passed away Sept. 28, 2008, in Kalispell. She was born in St. Paul, Minn., on Nov. 27, 1919, to Grace (Tewkesbury) and Shirley Montrose Crosse, the eldest child and only daughter of seven children. She grew up in Detroit, where she met her husband James D. Putman while he was in training with the United States Navy during World War II.

A man allegedly threw a woman on the ground and tried to hit her after a drug deal on East Reserve Drive in Evergreen went bad. He reportedly didn't want to pay her for a bag of marijuana. Flathead County Sheriff's deputies responded and ended up citing the man for drug possession.

Berylene received her early education at Elrod Elementary School and completed eighth grade at Central School in Kalispell.
