The answer is he provides none. In contrast, all IPCC assessment reports are based on results published in recognized, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Further, all IPCC reports have been subjected to extensive peer review by subject matter experts.

Time for 'tip ups'

For today’s column, I will assume that many readers may have a very basic knowledge, or need a refresher on the many different types of “tip ups” there are. For starters, a basic tip up consists of a frame of some sort, that suspends the spool of line, the drop line and the lure or bait in the water, with a flag or other indicator above the ice that indicates when a fish has taken the bait. It is really that simple. There are tip ups that span the hole, leaving the hole open and exposed, to tip ups that completely cover and seal the hole to keep it from freezing, with the line in the middle of the hole.

NorthWestern Energy’s most recent management plan lacks meaningful information regarding energy storage or solar production. They propose to be the major owner of the Colstrip power plants, which have limited years of usefulness, repeated non-compliance, looming expensive upgrades, increasing costs of coal, and eventual cleanup costs that will be staggering. Ratepayers will shoulder the costs in cleaning this future superfund site as NWE is lawfully guaranteed a return on their investment, no matter how careless. The Public Service Commission is charged with representing the public, protecting us from corporate mismanagement, its consequences, and the subsequent massive increases in costs to the consumers. The PSC is clearly not doing an adequate job.

Water Compact legislation fails to protect Montana

Less than one month ago, Senator Daines introduced Senate Bill 3019, The Montana Water Rights Protection Act, to the U.S. Senate. In his attempt to fix the CSKT Water Compact, which is the most divisive legislation in modern Montana history, Sen. Daines made the issue worse. The legislative intent of his bill is to obtain congressional approval of the CSKT Water Compact and to provide federal appropriations to implement this compact. Unfortunately, it goes way beyond that. His Montana Water Rights Protection Act creates much more controversy in addition to the original taking of water rights from 350,000 Western Montanans. Like the CSKT Water Compact, there is so much wrong with this legislation.

Letters to the editor Jan. 2

Well if nothing else Sens. Daines, Braun and Scott provided a good laugh with their letter (Let’s pass “no budget, no pay,” Dec. 15). I do agree something needs to be done about the way the federal budget is handled. However, for these three to write this letter is hilarious. All three are multi-millionaires, how much do you think missing a congressional paycheck is going to hurt them? I mean really, their congressional salaries are no more that pocket change for them.

Which party is dying?

A recent missive by someone who claimed to be a former Republican stated that the Republican Party has abandoned its principles because it has become the party of Donald Trump. The writer claimed to identify the Republican principles of her youth as the true principles of the Republican Party and that President Trump has abandoned and/or perverted them. With all due respect, her knowledge and understanding of historic Republican principles is flawed. This writer would argue that the political party that has abandoned its core principles is the current Democrat Party.
