Firefighters unable to save garage

The Blankenship Fire Department and later the Columbia Falls Fire Department responded to a garage on fire on North Fork Road, two miles above the Ford Cabin near Polebridge, about 9:15 Monday night. The garage, which was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on scene, was a total loss. A large propane tank was also engulfed. It didn't blow, but firefighters were forced to allow it to vent all night and into Tuesday.

Born in 1956 to Barbara and Jerry Turner Sr. at the "old" Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto Calif., Jay spent his early years playing and riding bikes in the fields where Hewlett Packard now stands. As a teen, he lived in the Chicago area, and as a young adult moved to Montana to live near his sister Laura and her family.

Didn't get far by foot or car

While pursuing a driver whose vehicle had hit another vehicle in an Evergreen parking lot, Flathead County sheriff's deputies discovered the car he was driving had been reported stolen in Kalispell earlier that day. The 17-year-old driver led deputies on a chase through Evergreen, and when he reached a dead end on Capistrano Drive, he fled on foot. Deputies caught him quickly and arrested the youth on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and eluding arrest.

A ruptured gas line on U.S. 93 north of Kalispell forced authorities to reroute traffic for more than two hours Tuesday. The highway was closed between West Reserve Drive and Tronstad Road from 10 a.m. to about noon. Vehicles were forced to cut across to Whitefish Stage Road, causing backups and delays.

Flathead County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 26-year-old man for an assault on Shady Lane after he allegedly gave a woman a fat lip. The man, who also was reported to have stabbed himself, was gone when deputies arrived. They caught up with him later.
