But on Jan. 1, as many as a couple hundred people will brave the frigid winter waters for the 23rd annual Polar Bear Plunge in Woods Bay. The time honored tradition was started by Neil and Patty Brown, who had the brilliant idea for an icy jump that has been carried on by Brian Anderson and his wife, Lisa Cloutier. My life as a volunteer firefighter

One lighting strike and there it was — my livelihood was on fire. I’ve been a volunteer firefighter for 16 years and a rancher for, well, my entire life. On this day, though, the day the family ranch caught on fire, I was not one or the other, but both. A rancher concerned for my land, I felt a sense of panic. A volunteer firefighter, I did what I always do — answered the call. After a mentally and physically exhausting day, the fire began to dwindle and eventually came to a stop. It’s a day I will never forget. Not just because it was my land that caught fire this time, but because it was my team that fought to put it out. I will be forever grateful for my fellow firefighters and their effort to save my grass.

Robert W. Stack, 94

Robert Worden “Bob” Stack, 94, of Kalispell passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Dec. 2, 2017 after a brief illness. He was born to James Watson Stack and Ethel Lucile Worden Stack on May 26, 1923 in Cut Bank, Mont, and graduated from Cut Bank High School in 1941. Bob was attending the University of Washington when duty to country called. As did many of the “Greatest Generation,” he delayed his future plans and enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 26, 1943 in Seattle. After basic training Bob was posted to Camp Gruber (Ft. Sill) Okla. for training as an artillery battery surveyor. From there he was assigned to Headquarters Battery, Division Artillery, 42nd Rainbow Division which was deploying to the European Theater of Operations. Bob joined the theater through southern France on Jan. 18, 1945, campaigning through the Alsace region into the Rhineland and Austria as the war ended. He then spent the rest of his active duty with occupation forces stationed at Salzburg, Austria. It was during this time that Bob learned to ski at St. Moritz, and skiing remained a passion throughout his life.

$75,000 lottery ticket reported stolen

According to the Kalispell Police Department, a representative from the state lottery called police because they were worried there would an altercation between a woman who won $75,000 and a man who allegedly stole the ticket. According to dispatch, the representative said that if a police report was filed, they had video of the lottery ticket purchase and a video of the man who tried to cash the ticket in Helena.

Jeep runs over stop sign, flees scene

According to the Columbia Falls Police Department, a Jeep ran over a stop sign and fled the scene. Border Patrol reportedly saw the incident and tried to catch the driver. The vehicle reportedly reached speeds upward of 100 mph before Border Patrol lost sight of it on the North Fork Road. Border Patrol allegedly found the vehicle again, but then lost sight of the Jeep once again after the vehicle traveled into a ditch to evade officers. Officers reportedly ran the information on the vehicle and found it allegedly belonged to an Evergreen man.
