The next challenge for the COVID-19 response

As a former Navy doctor, veteran and a current family doctor of over 25 years, I have a great understanding of how viruses can ravage through populations. We as Montanans have been fairly fortunate during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus far, the state has had 433 confirmed cases and only 57 hospital admissions. Sadly, however, 10 Montanans have lost their lives to this virus. Personally I feel we have dodged a bullet because I know what could have happened had we not taken the proactive steps of social distancing, closing schools, shutting down non-essential operations, and embracing early sheltering in place policies. I would like to commend the leadership in our state and all Montanan’s for embracing the early shutdown. With that being said, we are not out of the woods yet.

Hydroxychloroquine is already a life-saving medicine

This morning, I woke up short of breath, my body fatigued with a hot ache. In the time of coronavirus, these symptoms raise alarm, but as a Montanan living with chronic illness, waking up feeling sick is a reality I face most days. I have lupus, an autoimmune disease where my immune system mistakenly attacks my own connective tissue, triggering inflammation from the smallest vessels in my digits to swelling in my airway to oppressive fatigue. For people with lupus, there is no cure; we will live with this disease for the rest of our lives.

Letters to the editor April 23

I remember sitting in Dick Chapman’s entertaining Mythology course at Flathead High in 1982. The teacher illustrated the ancient concept of the dilemma. Odysseus returning home from the Trojan War consulted an Oracle before sailing through the Bosporus. The Oracle foretold that the ship would encounter the giant whirlpool Charybdis on one side, or the nine-headed monster Scylla on the other. Scylla would claim nine lives if Odysseus passed that way. Charybdis would either claim none or all of the ship’s sailors. Odysseus chose the path of Scylla for he knew he could not risk the entire ship and crew. He placed himself at the head of the ship and fought Scylla furiously but in the end, as foretold, nine of his fellow sailors were tragically lost.

Tips from teachers on remote learning

COVID-19 has upended lives across Montana, making many of us rethink the future of our world. One uncharted territory is education. Montana has closed schools to families physically while maintaining education and nutrition services. Many are tackling distance learning. Some Montana students do not have internet access, and at the same time, many schools are completely closed and can’t distribute or collect paper packets. Montana is as diverse as its teachers’ approaches to this issue, but this diversity is sharply contrasted with our concerted efforts to lean on each other and collaborate.

Letters to the editor April 5

In the best-case scenario, the COVID-19 pandemic will result in 100,000-200,000 U.S. deaths, according to the White House coronavirus task force. At this level, it will exceed U.S. servicemen deaths in World War II. With no mitigation efforts, public health experts project more than 1 million U.S. residents will die. No matter how Mr. Fuller wishes to spin it (Daily Inter Lake, March 29), COVID-19 is not the annual flu. It is a deadly pandemic that will kill and maim huge numbers — in addition to annual losses from flu and motor vehicle accidents.
