Make over at the Conrad Mansion
Jeff Miller of the Sherwin-Williams Paint Store on W. Idaho paints the office at the Conrad Mansion on Thursday, May 12. There are two Kalispell Sherwin-Williams locations, W. Idaho and near Super 1 Foods, and they partnered to donate paint, supplies and labor to take care of a make over of both the office and the gift shop at the Conrad Mansion. Their combined community service project is part of the National Paint Week in which Sherwin-Williams stores across the country choose service projects to benefit their local communities. According to Miller work began on Thursday and they expect to be mostly wrapped up on Friday. For this particular project the stores went with a flat paint, for historic accuracy, and were also highly careful in dealing with all of the wood trim. The make over comes at a perfect time for the Mansion said Gennifer Sauter, executive director. The Mansion is currently preparing to open for their tour season which begins on Sunday, May 15 and will continue until October 15. For the first month the Mansion will be open Wednesday through Sunday. In the height of the season, beginning mid-June the Mansion will be open to tours Tuesday through Sunday. Cyclists get shuttle boost from nonprofit
Caeli Quinn (left) and Denny Gignoux and their two children, Luca and Marin, were among the first bicyclists to try the new NPS Hiker-Biker Shuttle from Lake McDonald Lodge to Avalanche on Saturday, May 7. The shuttle bus and bike trailer service is part of a demonstration project that the park launched for the NPS Centennial. The service runs daily between Lake McDonald Lodge and Avalanche from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. through June 26 or when the Going-to-the-Sun Road opens to vehicles, whichever comes first. COLUMN: Trapping opponents pursuing initiative again
For the third time in the last several years, animal-rights advocates, funded by mostly out-of-state money, are attempting to get public trapping banned on over 30 million acres of Montana public land. This effort is now underway, trying to get thousands of Montana citizens in numerous legislative districts to sign petitions to allow the anti-public-land trapping initiative to get on the November ballot. Similar efforts in 2012 and 2014 failed.

Having read Rep. Zinke’s recent letter, and having heard his story/photo-op stop at the now shuttered CFAC plant, I must respond. Being that I go back to the late Anaconda Aluminum era into the Atlantic Richfield era, as one of the Purchasing Department employees who ended up as the purchasing manager handling all major raw materials, with a budget of $56 million per year, a response is required. I have the utmost respect for Rep. Zinke, but his take on “things” as this plant is being torn down is off center.
