Kalispell Fire Department HazMat Team called down to Lakeside

Kalispell firefighters Soren Koetter and Josiah Mooney approach and illicit chemical dump in protective gear at the Green Box site in Lakeside on Wednesday, October 21. The chemical was found to be a diluted pesticide which was able to be mitigated. The Kalispell Fire Department HazMat team is one of six regional teams in the state. According to Assistant Fire Chief Jon Campbell this level of gear may look appear to be an "abundance of caution" but it is necessary for the safety of the responders. "We don't know what this chemical is. All we know is someone didn't want to dump it down their drains or on their property," said Campbell. The site was closed most of Wednesday as the chemicals were dealt with. According to a representative from Flathead County Solid Waste the site was still closed Wednesday evening, but very close to being complete. The hoped to have the site re-opened to the public late Wednesday. (Brenda Ahearn/Daily Inter Lake)

OPINION: Letter writer who attacked fellow Republicans was missing the boat

The Democrats must be laughing hysterically! And they should be after reading Ed Berry’s epistle in Sunday’s paper. They are laughing because it is obvious Ed has fallen for the far left rhetoric fanning dissension inside of the Republican Party, which allows liberals to hide their failed policies within our state and our nation as well.

OPINION: Do we really need more government?

Whitefish Government Study Commission has recently recommended changes to the Whitefish City Charter which would add a new government layer in the position of ombudsman. As active citizens in the community, we vehemently oppose the addition of more government, which will in turn raise taxes and hamstring the city council and city leaders. Many safeguards already are in place to ensure citizen input and protect against violation of public policy.

In his op-ed on Oct. 4 titled “Very conservative evangelicals bad for GOP?” Ed Berry frequently referred to me. His disjointed ramblings made it difficult for readers to see his point. He seems to think that I am pushing an ideology on others. I am not. It is Ed that wrote the op-ed to advance his position. I simply vote my values; values that the majority of voters in HD 4 agree. As former superintendents of Glacier National Park, we have long recognized that decisions made within Glacier’s boundaries affect our neighbors throughout the Crown of the Continent, and vice versa. Jamie Ring, 76

Jamie Ring died on Sept. 29, 2015, finally succumbing to “O.D.T.A.A (One Damn Thing After Another)” in Whitefish. Beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend; Jamie was ever the optimist, big hearted, and determined to leave this world better than she found it. She was also fond of a good IPA, a good cheeseburger, and a good conspiracy theory. She was known for getting fits of giggles, especially with her cousin. And please know that if you ever sent Jamie a card, she still had it in a box in her house. The U.S. Postal Service lost a good patron in Jamie.
