Memorial Day, May 25, 2020, what a great day to be alive and a blessing to be an American. We are reminded that millions fought, some paying the ultimate sacrifice, so that we might live and work in a free country. Brave individuals put country and their fellow Americans first. They put their personal freedoms and safety on hold for us. We are grateful for all who served.

Fix Canadian mining now
An international group of science and policy experts from the United States and Canada recently published a letter in the prestigious journal Science voicing concern for the poisoning of U.S. rivers stemming from Canadian headwaters. The source of the contamination? Hard-rock and coal mining. We’ve known about the toxins flowing from British Columbia into downstream states for decades. However, the poisoning of U.S. waters from Canadian mining is about to get dramatically worse and will go on for centuries if it is not stopped, and stopped before it’s too late.

Growth in the Flathead is poorly planned and parts of the valley are starting to look like an L.A. suburb; just look at alternate 93 for an example. The existing growth plans are either insufficient to manage the growth or are being ignored. This may be the only time I say that we should look to other states and the growth mistakes they made so we can avoid making them here. This runaway and poorly planned growth has resulted in homes being priced beyond the means of most Flathead residents. Most of the houses are now priced for out-of-state buyers. If we don’t fix growth policies we will no longer be called The Last Best Place within a decade.

My number one priority as county commissioner is the interests and priorities of the people of the Flathead, and for that reason, I’m throwing my hat in the ring for Austin Knudsen for Montana attorney general. Austin’s conservative record in the Legislature speaks for itself, but I can also speak to it personally. Austin and I served as legislators together for eight years. Austin and I came from opposite ends of our state, but we had a lot of the same priorities — rein in Governor Bullock’s spending and big-government programs, protect Second Amendment rights, and defend private property, to name a few.

Olszewski a native Montanan, veteran and honest person
I’m biased, but even if Dr. Al Olszewski wasn’t my big brother, what other candidate would buy a bus, put his face on it, and drive it around our large state of Montana? Before Covid19, he went out personally to earn the trust of Montana’s citizens. Can you even imagine what he’ll do for Montana if he’s elected? Letters to the editor May 17
As a retired fire chief and past 16-year volunteer firefighter, I implore you to take action if you are a resident of the Whitefish Fire Service Area and recently received a letter about their upcoming contract negotiations with the city of Whitefish. I can see this critical issue from both sides. If we take no action we could be facing response times of 30 minutes for both fire and ambulance as opposed to the current average response time of 90 seconds to have crews on the road en route the emergency. If you take no action, the consequences could be dire and irreversible. Is it money or pride? The boards action could be putting our lives at risk.
Civil legal aid more important than ever
As the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis grow daily, health and economic hardships can quickly develop into legal problems, for which most Montana families are completely unprepared. Legal problems can be the breaking point when added to the stress and heartbreak employees, contract workers, small business owners, and families experience as they look toward an uncertain future. As low-wage workers and families struggle to pay rent, access public benefits, and understand the changing landscape of their legal rights, civil legal aid for Montanans who can’t afford a private lawyer is essential to Montana’s pandemic response.
Our food supply chain is broken
When I looked up “food security” this definition made the most sense to me. “Food security incorporates a measure of resilience to future disruption or unavailability of critical food supply due to various risk factors including droughts, shipping disruptions, fuel shortages, economic instability, and wars.” Covid-19 has revealed that we do not have food security in the USA.

Drop in state bed-tax revenue impacts visitor bureaus, parks
The novel coronavirus outbreak has brought into focus just how intertwined Montana’s economy is. When one segment struggles, it’s likely the effects of that will be felt far and wide. So when Gov. I find it hard to believe that we can’t find someone, willing to serve on the board that is capable of working with others who may have a different opinion on an issue.
