Ada Mary (Smith) Felsman, 103

A special strong remarkable spirit freed the bonds of dementia and a failing body on July 27, 2010, leaving her beloved Flathead Valley to be at peace with her heavenly father and many loved ones who preceded her to the glory of Heaven. Ada was born on June 19, 1907, to Oliver Douglas and Christina (Grant) Smith who emigrated from Nova Scotia to Philipsburg. To ensure a good education for their children they relocated to the Flathead Valley. Ada was the sixth of nine children and the first to be born in the Flathead. She was born in Bigfork on June 19, 1907. Ada attended Creston grade school and Flathead County High School, earning her diploma in 1925. She continued her education, going to normal school that summer and commencing her teaching career at Creston School in the fall, at the age of 18. Ada s second teaching job took her to the west of Kalispell to Boorman School. While attending a box social she met her husband-to-be of 73 years, Herman Felsman. She and Herman married on Sept. 13, 1928, at the county fair at the fairgrounds being the grandstand show for the evening. Ada discontinued teaching, opting to devote her life to being a full-time wife and mother. She actively pursued her varied interest in homemaking, gardening, needlework, fishing and huckleberry picking. A meaningful part of her life was being involved with her church. After many years Ada returned to teaching, while pursing her Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She was granted her degree in 1966. Ada taught again at Boorman school and retired from teaching at Montford-Egan school. Ada was preceded in death by her parents, and all of her siblings, James Grant Smith, Oliver Smith, Margaret (Smith) Orr, Christine Smith Dean, Alice (Smith) Mac Rae, Vivian (Smith) Kenshella Managhan, Robert Smith and Amber (Smith) Collier; her husband, Herman Felsman; her first born child, Wilbur Dale Billie Felsman, who died tragically at the age of 5 in 1935; and two great-grandchildren, Anna Moe and Danny Fine. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Felsman) Fine of Missoula, and Sharon (Felsman) Bench of Spokane; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home; burial will follow at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. A reception will follow at the First Presbyterian Church in Kalispell. You are invited to go to www.buffalohillfh.com to sign Ada s book or leave a message for the family.

Hazel M. (Horn) Gore, 89

On Sunday, July 25, 2010, our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and best friend peacefully left this earth to dance in Heaven with her husband, Lester. Hazel was born on June 30, 1921, in Moore. She was the fifth of eight children born to Albert Vernon and Laura Alice (Peters) Horn. She attended grade school and grew up on Cottonwood Creek near Lewistown. On Nov. 2, 1938, she married the love of her life, Lester Allen Gore, in Lewistown. In 1943 they moved to the Flathead Valley where they built their log home in Evergreen. Hazel was an avid square dancer most of her life and, along with her husband, Lester, and many friends, they built Gore Hall next to their house, so they could have a place close to home to dance. They were instrumental in organizing round dance and square dance clubs in the Flathead Valley. Many considered Hazel the Matriarch of Square Dancing. Hazel worked for the Evergreen School District for 19 years, retiring in 1983. She loved fishing, camping, puttering in her flower beds and walking barefoot in the grass on warm, sunny days. She took great pride in her home, her yard, her family and her friends. She had a terrific sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Hazel was a very sincere and caring person, and a loving mother and wife. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. Hazel s husband of 62 years, Lester, preceded her in death on April 23, 2000. She was also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, Everett, Gilbert, Ellis, Viola, LaVonne, Lela and Lula. Hazel is survived by her four children, Marilyn Wiard and her husband, Chuck, of Whidbey Island, Wash., Beverly Grimm of Kalispell, Diana Griffin and her husband, Bill, of Sun City, Ariz., and Richard Gore and his wife, Valerie, of Glendale, Ariz. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Mike Emerson of Kalispell, Pamela Fisher and her husband, Jerry, of Stanwood, Wash., Bradley Gore of Arizona, and Darren Gore and his wife, Maureen, also of Arizona; four great-grandchildren, Gavin, Shaylee, Ashley and Brittany; numerous nieces and nephews, and many special friends. We would like to say a special Thank you to all of the Angels at Brendan House and Hospice who took such loving and compassionate care of Hazel. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 at Glacier Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that any memorial contributions that you wish to make in Hazel s name, be made to Home Options Hospice, 175 Commons Loop, Suite 100, Kalispell, MT 59901; or to the charity of your choice.

Joseph Bryant Reber, 91
July 28, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Joseph Bryant Reber, 91

Joseph Bryant Reber passed away peacefully on July 23, 2010, in his home at the Springs of Missoula. He was born in Butte on Feb. 17, 1919, to Edward A. Reber, a copper miner, and Mary Molly (Rooney), a correspondent for the Butte Daily Post. He was the third of nine children, and joins his brothers, Charles, Edward, Paul and Leonard, along with his sisters, Gertrude, Mary Belle, Frances and Flora, who preceded him in death. He attended St. John s Elementary School through the eighth grade and attended Butte High School for one year. At age 15, he left school to take his father s job on the WPA (Works Progress Administration), repairing Silver Bow Creek after his father s illness. When the WPA ended he went to work for Hansen Packing Company, and after two years went to work for Nevin-Frank Bottling, driving a pop truck for his uncle, Phil Harrington. It was during this time, at 19, Joe met and married his first love, Marie (Terry) Tauriainen, and from this union five children were born, Joseph, Roberta, Dianna, Bryant and Susie. Joe and Terry divorced in 1972. In 1973, Joe married Rosalyn M. Rowe who preceded him in death earlier this spring, on May 6. At the beginning of World War II, he attended trade school in Butte where he learned to be a welder and in 1942 he moved his family to San Francisco where he worked in the shipyards. He was anxious to serve in the Armed Forces and, along with his brother Paul, they joined the United States Maritime Service (The Merchant Marines). He served in the Pacific as a staff officer on the SS Sea Scamp, a troop carrier with 3,000 on board. He later served in the same capacity on the SS David E. Hughes, ending his service on Dec. 3, 1945. He received an honorable discharge from the United States Coast Guard. He was a proud member of the Butte Plumber s Local 41 beginning in 1945. In 1946 he moved from Butte to Helena and started what became the Reber Company at the age of 26. He lived in a room at what was then the YMCA, and on occasion, answered the telephone at the Y, Hello, this is the Reber Company. A few years later, he would travel around town, with the kids in the back of the car looking for basement foundations that needed plumbing. The Reber Company would later maintain offices in Helena, Great Falls, South Dakota and perform contracts throughout the West. During this time, he also owned and operated the Finlen Hotel in Butte, the Rainbow Hotel in Great Falls and Reber Realty and Development Company, and other businesses. Our dad had four passions in his life: His family, his work, politics and public service. He spent 40 years in public service in many capacities, serving under six governors, from Bonner to Schweitzer. In 1968, he was appointed to serve in the State Senate seat in Lewis and Clark County. His proudest achievement was carrying the bill that created the Montana Vo-Tech system. This system is now a part of the University of Montana. In addition, he revived the bill, creating legislation that established the new Montana Constitution. He was very active in the Democratic Party. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions, when they really meant something, in 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1976 and 1980. He was instrumental in gaining the needed votes to nominate John F. Kennedy for the presidency, and had hosted Senator Kennedy at his home in Helena in 1960. During his political career he met Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton. More recently, he was in contact with Senator Ted Kennedy before he passed on, and was mentioned in the Senator s recent biography. He was a member of the Carroll College Board of Development and instrumental in fundraising for the expansion of that campus. He was awarded an honorary doctor of Laws by Carroll College in 1965. In 1968, the University of Montana awarded him a Certificate of Accomplishment in appreciation of the successful establishment of the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation. and in 2000 the University of Montana also awarded him an honorary Doctor of Business Administration in recognition of his efforts in passing the legislation to create the Vo-Tech system. After his retirement, he and Roz spent 30 years in Indian Wells, Calif., where he served as coordinator of the Bob Hope Classic Golf Tournament for many years. He lived an extraordinary life: He received a high school diploma; without going to high school. He became an apprentice welder in the union; without the required years of experience. He became an officer in the Merchant Marine; without education or officer training. He was a state senator; without ever being elected. He received two college degrees (Carroll and University of Montana); without ever attending a day of classes. In each area he earned his status in an unconventional way and in each area above he excelled in representing whatever it was that was expected of him. He will be missed by his family: Joseph E. and Nikki of Marina Del Ray, Bobbie Corette of Bigfork, Dianna Riley and Larry of Missoula, Bryant and Nonie of Boulder, Colo., and Polson, Susie and Tom Orr of Missoula; his grandchildren, who he used to muster and they would all fall into line: Lorrie Corette Campbell of Butte, Chris Noyd and Steve of Missoula, Shannon Reilley of St. Ignatius, Molly Blakely and Van of Missoula, Christine Riley of Eugene Ore., Michael Riley of Lehigh Acres, Fla., Jordan Riley and Porsche of Missoula, Pate Reber of Denver, Sarah Reber and Ben of Los Angeles, Zachary Reber and Brady of Oakland, Calif., Emily Reber of Seattle, Sam and Katie Orr of Missoula, and Rebecca Reber of Marina Del Ray, Calif.; and his great-grandchildren, Ariel, Land and Meadow Riley, Ian and Emily Campbell, Reed Noyd, Emma and Sally Blakely, Jack Reber Denckla, and Nona, Shanae and Lamar Reber. He had a way with children, and there were many other kids in his life who called him Grampa. On July 4, 2002, The Reber Broadwater Cupola Park was dedicated in his memory by the people of Helena. Our family would like to thank his many caregivers whom he also loved to tell his stories to, Becca and Doris, Angie Rogers of Partners Hospice, Sallie and Lynn at the Springs, and Donn Walmsley, who became an extraordinary friend and helper to Dad. Please know if anyone was omitted that your help was so appreciated. We will miss his intelligence, humor, determination and passion for living. There will be a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Missoula. Cremation has taken place, and ashes will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Any memorials may be sent to Partners Hospice, 2687 Palmer Street, Missoula MT 59808; The Food Bank, 219 S. 3rd Street West, Missoula, MT 59802; and The Missoula Children s Theater, 200 N. Adams St., Missoula, MT 59802. He leaves behind this quote by A. Sachs, Death is more universal than life: Everyone dies but not everyone lives. Condolences may be sent to www.missoulafuneralhomes.com

The family moved to Apple Valley, Calif., where David began his education. He continued his schooling in Bigfork, when the couple moved in May of 1993. While attending school in Bigfork, David began competing in Little Guy Wrestling, taking the state championship in his fifth grade year. In 1997 the family moved to Columbia Falls, where David continued his love of sports and especially wrestling. He won many wrestling matches, and his senior year his brother Ryan was at every match, coaching and cheering his brother to victory. He was ranked No. 1 in state his senior year, graduating in 2004. In 2003, Shayla Dunlap joined the Ampudia family, and shortly after was diagnosed with leukemia. David and Shayla were inseparable and he attended to her care while she recovered. He went on to attend the University of Great Falls on a wrestling scholarship for two years and was ranked 12th in the nation before returning to the valley to attend Flathead Valley Community College. While attending FVCC, David started Advanced Plastering, a drywall business, with a friend and they were very successful. During this time, David also left his studies at FVCC to assist his parents during a difficult time, and Shayla s leukemia returned. David and Shayla were together for over seven years and she was the biggest thing in his life. Among other things, David loved mountain biking, rafting, snowboarding and hanging with his many friends. It was said that his friends always felt safer when David was around. David knew the Lord and has joined in heaven, his Nana, Margaret Butcher; aunt, Bonnie Butcher; uncle, Harold Wayne; and brother, Eric Jonathan, in 1985. He is survived by his parents, Peter and Claudia Ampudia, of Whitefish; two big (little brothers) Peter Christopher, and Ryan Anthony and fiancee, Kimberly Heger; maternal grandfather, Harold Butcher; great-uncle, Harold Huff; aunts, Diane, Lesia and Tresha; paternal grandparents, Robert and Betty Ampudia; uncles, Robby and Rudy; and aunt, Tish. David doted over his nephew Travys and niece Gabriella Neva; and loved his dog, Sadie. A joint celebration of life will be held for David and Shayla at 11 a.m. Friday, July 30, at New Covenant Church on Birch Grove Road. Burial will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbia Falls. A potluck reception will be held immediately following at the Babe Ruth baseball fields on Talbot Road. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for David s family. Allan Baler Leo Andrew Johnson, 84
July 27, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Allan Baler Leo Andrew Johnson, 84

Allan "Baler" Leo Andrew Johnson, 84, a God loving, good-natured father and mentor, died a natural death in his Evergreen home on July 19, 2010. Allan was born June 1, 1926, to Mike Johnson and Clara Ida Johnsen, first generation immigrant farmers from Denmark. They settled at Hector, Minn., and had four sons. Allan was the youngest and was preceded in death by Lester, Wayne and Ivan. Allan's youth and adolescence were spent on the farm at Hector. In high school he lettered in eight-man football. In 1971 he received his high school diploma in Libby, after he and his wife completed their GED together. He had left his education early in Hector in order to enlist in the Navy from 1944 through 1946. In the Navy he attained the rank of seaman first class on the supply ship LST 539 during a campaign to the Republic of the Philippines. For his service to the Armed Forces he received an honorable discharge. After his time in the military, Allan returned to Minnesota and, shortly after, started a custom grain harvesting business that kept him busy traveling from Oklahoma to the Dakotas and Montana, harvesting grain with his combine that he carried on his flatbed truck. His friends started to call him Baler. On one of his lunch breaks, he met Gloria May Gange in Redfield, S.D., where she was employed as a waitress; he took her home. They were married Dec. 2, 1951. Allan remained a devoted husband to Gloria for 42 years. They were physically separated by her death on Feb. 5, 1994. Gloria was the oldest of seven children born to Alfred and Pearl Gange. Allan and Gloria had one son, Larry, born Nov. 11, 1952, in Huron, S.D. Allan was a union member attached to the Operator Engineers and was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Army Corps of Engineers until 1972. His profession and expertise were in operating all types and sizes of cranes. He participated in the construction of numerous dam projects throughout the central and western United States: Oahe in South Dakota; Morrow Point in Colorado; Boundary in Washington; Libby in Montana; and Lower Granite in Washington. He and Gloria moved to Colstrip in 1973 and Allan was involved with the construction of the cranes that remove the overburden of soil from the coal veins. After Colstrip they moved to Big Lake, Minn., and opened the You Make It arts and craft store in Monticello, Minn., with long time friends, Pat and Delbert Stimpson. After a number of successful years in retail, they moved to Murrieta Hot Springs in Riverside County, Calif., where they joined Larry and his family at the Polarity Institute. At the Institute he worked as an auto mechanic. He retired in Hemet, Calif., moving to Kalispell in 1994 to join Larry and his family after Gloria's death. He never remarried. In Kalispell, he assisted in the maintenance of Larry's family business, Mountain Valley Foods. He remained active. Allan lived life on his own terms. Allan's final residence was in Evergreen, where he occupied his remaining years with daily visits to family and friends debating current news events with them. He maintained his own home and automobile. Allan believed in serving his fellow man. He was a Shriner and a very proud 32nd degree Mason with 50 years of involvement. He was the paternal influence in Larry's achieving Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America. He passed on wisdom that goes with helping our neighbors. Survivors include his son, Larry, and his wife, Ananda; daughter-in-law, Anais Starr; granddaughters, Patricia and Lorien; great-grandchildren, Evan and Hailey; and close friend, Lorraine McKenna, of Wilbur, Wash. The surviving family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory of Kalispell, Stevensons Funeral Home of Forsyth, the office of Dr. Marise Johnson, the staff at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, the Forsyth Masonic Lodge, the United States Armed Forces, and all those that helped to bring comfort to Allan in his final days. All correspondence may be directed to 1-406-756-1131. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Aug. 28, at the grave site in Forsyth. Services will include Masonic rites and a military 21-gun salute honoring his services. He will share a common grave marker with his wife. May God bless him and may he rest in peace. In Jesus name, Amen.

John C. Popa Sr., 85
July 27, 2010 6:07 a.m.

John C. Popa Sr., 85

John Popa Sr., husband, father and friend, was collected by angels July 21, 2010, to rest peacefully in his new heavenly home. John was born Dec. 6, 1924, to Romanian immigrants Anna and Vasilie Popa, in Campbell, Ohio. As a young man, he loved to play baseball and go to Romanian dances; and in later life, even danced to the live music of Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller. John graduated from high school at age 16, and attended Youngstown State University for two years. He then joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and had seven tours around the world. On June 12, 1949, he married his sweetheart, Lucretia Lucy Budak, in Ohio. They celebrated 61 years of marriage in June 2010. John and Lucy have four children, Laura, Annette, Joanne and John Jr. In John s work career he worked for Youngstown Sheet and Tube Steel Mill, the Singer Sing Machine Company, and lastly, after moving to Montana, worked from 1955 until retirement for the Anaconda Aluminum Company/ARCO. John was an active community member in Columbia Falls as a City Council representative from 1971 to 1973; and seven years as president of Pee Wee Baseball in the late 1950s and early 60s. John was a golfer and an avid bowler. He bowled for years on local leagues and boasted a 185 average. John was also a life member of the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles. You could not miss his support for the MSU Bobcats, as he sported a Bobcat hat on his outings with Lucy to the Backroom and the Nite Owl Cafe, their favorite eat-out locations. Thanks to the staff at these locations for making their regular dining table away from home feel like home! The family would especially like to thank John and Lucy s care givers, their second family, Jeanne and Dennis Howard; Ginger Owens; Nancy Meyers; and Rich Downen for their endless tender loving care. John outlived all of his family members and was preceded in death by his sister, MaryAnn Dobrich, and his parents. John is survived by his wife, Lucy; his daughter, Laura, and Bill Bishop, and their children, Anna and John Bishop; his daughter, Annette, and Bob Bjelland, and their daughters, Elissa and Jon Oman, and Kari Bjelland; his daughter, Joanne, and Tom Lindlof, and their daughters, Shea Popa-Wood, and Joanna and Bryan Pearson; and his son, John, and Jan Popa, and their sons, Matt and Drew Popa. You left us with great memories, admiration for your ever-sharp thinking and quick wit, and a warm place in our hearts where we will always find you. We know you are the angel with a gin martini and lobster dinner celebrating a good life! A funeral service for John will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, at the Columbia Mortuary in Columbia Falls, with a private family graveside interment to occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests, in Mom s honor, a donation to the Alzheimer s Association.

Warren C. Sparks Sparling, 91
July 22, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Warren C. Sparks Sparling, 91

Warren C. Sparks Sparling, 91, passed away early Sunday morning, July 18, 2010, at his home in Kalispell. He was born on June 22, 1919, in Kalispell, to James and Bernice (LaRue) Sparling. Warren attended Kalispell schools, graduating from Flathead County High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Adeline Larson and together they had one son, Robert David Sparling. Warren served in the military as a lieutenant in the Army during World War II. He was a partner in the family business of the American Timber Co., for most of his career. Warren was very involved in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, singing tenor in the choir for many years, and serving as the congregation president. Playing his guitar, he formed and led a boys choir at the church and was a faithful supporter of the outreach in his giving. Another outreach of his giving was to the Lutheran Bible Institute of Issaquah, Wash., where he served on the board. It is now known as the Trinity Lutheran College of Everett, Wash. Warren and Adeline loved to travel and went on many cruises and trips. They loved to fish and spent time with their son, Bob, and his wife, Sharon, salmon fishing on Vancouver Island and also on golfing trips in Oregon. Bob and Sharon went on some of their cruises with them. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought much joy to their lives. Papa Hataburn as he was affectionately called by his family was always teasing, making up stories and singing songs. His families have many wonderful memories of times at the Flathead Lake cabin. Christmas always found Warren with his Santa uniform and a bag of gifts. Adeline passed away suddenly two days after Christmas this past year and life hadn t been so good for him since then. His Home Option s care givers (who have become like family) tried their best to bring joy into his days and we are so thankful to them. We are also grateful to Sharon Askelson for her care of their home and yard and loving care to their needs for 20 years. Warren is survived by his son, Robert Sparling, and wife, Sharon, of Tacoma, Wash.; granddaughter, Kathy Lumsden, and husband, Terry, of Olalla, Wash., and their two children, Jennifer and Thomas; granddaughter, Jill Scherrer, and husband, Scott, of Post Falls, Idaho, and their daughter, Stephanie; grandson, Bruce Sparling, and wife, Cindy, of Tacoma, and their two children, Jack and Isabel. He is also survived by a sister, Ruth Darnell, of Gig Harbor, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Hollister Larson, of Kalispell; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Warren will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 24, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Debra Abbott officiating. Preceding the service, a brief graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. for family and friends, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. The family suggests memorial gifts be given to the Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp, 603 S. Main St., Kalispell, MT 59901. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Warren s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Warren s tribute wall and offer condolences.

Maybelle Stillman, 87
July 22, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Maybelle Stillman, 87

Our sweet, sweet mom, Maybelle Stillman passed away on the beautiful Sabbath morning of July 18, 2010, in West Jordan, Utah. She was born May 26, 1923, in Kalispell, the daughter of Victor Elmer Munter and Clara Tomina Christopherson Munter. She attended Northside grade school, seventh and eighth grades at Central in Kalispell and graduated in 1941 from Flathead County High School. She married Theron Jackson Stillman in Kalispell on Feb.10, 1945. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Cardston, Alberta, Church of Latter-day Saints Temple on Feb. 15, 1964. As a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in many callings. She was a primary teacher for over 20 years and was given a pin for her years of service. As a member of the Relief Society she served as social relations specialist, secretary to the Ward Relief Society presidency, as a visiting teacher and worked in genealogy extraction. She so enjoyed extracting (both in Montana and Idaho) and would always comment and marvel as to how far back the work was. She particularly enjoyed the people she was working on who came over on the Mayflower. Maybelle loved to make pillows. She would stitch specialized pillows in shapes that matched the person it was for. She made racecars, spud (couch potato) pillows and more. She also started quilting in her 60s, doing all the stitching by hand. It was just her extra personalized touch. She also loved cars (having grown up with a mechanic father) and was very knowledgeable about cars and surprised many with this interest. She loved her sister Doris, and spent as much time as she could with her enjoying endless visiting. She loved to go on day trip rides. You could never visit Mom without going on, at the very least, a couple of rides. It was the best, as was she. She leaves with us her deep testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the perfect example of living what she so firmly believed in. Thank you, Mom. Maybelle is survived by her children, Ted and Claudia Stillman, Gary O. and Jeanine Stillman, Larry A. and Loydene Stillman, Joanne J. and John Henden, Melanie G. Morrison, Tim K. Stillman and daughter-in-law, Kathy K. Stillman; 23 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theron J. Stillman; four children, Vickie M. Stillman, Daniel J. Stillman, Robert J. Stillman and Ronald R. Stillman; a granddaughter, Jennifer Rebecca Stillman; and two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 23, in the Highland LDS 5th Ward Chapel, preceded by a viewing from 9 to 9:45 a.m. (10115 York Shire Drive, South Jordan, Utah). A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 24, in the C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery in Kalispell. We wish to thank Dr. Steven Warren and the staff of Copper Ridge Care Center; in particular, nurses Dawna, Lynn, Alma and aid Tiffany, for their kind and loving care of our mother. We appreciate her sweet roommate Helen for being Mom s angel. We love you all. Condolences can be made to the family at serenicare.com.

Geraldine Ann Feiden Snyder, 82

Gerry passed away Friday, July 16, 2010, at her residence in Lakeside, of natural causes. She was born on July 9, 1928, in Great Falls, the fourth child of Herman and Esther Feiden, former owners of Herman s Flowers. She attended Great Falls High School, skipping school to ride her horse. Gerry married K. Daniel Snyder in 1946. She took a bus to New York City to start her married life, while Dan worked for the New York Times. They returned to Great Falls. Gerry and Dan moved to Missoula where Dan attended the University of Montana. Gerry worked for Heinrich Jewelers and Flowers. Upon Dan s graduation, they moved to Bozeman and started their family. They and two young sons moved back to Great Falls where Dan started his first radio station, later to become KQDI. They continued their broadcasting career with the construction of KRTV. Gerry and Dan had three children, David, Randy and Jacque. Gerry assisted Dan, but her first love was her home and family, insisting on family and recreation time camping and time with her parents on Flathead Lake. Gerry and Dan divorced and Gerry returned to broadcasting, working for KKGF in Great Falls, eventually serving as sales manager. She sent her children to college and, in 1975, moved to her own lakeshore home on Flathead Lake, continuing in sales for KOFI radio. She loved selling advertising, writing ad copy and becoming great friends with her customers. She was an avid gardener, swam in the lake daily and loved cooking for family gatherings. Early-morning water skis or sails on Flathead Lake were a favorite. She retired and moved to Missoula in 1995. She became a Griz fan and was widely known as Gramma Griz, with e-mail addresses to match. She attended many home and away football games. Her family remained her first priority, now tracking grandchildren from infancy through college graduation. Gerry was a lifelong Methodist, starting at the First Methodist in Great Falls, continuing with the Somers United Methodist and finishing with the First United Methodist in Missoula. She attended Bible studies under the Rev. Hugh Herbert and donated many hours to the church s gardens and flowers. She moved to Village Senior Residence in 2007, where she made many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Esther; her brothers, Jim and John Jack Feiden; her sisters, Connie Byers and Vivian Wraalstad; and her niece, Debbie Feiden Grasseschi. She is survived by her children, David Snyder and Gloria Wong of Los Angeles, and Melissa and Mackynze; Randy and Linda Snyder of Bigfork, and Tristan, Arielle and Aftan; and Jacque and Loring Walawander of Missoula, and Luke. Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 30, at the First United Methodist Church in Missoula.

Allard Al Loraine Seelye, 90
July 19, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Allard Al Loraine Seelye, 90

Allard Al Loraine Seelye, 90, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2010, at the Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell. He was born on Feb. 28, 1920, in Watford City, N.D., to George Eugene and May Oretta (Johnson) Seelye, in the old hotel where his grandmother ran a maternity home. Al had three brothers, Dale, Donald and Jack. In 1929 his folks moved to the Dixon farm near Tioga, N.D., and he went to school there, graduating in 1938. He later wrote a book called, The Dixon Farm, to document and share the exciting experiences he had growing up there. Al later went to San Diego and worked two years to the day, helping build B24 airplanes at Consolidated Aircraft Co., during World War II. Then the Navy caught up with him and he attended boot camp in Farragut, Idaho, followed by two years in the world s largest ammunition depot at Hawthorne, Nev. This is where he met Doris Barlow and they dated for one year before he went overseas. Al was stationed in the Philippines aboard ship for one year and following his discharge from the Navy, he and Doris were married June 9, 1946, in Hawthorne. The couple moved to Seattle where Al took a two-and-a-half year course in electronics at Edison VoTech. Al then worked for Gambles in Kalispell doing their electrical repair work. He later worked for the Montana State Highway Department as their two-way radio man until his retirement; and he enjoyed every day of it. Following retirement, Al and his fishing buddy, Hank Dawson, fished all the rivers and lakes in the Flathead. He also started playing the fiddle and was a member of the Fiddling Friends, often accompanied by his wife, Doris, on her guitar. Al was a faithful member of the Central Bible Church in Kalispell and, as one of the workmen when the original facility was built, often claimed he pounded in almost every nail in the building. They have enjoyed many years of camping and fishing, traveling south in the winters, and fiddling for local nursing homes. Al was preceded in death by his parents, and all three brothers. He is survived by his wife, Doris, of Kalispell; two daughters, Sharon Skillman and husband, John, of Lustre, and Melody Nickel and husband, Dan, of Limrick, Ireland; one son, Tim Seelye, and wife, Melodee, of Kalispell; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Al will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, at Central Bible Church with Pastor Ron Youde officiating. Burial will precede the services at the church and will be at 10 a.m. at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Johnson - Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Al s family. She was given the nickname Butch by her classmates because she was athletic, feisty and outgoing. Following high school, Marian enrolled at Minot State College in pursuit of a teaching degree. There, she met Morris Mike Myxter of nearby Balfour, N.D., who was also studying to become a teacher. Their courtship and Mike s studies were put on hold while he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After Mike s return, he and Marian were married in Minot on June 15, 1946. The Myxters lived in many places during their early years together, including Washburn, N.D., Medford, Ore., Polson and Scobey, before moving to Great Falls in 1953. Great Falls became their settled base where they lived for nearly 40 years, had lengthy teaching careers, enjoyed camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities, and raised their only son. They developed many wonderful friendships. In 1966, Marian and Mike purchased a piece of property on Lake Five near Glacier National Park. They parked a brand-new mobile home referred to as the instant cabin there in 1968; and from that point the Myxters were able to fully reap the benefits of the teaching profession by spending entire summers at the lake over portions of four decades. Marian was a sparkplug of a personality and a social butterfly who could raise the energy level of any room she entered. Her laugh and smile were infectious. She had a kind heart and a strong, determined will. She was a terrific wife and mother, and touched many people over the course of her life. Marian is survived by her grateful son, Andy, and Carol Myxter, and grandchildren, Samantha and Alex Myxter, all of Fort Collins. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Ralph Carlson; husband, Morris; and several other relatives and friends. No services are planned; her cremated remains will be taken to Lake Five and other favorite places. Please visit www.allnutt.com to sign the family guest book and send condolences.

Augustine Ahkatuk Gussie Lundquist, 78

Augustine Ahkatuk Gussie Lundquist, 78, of Kalispell, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at her residence with her husband Franklin D. Lundquist at her side. She was born on March 3, 1932, to Raven and Alice ((Hobson) Sheldon. She was one of 15 children, which gave way to many stories to share of her childhood days growing up in Kotzabue, Alaska. Fishing, hunting and sewing were her pastimes. She and her first husband had four children. In 1964, she met Franklin Lundquist, who was stationed in the Air Force near Kotzabue, who had five children of his own. They fell in love and blended their two families into one when they united in marriage on Oct. 21, 1966, in Weldon, N.C., instantly creating a family of 11. In May of 1969, their son Brian was born. With Frank in the Air Force, they moved from North Carolina to Wisconsin, and eventually were stationed in Lakeside at the radar base. They share fond memories of their time in Lakeside, such as fishing at Flathead Lake, country drives and building strong friendships with other families in the small military community. When it came time for her husband to retire they decided to make Kalispell their home and have resided here for the last 30 years. Gussie enjoyed camping and fishing in the summer, hunting in the fall, and more fishing in the winter. She loved to wear her parka out on the lake ice fishing and was very proud of her Eskimo heritage. She sure knew how to keep warm. She will keep all who knew her warm in their hearts when they think of her and the fun times she brought to every gathering. She will be greatly missed by many. Gussie was an FOE 234 Eagle member and also an active member of the Kalispell Moose Lodge. She held several seamstress positions in Kalispell, but her first love was being out in the woods or on the water with her husband and family; camping, hunting, fishing and more fishing. Frank will be forever grateful for the kindness shown by their neighbors and the hospice nurses who came in to help him out during their time of need. Augustine was preceded in death by her daughter, Lou Laws; her grandson, Ian Lundquist; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by her husband, Franklin D. Lundquist Sr.; and their children, Walter Laws of Michigan; Alice Bunny Biddix and husband, Ron, of Michigan; Wayde and Jerry Laws of Alaska; Judy Boudreaux of New York; Dennis Lundquist and wife Vickie, Franklin Lundquist Jr., and Gloria Day and husband Jerry, all of Wisconsin; Denise LaFrenierre of California; Brian Lundquist and wife, Lynda, of Kalispell; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 16, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor David Pestel officiating. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to Home Options Hospice, 430 Windward Way, Suite 101, Kalispell, MT 59901. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home is caring for Gussie s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to offer condolences and sign Gussie s guest book.

Norma Jean Nori Olson Hoffman

What does one say about a friend who was beautiful, funny, spontaneous, laughed and sang in her sleep, and left us on June 13, 2010, to charm all the angels in heaven. Nori was born in Chicago and lived many places before she and Art Houlihan discovered Whitefish sometime in the early 90s. They built their log cabin on Swift Creek at the head of Whitefish Lake and settled in to an exciting life in the mountains where each day found them wind surfing, hiking, skiing, cycling, golfing, playing tennis or taking a horseback trip into the Bob. The past several years they have split their time between Florida and Maine and trips to exotic destinations all over the world. Nori delighted in visits to her children, Jan, Lori and Harry and their families. She had two granddaughters, three grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Nori was a harbinger of goodness and fun and during her years in Whitefish she gathered many friends who will honor her with a Nori Day on her birthday, July 17. Cycling friends are asked to gather at 10 a.m. at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Edgewood (next to Piggy Back Barbeque) in Whitefish on Saturday, July 17, for a bike ride to Meadow Lake Golf Course for lunch. Or choose another activity Nori loved. There will be a potluck picnic that evening at 7 p.m. at Sun Crest Beach on Lacy Lane just off Wisconsin Avenue near Mountain Harbor to share Nori stories and sing songs around the campfire. For those who will be unable to attend Nori Day, please raise your glass and toast Nori at 7 p.m. wherever you might be. Call 862-1377 or 862-3675 for details. Nori was a hospice volunteer who cared deeply for her clients and it was fitting that hospice served her during her illness. Any donations to hospice would be welcome.

James Mark Wood Wolfe, 57, of Columbia Falls, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 9, 2010, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, surrounded by family and close friends. He never left his house without his trusty wood walking stick, his sunglasses, his choice of vest and an unforgettable smile to start the day. During that time she met and married Cecil A. Ripke and had daughter Myrna and son Terry. After the passing of Cecil, Flo supported her family in a variety of ways; she worked in the Kalispell Hospital and later, during World War II, she was a Rosie the Riveter building Liberty ships in the Portland shipyards. During that time she worked high up on the superstructures and when asked if she was afraid of heights responded, A little, but at least up here nothing can hit me in the head! In 1947, Flo married Boyd Shearwood. They settled in Spokane and had daughter Diane. In 1965 she married the love of her life, Edward Park Moore, and settled in Bremerton, Wash. Although they were only married a short time before Ed s passing, they had a wonderful and romantic marriage. You never knew where Flo and Arna would be off to next; A safari in Africa? A bullfight in Spain? Vegas, Hawaii, Mexico? A cruise? They did it all and more, and had a wonderful time! Flo was endowed with a natural sense of empathy and a wonderful sense of humor that made her loved by everyone she met. She will be greatly missed. D. Franklin Kohl, 94
July 8, 2010 6:07 a.m.

D. Franklin Kohl, 94

D. Franklin Kohl of Arlee died at St. Peter s Hospital in Helena on July 6, 2010, following a short illness. Franklin was born to William F. and Edith Ann (Garst) Kohl in Yates Center, Kan., on April 13, 1916, and lived in various parsonages throughout Kansas before the family relocated to Aberdeen, S.D., in the early 1930s. Franklin enjoyed a youth filled with hiking, bird hunting and taxidermy, and helped extend the family s resources by working as a newspaper carrier. After two years of college in Aberdeen, Franklin transferred to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Divinity degrees. At Drake, Franklin met LaVern DeLong who would become his dearest companion for 75 years. Franklin loved to travel and spent the summer of 1937 touring England by bicycle. He preached in various communities in Iowa and Nebraska while completing seminary and accepted his first calling as the minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Grand Island, Neb., in 1939. Franklin and LaVern were wed on Aug. 7, 1940, in Lake City, Iowa, beginning their married life and partnership in Christian ministry. From 1945-1955, Franklin served as the enthusiastic and popular pastor of a large congregation in Maryville, Mo. Throughout his career, he always undertook at least one major project in each church he served " in Maryville it was securing a new pipe organ, an endeavor which took several years to complete. In 1949 he completed additional schooling at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif. In 1955 Franklin and LaVern answered the call of the mountains, which had always been a lure to them, when he assumed the position of minister at the Central Christian Church in Great Falls. He served there until 1966, leading the congregation in the construction of a new education building. Franklin continued his passions for traveling and the great outdoors as he took family and friends on journeys throughout the world, and enjoyed countless hunting, fishing and camping trips in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park. He was also an avid amateur photographer. Christianity, world peace and reconciliation were constant themes in Franklin s life. He completed his ministerial career as the Disciples of Christ regional minister for Montana, from 1967-1981. He spent countless hours driving the highways and byways of Montana, helping to coordinate the state s Christian fellowships. Franklin was also active in the Montana Association of Churches and the Great Falls Ministerial Association; was on the Northwest Christian University Board of Trustees in Eugene, Ore., and the Disciples of Christ Church Extension board of directors; and traveled with the Witness for Peace program to Nicaragua and Guatemala. Following retirement in 1981, Franklin and LaVern spent the next 25 years as members of the American Tree Farm Association, managing their Two Rivers Tree Farm in the Jocko Canyon of western Montana. They were also ardent supporters of the Society of Friends (Quaker) communities in Missoula and St. Ignatius. We lost our beloved Melissa on June 27,
July 6, 2010 6:07 a.m.

We lost our beloved Melissa on June 27,

2010, in a tragic accident. She died with three friends during one of her many adventures on a beautiful, summer day in Western Montana. Melissa was born on March 21,1987, in Rochester, Minn., the first child of Dan and Kathy Weaver. She moved with her parents to Arizona and New Jersey before settling with her family in Billings in July of 1992. She attended Poly Drive Elementary School, Lewis and Clark Middle School and Billings Senior High School, graduating with honors in 2005. During her high school years, Melissa competed on the varsity tennis team, performed as a majorette and played violin in the school orchestra. Melissa loved to sing and was a part of the youth choir at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church for many years. Melissa graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in print journalism from the School of Journalism and a second major in psychology from the University of Montana in May 2009. Melissa was a University Scholar with distinction through the Davidson Honors College. In December 2009, she began work as a reporter journalist for the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell. Melissa was a truly beautiful young lady with a wonderful sense of humor. Her smile would light up the room and was both contagious and comforting. She was an incredible daughter, sister, grandaughter and friend who touched the lives of all who knew her. Her wit was quick and she had a wonderful spirit: Melissa always said yes to life. She was an intelligent and energetic young woman who loved to ski, travel, write and explore the great outdoors. Melissa always gave 110 percent to everything that she did. Her dad taught her that desire and passion are the keys to success in both achievement and life. Melissa personified these ideals. She was never afraid to try new things and was always ready for another exciting adventure. She shared her mother s love of cooking and her kitchen was always stocked with delicious, freshly baked goods. Melissa was a very thoughtful, kind and caring young lady who always took exceptional care of everyone she knew, especially her family. She was a true joy in our lives and was an inspiration to us all. We will never forget her, will always love and miss her, and feel blessed to have known her for 23 years. As usual, Mellie, you are bravely leading the way. Melissa is survived by her loving parents, Dan and Kathy; sisters, Sarah and Emily; brother, Joseph; uncle and godfather, David, and Traci Weaver; uncle, Ben Weaver; aunt and godmother, Lisa Weaver; aunt, Terry Higgins; aunt, Carol, and Stevan Nelson; grandpapa, Walt, and Joann Weaver; grandmother, Jane Weaver; grandmother, Joan Bell; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her beloved grandfather, Carl Bell. The Weaver family would like to extend sincere appreciation to law enforcement in Flathead, Sanders, and Lake counties for their efforts and compassion involved in this difficult search and rescue effort. Special thanks also to the Blaine family and countless friends and neighbors who have gone far beyond the call of duty in supporting us during this difficult time. The outpouring of thoughts and prayers for Melissa and our family have made this more bearable for us. We love you all! Viewing will occur from noon to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. Vigil service and rosary are planned for 7 p.m. Friday, July 9, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 10, also at St. Thomas, with graveside committal and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery immediately to follow. Memorials can be made to either the scholarship fund established in Melissa s name at the University of Montana or Catholic Relief Services.

The British Army had no heavy equipment or operators, and as a result, Wally was attached to Montgomery s British First Army and traveled all the way through Belgium and Germany until the end of the war. Upon being discharged, he returned to Littlefork, spending a short period of time before moving to Montana with Alma and his son Dennis, who was born while he was away. He worked for Woods and Dempsey as a logger and moved on to American Timber Company, and in 1948, to Royal Logging, working for Holly Larson. In 1948 a second son, Richard, also joined the family, followed in 1951 by a daughter, Vicki. Wally resigned as the Logging Superintendent for Royal Logging after 27 years of service. During this period Wally earned his pilot s license. He continued flying into his 70s and his love of aviation lasted the rest of his life. Wally went to work for Foster Construction, headed by his son Dennis, and shortly thereafter, Dick joined them. He was still participating in the company up until age 85. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Stella; his wife, Alma; his sister, Jeannie; his brother, Ray; and two grandsons, Ryan and Chris. He is survived by his companion, Bert Kasper; his sister, Iris Byrne of Missoula; Dennis and Barbara Foster of Somers; Dick and Tammy Foster of Whitefish; Vicki and Doug Bader of Castle Rock, Colo.; six granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6, at Christ Lutheran Church in Whitefish. Donations can be made to the Hoo Hoo Club Needy Children s Fund, P.O. Box 129, Somers, MT 59932, or to the charity of your choice.

Melissa Weaver, 23

Melissa Weaver, 23

We lost our beloved Melissa on June 27, 2010, in a tragic accident. She died with three friends during one of her many adventures on a beautiful summer day in Western Montana. Melissa is survived by her loving parents, Dan and Kathy; sisters, Sarah and Emily; brother, Joseph; uncle and godfather, David (Traci) Weaver; uncle, Ben Weaver; aunt and godmother, Lisa Weaver; aunt, Terry Higgins; aunt, Carol (Stevan) Nelson; grandpapa, Walt (Joann) Weaver; grandmother, Jane Weaver; grandmother, Joan Bell; and many cousins. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. also at St. Thomas, with graveside committal and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery immediately to follow. Memorials can be made to either the scholarship fund established in Melissa s name at the University of Montana or Catholic Relief Services.

Sonny J. Kless, 25
July 3, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Sonny J. Kless, 25

On Sunday, June 27, 2010, Sonny J. Kless flew out of the lives of his friends and family and into the arms of the God he knew. Sonny was born to Jeff Kless and Janelle Gentry on Aug. 13, 1984, in Whangarei, New Zealand. Sonny, true to his nature, always disputed this date and preferred the U.S. date of the 12th. This would be one of the few times he would arrive early. This may also have been a thinly disguised excuse to reap a few extra presents. Sonny spent his early years on board the sailboat, Dark Star, in the Pacific and then in Vancouver, British Columbia. He then spent his time growing up in Colorado, California and Montana. He attended school first in Bigfork and then Kalispell, where he was also active in speech, drama, football and basketball. Sonny was blessed with exceptional intelligence and quick wit. Typically, this comes with mixed blessings. As most parents of young adults know, teenagers can act out. Sonny was no exception. With his typical intensity, and penchant for social economy, a one-hour crime spree brought Sonny an extended two-year stay in Wyoming. This became a blessing in disguise. The desolate countryside and the Spartan living conditions gave Sonny the time to use his intelligence for introspection, and his life took a new direction. Returning to Montana, Sonny attended the University of Montana in Missoula, graduating in May of this year with a double degree in environmental science and communications. While at the U of M, Sonny developed a fund for sustainable education programs to borrow money from, then repay, thus giving sustainable environmental causes sustainable financing. During this time Sonny earned his private pilot s license, a dream he had since childhood. Sonny s goal was to become a commercial pilot. Sonny searched for his path with unrivaled sincerity and curiosity, and in that pursuit accidental heartbreaks would sometimes come to those who loved him. This may be the final heartbreak, but Sonny will continue on his path. Sonny is survived by his mother, Janelle Gentry; and father, Jeff Kless; brother, Dustin Haines, of Eugene, Ore.; and sister, Sydney Kless, of Boulder, Colo. Survivors also include his grandmother, Anne Gentry, of Whitefish; grandfather, J. Gentry of Rifle, Colo.; uncle, Kirk Gentry, and aunt, Michelle Gentry, of Kalispell; aunt, Barbara Kless, and uncle, Jim Kless, of Palm Springs, Calif. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to Lake County or Sanders County search and rescue; or the Student Pilots Scholarship Fund, Glacier Bank, Kalispell. A gathering to remember Sonny will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 3, at Best View Storage, on Columbia Falls Stage Road.

Adelaide Mary Foy, 93
July 1, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Adelaide Mary Foy, 93

Adelaide Mary Foy died peacefully in Middleton, Idaho, on the afternoon of Friday, June 25, 2010. She was born Oct. 24, 1916, on her parents homestead outside of Bainville, Mont., the second child and first daughter of Frederick R. Harvey (1885-1968) and Gertrude Louise Burton (1893-1969). Her father was minister of the Congregational church at nearby Intake, and he also worked as a circuit preacher, serving Savage and Plevna. Between 1919 and 1926, her family lived in Genoa Junction, Elcho, Gleason and Dudley, all in Wisconsin, where she attended primary schools. In 1926 they returned to Bainville, and subsequently she entered high school there, staying in town during the week, working for her board and room. She graduated from Bainville High School in 1933. She attended Intermountain College at Helena, where she experienced the destructive 1935 earthquakes that destroyed the college buildings, finishing her teacher s certificate the following year in Great Falls, where Intermountain had temporarily relocated. She began her career as a teacher in a rural school outside Bainville in the fall of 1936. In 1937 her family moved to Dixon and she taught in rural schools in the area. In 1942 she married James Beauford Jim Foy, owner of a barber shop in Ronan. The two of them spent the war years working in the Kaiser shipyard in Portland. Their son David was born in 1946, and their daughter Judy followed in 1948. In 1948 they relocated to Hot Springs where her husband operated the Rainbow Barber Shop, and where she took up her teaching career again in 1952. She furthered her education by attending summer school in Missoula and studying by correspondence. She was a talented and skillful teacher, becoming elementary principal in 1964, the same year she was awarded her master s degree in education from the University of Montana. The family moved to Columbia Falls in 1964, where she continued teaching until she retired as vice principal in 1979. She remained active in community affairs and, in 1991, was named Montana Senior Citizen of the Year. She and her husband traveled widely in North America after retirement. She was predeceased by her husband; her brothers, Torrance, Almont and Bill Harvey; and her sisters, Nellie Richardson and Lucille Palmer. She is survived by her brothers, Bob and Dale Harvey, of Kalispell; her son, David, of Calgary; and her daughter, Judy Luce, of Caldwell, Idaho; her grandchildren, Mandi Heinle and Ken of Hathaway, Mont., and Cory Luce and Tera of Boise, Idaho; and great-grandchildren, Kassidi and Kadie Heinle, Jasper and Cody Luce, and Jeff Wood of Henderson, Nev. Adelaide was part of a large and loving family. They were an important part of her life and she enjoyed researching and sharing the family s history and genealogy and just spending time with them at the many family gatherings throughout the years. She will always be loved and remembered by her family, friends and the hundreds of students whose lives are better for having experienced her generous heart, her kind and loving spirit and her undaunted positive attitude. A celebration of Adelaide s life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 5, at Lakeside Chapel in Lakeside. Buffalo Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Sue Ann Burnside Nesten, 71
July 1, 2010 6:07 a.m.

Sue Ann Burnside Nesten, 71

Sue Ann Burnside Nesten, 71, passed away on Monday, June 28, 2010, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell. She was born on June 1, 1939, to Glen R. and Mable M. (Murphy) Burnside. Sue Ann was born breech and thought to be stillborn; if not for the attending nurse, the first angel who gave her life, a true spitfire would have never been born. Sue was the fifth of seven children and the runt of the litter, as her brother Ray would fondly refer to her. As a young child, the Burnside-Heil families moved to Montana from Walkerton. The Burnsides lived in Olney and Trego, finally settling in Kalispell on Railroad Street. Sue married the love of her life, Gordon G. Nesten, on Dec. 13, 1958. Gordon and Sue lived in numerous locations in eastern Montana during the early years of their marriage while Gordon completed his apprenticeship to become an electrician. Their daughter, Hope, was born in Culbertson; sons, Billy and Bobby, in Glasgow. After moving back to Kalispell in 1963, Sue and Gordon would be blessed with another son, Rob Ray. Sue and Gordon, with the help of family and friends, built their home in Evergreen and raised their family there. Their home became the central hub, where family and friends would gather for the holidays and family gatherings. While Gordon was on the road making money for his honey, Sue was the boss at home. Along with raising kids, she found the time to raise a garden large enough to feed a small village. She also enjoyed raising cows, pigs, chickens and horses. She was little but mighty, moving irrigation pipe and bucking bales. She loved her children, and adored her grandchildren. She was known as Nannie, Nan, or Gram to them. She was present to welcome each of them into this world. They were her pride and joy; Travis, Justin, Calen, Kelsey and Shannon. Sue, Gordon and sons, along with many family and friends, spent many enjoyable hunting seasons in eastern Montana where many fond memories were made. Sue Ann was preceded in death by, and has been reunited with, her infant son, Bobby James (1960); her parents, Glen (1958) and Mable (1983); sister, Faye Mee (1990); brother, Rex (1968); Jere Jake (2000); and great-nephew, Christopher Schmalz (2006). Those she leaves behind are her loving husband of 51 years, Gordon; daughter, Hope, and her children, Travis, Justin and Shannon, and her husband Jack, all of Kalispell; her sons, Billy and wife, Kim, of Columbia Falls, Rob and wife, Kelly, and their children, Calen and Kelsey, all of Meridian, Idaho; sisters, Gay Rose of Bend, Ore., and Hazel Stefanatz of Kalispell; brothers, Ray Burnside and wife, Marie, of Thompson Falls, Bill Collier and wife, Cherris, of Post Falls, Idaho; an aunt, Jean Burnside of Kalispell; sister-in-law, Nita Wiggins of Spokane; brother-in-law, Frank Harbin of Kalispell; and numerous nieces and nephews, too many to list, whom she loved dearly. Six of her nieces and a granddaughter were named for her. Because of the blessed hands of her second nurse angel and cousin, Rexanne, and many others, they gave us the precious gift of five more days for which we will be forever grateful. Sue s family would like to thank all the nurses and doctors who cared for mom over the years. Sue and Gordon are longtime members of the Kalispell Moose Lodge. Funeral services for Sue will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 2, at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home, with Pastor Tim Bartholomew officiating. Burial will follow services at Glacier Memorial Gardens. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home is caring for Sue s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to offer condolences and sign Sue s guest book.
