National Burger Day
May 28, 2014 2:34 p.m.

National Burger Day

For National Burger Day Tien Windaur whips up one of his "Flathead Monsters" on Wednesday, May 28, at Tien's Place in Columbia Falls. The burger is not officially on the menu but Tien has been making it as a sort of private challenge for customers for 11 years. If someone can eat the whole thing, it's free. The "Flathead Monster" contains three patties, nine slices of cheese, sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, onion, tomato, and two grilled cheese sandwiches for the bun all held together with two chop sticks and served over french fries. According to Tien, in 11 years only four customers have been able to eat the whole thing. For something a little more manageable Windaur offers the "Chad" a burger named after the customer who initially request that Tien create the perfect burger. The "Chad" has two patties, cheese, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and onion with bun for $8.95. (Brenda Ahearn/Daily Inter Lake)

Flathead River rises to flood stage

The clear blue water of the South Fork of the Flathead River meets  the runoff-muddied water of the main river near Hungry Horse in this aerial view Friday morning. The South Fork flows out of Hungry Horse Dam so it isn’t discolored by runoff. Fueled by melting snow, the mainstem Flathead River on Friday reached flood stage of 13 feet as measured at Columbia Falls. The river level is forecast to rise to nearly 14 feet this weekend. Water levels in the Middle Fork and North Fork of the Flathead River are expected to peak about a foot below flood stage today. (Patrick Cote/Daily Inter Lake; aerial support provided by LightHawk)

Abandoned building burns

The incineration of an abandoned North Hill Road farm house west of Kalispell Tuesday morning is being investigated because of the possibility that it may have been deliberately burned down, according to Smith Valley Fire Chief DC Haas. Haas said there were conflicting stories about the owner burning debris and embers igniting the house — and whether the owner had a permit to burn the structure. According to Haas, the owner apparently called the fire department and left a message about his planned general burning, but that message was not received before the fire. The fire attracted a response from not only Smith Valley but also West Valley, Kalispell and South Kalispell fire departments as well as West Flathead EMS. Haas said he was most concerned about the dangers posed to multiple emergency responders rushing to get to the fire.

Strolling Down Fourth Avenue East
May 8, 2014 12:51 p.m.

Strolling Down Fourth Avenue East

The George Drew Residence at 345 Fourth Avenue East is a study in black and white. Historical Marker: Kalispell was only two years old when German immigrant Louise Sels and her son Ed had this cross-gabled Queen Anne style residence buit in 1892, a year that saw over a hundred homes built in the new town. Louise Sels soon sold the house to her son-in-law Arthur Burnes, but according to the 1900 census, she continued to live in the home with her extended family. The household included her three grown children, granddaughter, son-in-law, and his mother. Josephine Richards and Ella Bell owned the house between 1902 and 1905, renting out "nice large front rooms" to gentlemen. The distinctive horseshoe-shaped porch was added between 1903 and 1907. The home's longest occupant, Maude Drew, lived here between 1905 until her death in 1959 at age 89. A year after she and her husband George bought the house in 1905 they installed a brick sidewalk. The local newspaper lauded this improvement over the standard wood sidewalks and predicted, "other property owners will note the manner in which the walk wears with much interest." Olszewski takes both sides of issue

Dr. Al Olszewski’s April 27 letter to the editor states he strongly opposes Obamacare and Medicaid expansion. Yet he testified for House Bill 590. Regardless what was tacked onto it, HB 590 supported Medicaid expansion.  A liberal Democrat sponsored it, and our liberal Democrat governor promoted it. The majority of the Montana Republican legislators opposed it. That’s why it didn’t pass.

Why do signs matter so much?

I attended a Flathead County commissioners’ hearing discussing political signage and then listened to the contentious follow-up public testimony. There have been many newspaper comments about political signs blighting the landscape view shed in Flathead County, but insisting it represents “free speech.” It has inspired me to join in and write about it.

Don't let the 'left' sway your vote in GOP race

A recent letter to the editor by the “left” leaning political activist Bill Baum, like most liberal proclamations, may not be what it seems. Mr. Baum suggested that his fellow Democrats join him in crossing over during the primary election and supporting the Republican incumbent running for re-election on the county commission, Cal Scott. Can it be that he has another motive for supporting commissioner Scott than his newly found conversion to “Republican” party principles?
