Selma Louise Sally Wheaton, 99

Selma Louise Sally Wheaton, born in Kalispell Sept. 30, 1911, passed away in her sleep in Spokane on Oct. 18, 2010, at the age of 99 years. Sally is survived by her sister, Alice, who is 101 years of age. Their parents were Frank and Faith Wheaton, pioneering residents of Kalispell where Frank founded Wheaton Cycle in the early 1900s. Sally graduated from Flathead County High School in 1929 and married Ray Chapel on Nov. 18, 1934. As a civilian military architect, Ray Chapel was stationed in Japan and California. While living Los Angeles in the late 30s, Sally attended beauty school. The couple moved to Spokane in the late 40s and live there until the 60s, when they moved to Seattle. When Ray retired from the Army Corps of Engineers, they moved back to Spokane where they were members of the Commodore Boating Club, and Sally was a member of the League of Women Voters. Together, Sally and Ray bought a mobile home and spent the winters in Mesa, Ariz., and the summers in Spokane, until Ray passed away in 1972. Sally then moved to Mesa where she met and married Frank Trippet who was also from Kalispell. He passed away five months after they were married. While in Mesa, Sally participated in synchronized aquatic ballet. A few years later Sally met Rod O Connell at their class reunion. When he asked if he could sit beside her she said No! I m saving this seat for my future husband. By the end of that summer, they were married and made their home in Arizona. Sally was preceded in death by Ray Chapel, Frank Trippet and Rod O Connell; and her brothers (by age), Robert, Bernard, Harold, Glen and Clark Wheaton. She had 12 nieces and nephews on her side of the family as well as four on Ray s side of the family. She opened her heart and home to all of them, taking them on many road trips which always included swimming which she really enjoyed. Sally s family is planning a private gathering at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of Ball & Dodd Funeral Home, Spokane.

Bette Hiser, 92
October 28, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Bette Hiser, 92

Bette died peacefully in her home on Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born on Aug. 18, 1918, at Whitefish Hospital to Ralph and Lorena Page Cripe. They named her Wilma Elizabeth, but always called her Bette. She spent her youth exploring Whitefish with her older brother Ralph and other neighborhood kids. She loved the outdoors, fishing, swimming, skating and sledding, and grew into a strong, independent adult with a great sense of direction. Bette spent the war years raising her children while Edgar served in the Navy aboard ship. She had lots of support both from her family and Edgar s, but it was her fortitude which got her through those and other tough times. After Edgar s return to Whitefish the couple resumed their life together, enjoying family, playing cards and dancing. They were both active in VFW and Bette was a lifetime member of the ladies auxiliary. The lessons she taught her family about responsibility and duty were well balanced with her sense of humor. Even now, family gatherings ring with overlapping conversations and abundant laughter. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered. Bette was preceded in death by first husband, Edgar Herriges; son, Robert Herriges; second husband, Fred Hiser; and her brother, Ralph Cripe. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Rocks of Kalispell and husband, Russell Rocks, who resides at the Veterans Home in Columbia Falls; Rae and Stan Buckland of Tucson, Ariz.; Ann and Jim Driskell of Kalispell; and Jean and Dale Huntsman of Kalispell; as well as 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Austin Funeral Home with Father Pat Patton officiating. Interment will follow at Whitefish Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Home Options Hospice, 175 Commons Loop, Suite 100, Kalispell, MT 59901.

Patsy G. Marsh, 71
October 28, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Patsy G. Marsh, 71

We lost our very dear wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend at the age of 71, Oct. 18, 2010, after a four-year battle with cancer. Through it all, she remained the same kind, loving, supportive and beautiful woman we have always known. Patsy was born Feb. 7, 1939, in Paradise, to Ruby and Charles Porter. She was the third of six siblings. She met the love of her life, William Marsh, when she was 17 and soon married him in December of 1956. They made their home in Paradise where they first raised their six children. On July 31, 1971, after studying the Bible with Jehovah s Witnesses, Patsy dedicated her life to Jehovah and was baptized. She spent the rest of her life serving her God and one of her greatest joys was sharing the hope she d found with others. She believed with all her heart in the resurrection described in John 5:28-29 where it says, ... the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out ... This hope, along with the assurance in Psalm 37:29 of living forever on a paradise earth with her family and friends brought her great comfort. Some memorable things about Patsy include her kindness to family, friends and strangers alike. She always believed the best in all of us and helped us to believe in it, too. She was always there to celebrate with us during good times, and hold our hand through hard times. We will miss her spiritedness and playfulness. No one loved to play cards (And win!) as much as Patsy. She was passionate about shoes and had many of them. No one had a better sense of humor; she loved to laugh. We never had any doubt about how much she loved us; she told us every chance she could. Patsy is survived by her loving husband of nearly 54 years, Bill; their five children, Lonnie Marsh and Cindy of Missoula, Danny Marsh and Nancy of Missoula, Renae Duffield and Doug of Thompson Falls, Rachel Holland and Derrick of Missoula, and Shaun Marsh of Portland; also eight grandchildren, Ryan Marsh, Shannon Main and Phil, Stephanie Duffy and Casey, Brandon Duffield and Lyndsay, Derrin Holland, Kloe Holland, Kobe Marsh and McKenzie Marsh; also two great-grandchildren, Harpyr Sayler and Aiyana Duffy. She is also survived by her siblings, Bob Porter and Rose, Sandra Palaniuk and Ben, Cookie Riech and Kenny, and Kerry Porter and Sharon. Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ruby Porter; a brother, Eddy Porter; and a cherished son, Daryn.

Kathleen Anne Jordan Jones, 57

Kathleen Anne Jordan Jones, 57, of Bigfork, passed away at her home the morning of Friday, Oct. 22, 2010. Kathy lives on through her husband, Dennis O Neil; son, Jordan O Neil; daughter, Maura Elizabeth; parents, Robert D. and Donna (Cummins) Jordan of Wellfleet, Mass.; sister, Karen Kelly, husband Jim and niece Megan, all of Stafford Springs, Conn.; aunt, Darlene, and uncle, Chot Smith, of Carnegie, Pa.; and uncle, Warren Cummins, of MacDonald, Pa. Kathy was born Sept. 21, 1953, in Pittsfield, Mass. Kathy was a happy child growing up in Dalton, Mass. As a child, Kathy discovered art! Though she was talented in many art forms, it was her etchings and prints that she would go on to win many awards and commendations. After receiving her associate degree at Berkshire Community College, she moved to Central Connecticut State University to finish her Bachelor of Arts degree in art education. At age 25, Kathy moved to live with a friend in Somers. Her love for the beauty of Montana and Flathead Lake was immediate. At the Lookout she planted her knee-high, brown leather Frye high-heeled boots. Family and friends meant the world to Kathy. The children she worked with as a paraprofessional at Deer Park, Russell and Hedges were very dear to her heart. She loved to keep in touch with them as they grew. Kathy continued to express herself creatively through the medium of folk art soft sculpture dolls, Santas and scarecrows, and originally designed ornaments. Those fortunate to have known Kathy will remember her beautiful smile, kind heart and, of course, her sense of humor. Kathy s son Jordon would always say, As a well-spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well-spent brings happy death. A celebration of Kathy s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Mountain View Mennonite Church, 795 Mennonite Church Road, Kalispell. The memorial will be followed by a potluck lunch at the church. To honor Kathy, guests are encouraged to wear an item of blue, the color of peace and Kathy s favorite color. In lieu of flowers, the Jones family suggests that donations be made in Kathy s memory to the Flathead Food Bank, 1203 Highway 2 W. No. 2, Kalispell MT 59901.

Kenneth Elwood Byers, 66

Kenneth Elwood Byers, ready to join his Lord and Savior, passed away in his home, Oct. 19, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was born May 28, 1944, in Medaryville, Ind., to Ennis and Vivian Byers. Growing up on a farm, he had a great love and appreciation for country living. In school he was a proud member of the Future Farmers of America and he graduated from Medaryville High School in 1962. After high school Ken drove semi-trucks across the country. During this time, he pursued his dream to be a pilot and earned his license. He was a pilot in Indiana, Texas and Alaska, before moving to and settling in the Flathead Valley. Ken fulfilled the role of loving husband when he married Jacqueline Dias-da-Cruz on Oct. 28, 1978, in Spokane. Jaqueline moved to Kalispell where Ken was already residing. Shortly after they started their family, first with the birth of their daughter, Nathalie, in 1979 and then a son, Nathan, in 1987. Ken was a man devoted to his family and always put their needs above his own. For a number of years, Ken taught aviation classes at Flathead Valley Community College. He was a wonderful teacher with high expectations of all of his students. During this time, he also worked at Strand Aviation and was a chief flight instructor. In 1975, Ken was awarded Flight Instructor of the Year in his district. In the 1980s, Ken operated his own business from his home repairing photography equipment. His follow-up business venture was custom gun-smithing and reloading, which he continued to operate into this year. In 1991, Ken went to work as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Kalispell. It was from there that he retired in 2008. Ken had a very strong work ethic and worked hard to provide for his family. Following retirement, Ken was able to pursue the many activities that he enjoyed over the course of his life. Ken loved spending time with his family and he had a passion for the great outdoors. His favorite outdoor adventures revolved around hunting, fishing and camping. He was a great gunsmith and enjoyed reloading with his son and best friend, Tim. Other hobbies he enjoyed were photography, vegetable gardening with his daughter and leatherwork. Ken loved to cook and barbecue for his family and friends. Perhaps his greatest passion was for aviation. Ken preferred to be busy and he always had a desire to learn new things. Ken was a man of integrity and morals and he was strong in his faith. He and his family attended Central Christian Church for many years where he served the Lord in a multitude of ways. Later on, Family Life Christian Church would be the place of worship for them. Ken read his Bible on a regular basis. He also held a very strong belief in the Constitution and the principles of the Founding Fathers, and in particular the Second Amendment. His love for his country was profound. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Ennis and Vivian Byers. Ken is survived by his wife, Jaqueline; daughter, Nathalie, and her fiance Jeremiah Maynard; son, Nathan, and grandson Tyron; brother, Phil, and Febe Byers of Waatah, Ind.; brother, Paul, and Gloria Byers of Medaryville, Ind.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude to Frontier Hospice. Their assistance enabled them to honor Ken s wishes to be home during his final days. Funeral services for Ken will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Family Life Christian Church on Foys Lake Road. Interment will follow at C.E. Conrad Cemetery, Kalispell. Visitation will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Johnson - Gloschat Funeral Home. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to Frontier Hospice, 1111 S. Main Street, Kalispell, MT 59901. Johnson - Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Ken s family.

William 'Bill' Earl Leonard, 72
October 25, 2010 6:10 a.m.

William 'Bill' Earl Leonard, 72

Bill Leonard passed away peacefully at his home in Whitefish on Oct. 21, 2010, with his family by his side. He was born Sept. 28, 1938, in Havre to Edward L. Leonard Sr. and Thelma Richards Leonard of Chinook. A memorial service to celebrate Bill s life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the Whitefish United Methodist Church, 1150 Wisconsin Ave., in Whitefish, with refreshments to follow. Bill was a spirited youth who caused his parents considerable grief along with abundant joy. He anchored the line of the Chinook Sugarbeaters championship football team in 1955 and was president of the Chinook High School student council. Bill relished the challenge of scouting, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and attending the 1953 National Jamboree in California. These early leadership achievements earned Bill a nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy, but color blindness precluded him from matriculating. Bill attended Montana State University in the late 1950s and later graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor s degree in business administration. While at MSU, Bill pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon. In 1974 he completed his formal education with a master s degree in education administration from the University of Southern California. In 1959 Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and later graduated from Officer Candidate School. Commissioned a second lieutenant of artillery, Bill served a distinguished career with assignments in Japan, Vietnam, Germany and numerous stateside postings culminating at Fort Ord, Calif., where he retired at the rank of major in 1978. For valor in combat, Bill earned the Bronze Star with V device and 2 oak leaf clusters. While an ROTC instructor at South Dakota State University, Bill met his lifelong companion and soul mate, Ruth Wilson. They were married in Brookings, S.D., on May 30, 1970. Following military service and tenure with the Burlington Northern Railroad, Bill owned and operated two businesses, managed the Whitefish Water and Sewer District and served as a rural water and waste water consultant for the Midwest Assistance Partnership in Montana. His involvement in the latter two organizations complimented Bill s interest in improving his community and the environment. Throughout his life Bill had a love for the great outdoors which passed from his father and he, in turn, passed on to his sons. Hunting, fishing and camping were Bill s passions. He generously supported the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and other outdoor-oriented organizations. Montana occupied a special place in Bill s heart. Some of his favorite places included his boyhood home of Chinook, Blaine County and the Bear Paw Mountains. Summers spent on Whitefish Lake and in Glacier Park endeared him to the northwest, where Ruth and he established their permanent home upon his retirement from the U.S. Army. Most recently, Bill and Ruth found beauty and tranquility in the Big Hole valley of southwest Montana. Bill was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Chinook, the Whitefish chapter of Rotary International and the Whitefish United Methodist Church. He is survived by Ruth, his wife of 40 years; son, Kevin and wife, Trudy of Stafford, Va.; son, Shawn and wife, Heather and grandchildren, Talon and Ea Rose of Valrico, Fla.; brother, Richard and wife, Ann of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, Edward and wife, Peggy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; and lifelong friend, Gary Mick Morris. In lieu of flowers, Bill s family recommends a contribution in his honor be made to the Whitefish United Methodist Church, P.O. 4248, Whitefish, MT 59937; or the Blaine County Wildlife Museum, P.O. 304, Chinook, MT 59523. Austin Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Bill s family.

John Dewayne Morrow, 55
October 25, 2010 6:10 a.m.

John Dewayne Morrow, 55

Our family and the community of Lakeside are feeling a tremendous loss with the unexpected death of John Dewayne Morrow on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010. John was enjoying one of his favorite pastimes with a couple of his best friends when he suffered a heart attack after just having hit two of the greatest shots in all his years of playing golf. John was born May 16, 1955, in Kalispell, to Harold and Louise Vaughan Morrow. He had to walk all the way across the alley to attended Peterson Elementary and graduated from Flathead High School in 1973. He attended FVCC and the University of Montana (go Griz). In 1976, he married his high school sweetheart, Randee Redpath, at her parents Flathead Lake home. In 1979, their daughter, Maren, was born. He spent many years being her basketball coach and her cheering section. Maren s arrival could only be topped by the birth of his two grandchildren. John was active in the Somers Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years. He was a charter member of the Lakeside Quick Response Unit, responding to an average of 200 calls a year for 27 years. He was the epitome of quick response as he was usually the first one on the scene (because he drove too fast). He was always there to assist anyone in trouble. He touched so many lives of this valley, whether it was through the fire department, the QRU or running to the store after hours for customer plumbing emergencies. He enjoyed hunting, bowling, golfing, fishing and skiing. He was a true blue Dolphins fan, win or lose. But his biggest passion was being Sadee and Jonathan s Papa. During his high school years, he assisted his father Harold in running the West Shore mail route for the post office. He started working at Sliters Lumber Company in Somers in 1977, following on the shirttails of his father-in-law, Howard Redpath. In 1998, he was named manager at the Lakeside Sliters ACE Hardware, where he was employed at the time of his death. He gave many loyal years devoted to the Sliters. He and Randee enjoyed attending ACE shows that allowed them to visit many different cities. John was preceded in death by his father, Harold Wayne Morrow; his sister-in-law, Connie Stein; his brother-in-law, Cecil Main; and his father- and mother-in-law, Howard and Peggy Redpath. He is survived by his mother, Louise Morrow, of Kalispell; his wife and best friend, Randee, of Lakeside; their daughter, Maren, and her husband Aaron King, and their children, Sadee and Jonathan of Ferndale; his sister, Cheryl Main, of Newman Lake, Wash.; sister, Jeanie, and Dan Stetler of Kalispell, and children, Michele Beck of Connecticut, and Sarah and Dan Fjheld, and their son Gabe; brother, Bob, and Kelly Morrow, and their daughters, Jemma and Julia, all of Kalispell; brother-in-law, Dennis Redpath, and his family, Monica Bradford and Dennis Jr.; brother-in-law, Frank, and Sherry Stein; sister-in-law, Janet, and Dan Bourne, and their family, Shannie Heston and Corrie Bourne; numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and too many other friends to mention. He will be loved, respected and greatly missed by all those he has left behind. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Somers Middle School gymnasium, with Dennis Reese, pastor of the Lakeside Community Church, officiating, with a reception immediately following the service. Theresa Jean Barron Kinniburgh, 42

Theresa Jean Barron Kinniburgh, 42

Theresa Jean Barron Kinniburgh, 42, of Havre, died Oct. 21, 2010, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident some years ago. She was born Sept. 21, 1968, in Kalispell, the daughter of Richard L. and Nancy (Poston) Barron. She attended Helena Flats Elementary School and graduated from Flathead High School in 1986. Shortly after her graduation, Theresa was involved in a major automobile accident involving a reckless driver. Theresa nearly lost her life that day in 1987; however, her extreme determination and faith allowed her to overcome the odds. She spent nearly an entire year in the hospital, but she never fully recovered from the extensive injuries she sustained. Unfortunately, these injuries plagued her for the remainder of her life, and ultimately led to her death. Despite her many health battles and the fact that she was going blind, Theresa never once complained. Her positive attitude, compassion and exuberance for life were inspirational to all who knew her. In her own words, Theresa said, I figure every day that I am still alive is a bonus. Theresa married her high school sweetheart, Dennis Kinniburgh, in 1992, and went on to have three children. Dennis and her children were a constant source of pride and joy for Theresa. Besides walking many miles a day, Theresa enjoyed baking, fishing and camping, but most of all enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. In February 2010, Theresa completed a one-month program in Portland at Guide Dogs for the Blind, where she was paired with her loyal guide dog, Dusky. Theresa leaves behind her beloved husband, Dennis, and their three children, Patrick, Paul and Peter Kinniburgh, all of Havre; her parents, Richard and Nancy Barron, of Kalispell; her sister, Paula, and Kelly Standon, of Columbia Falls; her brother, Bruce, and Cindy Barron, of Palmdale, Calif.; her twin brother, Mark, and Cammi Barron, of Kalispell; and sister, Andrea, and Ron Barron, of Bangkok, Thailand. Also surviving is her mother-in-law, Juanita Kinniburgh, of Havre; sister-in-law, Juanetta, and Matt Schrepfer, of Eureka, and brothers-in-law, Dale and Cathy of Libby, David and Muffie of Minnesota, and Dan Kinniburgh of Louisiana. Theresa also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and her devoted guide dog Dusky. A memorial service for Theresa is being planned for July 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Portland, Ore., Guide Dogs for the Blind at Donations Department, Guide Dogs for the Blind, P.O. Box 3950, San Rafael, CA 94912-3950; or charity of choice. Theresa will forever be loved and missed.

Craig Alan Hickenbotham, 60

Craig Alan Hickenbotham, 60, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, at his home in Bigfork, Montana. He was born Jan. 24, 1950, in Aberdeen, S.D., to Donald and Grace Hickenbotham. He graduated from Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, in 1968. Craig served in the U.S. Army until 1971, when he was honorably discharged with a medal for being a sharpshooter. Craig married June Williams on Aug. 5, 1972, in Phillip, S.D. They moved to Hardin to fulfill Craig s lifelong dream of being a cowboy. He then attended Montana State University and learned the trade of horseshoeing that he used for many years. His love of cowboying and country moved them many times until they finally settled in Bigfork. They later divorced but remained friends. He worked as a packer for Glacier National Park and after 26 years he found himself retired. He was a hardworking cowboy, however, and the textbook idea of retiring was not for him. He continued to run his ranch and farm with all the love and passion for the lifestyle he had always cherished. Craig enjoyed hunting, horseback riding, music festivals, cowboy poetry, singing new country and spending all the time he could with friends and family. He was a member of the NRA. Craig will be deeply missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly. He is survived by his children, Jennifer Roberts and husband, Jay of Meridian, Idaho, Carmen Hickenbotham and husband, Stuart Fillingim of Kalispell, and Cody Hickenbotham of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren, Riley and Conner Roberts and Timbre-Lynn and Sheyenne Fillingim; as well as his sisters, Mary Kay Robinson, Deborah and Craig Bybee and Charleen Hickenbotham; and many nieces and nephews. He was also survived by his important longtime companion, Jean Ervin. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and his older brother, Damien Chuck Hickenbotham. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated for Craig on Friday, Oct. 22, at Pope John Paul II Catholic Church in Bigfork. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Craig s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Craig s guest book, offer condolences and share memories.

Barbara Kaye Bennetts, 68
October 24, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Barbara Kaye Bennetts, 68

Barbara Kaye Bennetts, 68, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, of ovarian cancer at her home in Elmo. She was born in Glendive and spent her first 53 years in Missoula, Helena, and the Flathead Valley, always near four generations of family. She graduated from Missoula schools, including the University of Montana. She succeeded in at least five different careers, including secretary, state legislator, fire lookout, real estate broker, federal employee, and Mom, during which she continually lobbied for women s rights, the environment, Montana s wild places and animals, and the underserved. For the last 30 years, Barbara was an active and grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-anon; in that capacity, her example doubtless saved many lives. To say that Barbara enjoyed the outdoors would be an understatement. She loved skiing, backpacking, canoeing, camping, bears and wolves. She also nurtured her organic garden in Elmo. Her grandchildren brought her endless joy. She passed her enthusiasm for all of these pursuits on to them, and they reflect her passion daily. She enjoyed a good adventure: she rode her bike around Flathead Lake as a young girl; skied several miles of the Bob Marshall in the winter; climbed many Montana peaks; canoed the Missouri repeatedly; survived hairy whitewater experiences; and patrolled ski areas. She even insisted on embarking on a five-day hike a few weeks before her death, only to make it one day in before having to turn back. She never stopped living to the fullest. Barbara also nurtured a life-long love of Native Americans. She worked through the federal government to extend grants to tribes from Alaska to Hawaii. She studied and enjoyed many books on Native Americans. And, finally, she built her modest home on the reservation in Elmo, where the people were very kind to her. She embarked on her next trip just as she wished: on her couch, facing Chief Cliff, holding the hands of both daughters, Bonnie Bennetts-Moul of Santa Monica, Calif., and Stacey Bennetts of Seattle, as well as her never-quite-ex-husband Charlie Bennetts of Woods Bay and Elmo. Her beloved grandchildren Zachariah Moul, Elijah Moul, Finnegan Carroll, and Bazyl Carroll carry her imprint in their souls. Barbara is also survived by her mother Catherine Hay, and her brother Ronald Hay, both of Missoula. Her father, Clarence Hay, and brothers, Doug and Steven preceded her in death. She leaves behind many wonderful friends and extended family. A private family burial was held at Natural Cemeteries, at 40060 Montana 83, Swan Lake. She is buried adjacent to Moose Meadow, nestled between two of her favorite hiking ranges, the Bob Marshall Wilderness and the Mission Mountain Wilderness. Even in her death she strove to be in harmony with nature in a cemetery where earth s natural process is used to recycle. For directions, call Natural Cemeteries at (406) 754-0136. Any donations may be made to the Garden of 1000 Buddahs in Arlee at ewanbuddhagarden.org. A summer celebration of Barbara s life will be held at her home in Elmo in July 2011. Contact the family if you would like to attend.

Lloyd W. Wilson, 85

Lloyd W. Wilson, 85, husband, father, grandfather and retired Flathead High School teacher, died Oct. 14, 2010, at his home in Yuma, Ariz. Lloyd was born July 28, 1925, in Paxton, Ill., the son of Clarence and Ida Wilson and the youngest of five children. He spent his childhood in Mason City, Iowa, and graduated from high school with honors. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served on a merchant ship in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was injured when a torpedo hit the ship. He graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education, and obtained his Master of Science degree from Colorado State University in 1951. Lloyd met Mary Vangeline Goodrich, the love of his life, on the USO Club dance floor at Treasure Island in San Francisco. They were married in April 1944, and spent 66 enjoyable years together. Lloyd began his teaching career at Flathead High School in 1951 where he taught drafting, printing, bookbinding, leather craft and driver s education. He was one of the most highly respected teachers by the Flathead High students. He retired in 1984 after 33 devoted years. To know Lloyd is to know the romantic, enchanting Flathead Lake. Lloyd shared his passion for the lake through singing both gospel and romantic songs to the local residents on one of his moonlight cruises. He loved to dance, whether it be with his own two legs or with the beat of his toes. He was light on his feet for a man of his 6-foot, 6-inch frame and fondly was known as Twinkle Toes. Lloyd loved to hunt and fish with the reverence and respect of the Great White Hunter. He was an excellent marksman. Lloyd s most highly treasured possession was his unconditional love and compassion for his wife, Vange. They were at each other s side through good times and bad, and truly lived the gospel of Christ through their marriage. Their compassion and unconditional acceptance of others was known throughout the Flathead Valley. They opened their hearts and home on Flathead Lake to treasured family members, friends and weary travelers who needed assistance. Lloyd and Vange gave to others from their heart. Those gifts will always live on through the lives of those they touched through their careers and friendships. Lloyd was known to many as Captain, Dad and Confident. Lloyd truly embraced love, life and the Creator s gifts with his loving heart and giving hands. His greatest love was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ida (Iler) Wilson; and his five siblings, Alta (Wilson) Lund, Wayne Wilson, Juanita (Wilson) Stephan, and LaVon Bonnie (Wilson) Rabe. Lloyd is survived by wife, Vange; sons, Brent and Karen-Jo of Yuma, and Richard and Rosie of Rollins; grandsons, Daniel of Lewistown, and David of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will always be loved, respected and greatly missed by those he left behind. Lloyd was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Dayton Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge, and the Disabled American Veterans of which he served as president for several years. Beloved niece Mary Ellen Miller wrote of her uncle, Lloyd, You are now the first mate on the Creator s ship. A memorial service will be held in Kalispell next summer. Carl A. Seifert, 72

Following a long and painful battle, Carl A. Seifert, 72, of Polson, passed away peacefully on Oct. 19, 2010, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson, surrounded by his family. Carl was born to Albert H. and Betty Seifert on July 2, 1938, in Polson. He was raised on a combination farm and cattle ranch in Eli Gap and Reservoir Valley. He always believed that was where he got his education in life. He attended grade school in Reservoir Valley south of Pablo Reservoir, and later graduated from Polson High School. He married Peggy Long in 1955. After graduation he spent the rest of his life in Polson in various businesses. He purchased a Union Oil service station and bulk distributorship shortly after graduation, later adding a large tire shop and general garage, and small engine repair, which he operated until 1972. Carl and Peggy purchased a farm/ranch combination in 1967 northwest of Polson, located near Sunny Slope Hill west of town where they raised hay, grain and registered Hereford cattle. In June of 1973 he purchased the Polson Ready Mix, expanding that business to include concrete work and general construction until 1984, while continuing to live at the ranch. They moved to town in 1990 after selling the ranch and Carl began selling real estate. A short time later he became broker-owner of Mission Mountain Realty and sold real estate until his death. Over the years he took pride in keeping his ranch immaculate, raising registered horned Herefords, raising and training registered Chesapeake dogs, and providing or creating jobs for many. In the fall of 1972, he was elected Montana state representative from Lake County and served in that capacity until 1984. Among his many legislative accomplishments was the introduction of a House resolution to fund a study of the Flathead Lake region, which later resulted in the creation of the Flathead Basin Commission. Carl s life philosophy was centered on a strong work ethic. Carl enjoyed spending time with friends and family " especially at their cabin on the Swan River, working with L.M. Benson on pack trips in the Bob Marshall, float trips in the Bob Marshall, and fishing trips to the coast with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling with friends to world destinations, being Santa s helper for many years, and most recently playing game warden and hunting elk on a good friend s ranch near Drummond. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since 1959, a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a master Mason for 50 years, a honorary life member of the Royal Arch Masons, a member of the Jesters of Montana, a 50-year member of the Bagdad Shrine Temple and past president of the Salish Shrine Club, a member of Polson Elks Lodge No. 1965 for 53 years, and served seven years in the Montana National Guard, attaining the rank of battalion motor pool sergeant for the 639th field artillery division. Carl was preceded in death by his father and mother, Al and Betty Seifert; and three sisters, Barbara, Bonita and Mary, who died at a young age. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, of Polson; sisters, Joan and Howard Andersen of Polson, Gloria and Jim Crawford of Moses Lake, Wash., and Kathleen Hartsoch and Dave Kesting of Polson; children, Ilene and Steve Hamilton of Bothell, Wash., Keith and Jeanne Seifert of Glendive, Noreen and Jim Jackson of Polson, and Scott and Ivy Seifert of Missoula; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; along with all of his friends. He was a beloved father figure to many, including Lee Draughan and Michael Ross, whom he helped raise for a short time. Visitation for friends and family will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Grogan Funeral Home, Polson. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Polson. Interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, Polson, followed by a reception at the Polson Elks Club. Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church building fund, or to the Salish Shrine club. Messages of condolence and remembrances of Carl are encouraged and may be left with the family online by visiting www.groganfuneralhome.com. The staff of Grogan Funeral Home, Polson, considers it a privilege to care for the Seifert family.

Catherine Sandra Wilson, 70

Catherine Sandra Wilson, 70

Catherine Sandra Wilson, 70, died after a short illness on Monday, Oct. 18, 2010. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Cathy had touched in her memorable life. Cathy was born in Great Falls on Feb. 14, 1940, to Charles and Edith Goudie, who had emigrated in the 1920s from the Shetland Islands. Known as Sandy early in life, she attended Great Falls High, and then the University of Montana and Montana State where she earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education. While in college, she met Stuart Wilson and they married on Sept. 21, 1960. Son Mark was born the next year. Cathy began her career in Spokane, teaching special needs children. After moving back to Great Falls, Cathy served as a substitute teacher for many years. Daughters Laurie and Anne Marie were added to the family during that time. In 1974, the family moved to Kalispell and Cathy opened the Wilson Preschool/Kindergarten. Over the next 34 years, she taught over 1,200 children, many of whom were second-generation students. The lower level of their home was magically transformed into a place where young ladies and gentlemen absorbed social skills and a love of learning and became a true family. Her sweet nature and disciplined approach were renowned in the Flathead Valley. The Wilsons opened Tile Plus flooring store 20 years ago. Cathy enjoyed working with customers, helping them design and decorate their homes. After retiring as a teacher in 2008, she devoted even more time to the store, putting her imprint on the community in a different way. Cathy participated in the local P.E.O. Chapter and supported her girls in Job s Daughters. Cathy was an avid supporter of her beloved Montana Grizzlies, Flathead Braves, Glacier Wolfpack and, most recently, the Montana Tech Orediggers, where two of her grandsons are student athletes in football. Above everything else, Cathy loved and supported her grandchildren in Kalispell and Missoula. Some of the best times were spent at their cabin on Ashley Lake. Cathy s friends and family will all attest to her unwavering kindness and generosity. In Cathy s 70 years she used every minute, working hard and enjoying life to the fullest. Not being positive was a waste of time. She leaves a big empty space for her family and friends, but wonderful memories of her full-tilt life. Cathy is survived by husband, Stu; son, Mark and Renell of Kalispell, and their children, Jareth, Kramer and Halle; daughter Laurie Pace and John Brownell of Missoula, and sons, Tanner and Quinn; daughter Anne and Chuck Marvin of Missoula, and sons, Jordan and Bailey; and brother, Harland and Joanne Goudie and his daughters, Kate and Patrick Howell, and Leslie and Steven Warner and grandchildren, Katie and James. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the P.E.O. Jane Hammer Holmgren Foundation, in care of Sue Ori, 113 Riverview Drive, Kalispell, MT 59901. A celebration of life and service of remembrance for family, students and friends will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, at Northridge Lutheran Church, 323 Northridge Drive, Kalispell. To send condolences to the family, please go to www.buffalohillfh.com. Buffalo Hill Funeral Home is caring for the family.

Yvonne J. Lane, 102

After a long, full life of 102 years, Yvonne J. Lane died of natural causes on Oct. 19, 2010. She left this world peacefully in her sleep in the company of family at Wel-Life in Kalispell. Yvonne was born in Webster County, Mo., on Sept. 6, 1908, and raised in the Fordland area of southwest Missouri. Yvonne graduated from high school in Marshfield, Mo., and also attended Teacher s College there. She taught school for a year in a one-room school near Marshfield. Yvonne married Ellis Burks on Feb. 13, 1929, in Springfield, Mo. She and Ellis had one daughter, Alice Joan Burks. Mr. and Mrs. Burks were divorced on Jan. 27, 1935. Yvonne and her young daughter Joan traveled to western Montana on the train in the mid-1930s to join extended family already living in Missoula and Ronan. After working odd jobs in both Missoula and Ronan, she worked at the Ronan Post Office for 38 years, serving as postmaster for the last six of those years. During most of that time she walked to and from work, no matter what the weather. Yvonne enjoyed working with the public and commented many times that she wished she could still work. Yvonne loved her family and lived much of her life in Ronan with her mother May and sister Hazel. She was a member of the Ronan Christian Church for many years. Yvonne enjoyed sewing, baking, needlework and gardening. Older Ronan residents may remember the beautiful gladiola gardens her family proudly maintained at their residence along Highway 93 in Ronan. This past spring, at the age of 101, she continued the tradition of helping her granddaughter Susie plant flowers at her home in Kalispell, and was able to come see the beautiful flowers on her 102nd birthday in September. Yvonne was a pioneer, always dedicated and hard-working. Her strength and determination were admired by family and friends. She was never one to give up, even when the challenges were great. Her quick wit and humor were with her until her final days. Even then, she offered a few smiles and her own special wink. Yvonne is survived by her daughter, Alice Joan and John Hanger of Missoula; and grandchildren, Karen and Glen Adams of Potosi, Mo., Susie and Jon Alper of Kalispell, John C. and Jennifer Hanger of Alpharetta, Ga., and Julie Hainline of Missoula; great-grandchildren, Ben Smith of Milwaukee, Wis., Libby Fields of Columbia Falls, Sophie Hainline and Jonathan Hainline of Missoula, and Larisa Hanger, Ana Hanger, Katia Hanger and Zachary Hanger of Alpharetta, Ga. She was preceded in death by her mother, May Byrd Lane; father, Thomas R. Lane; and sister, Hazel Lane Menter. Kerrie Byrne, 58
October 21, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Kerrie Byrne, 58

Kerrie Byrne, Whitefish teacher and community activist, inspired countless friends, family, students and acquaintances with her passion, grace, tenacity and wisdom. Her peaceful death at home on Oct. 18, 2010, tears a hole in the fabric of the numerous communities that nourished her. Yet, because she helped weave that cloth, her impact will outlast all of us. Kerrie was born May 9, 1952, in Redondo Beach, Calif., and grew up in southern California. Early in life she developed a deep love for nature and animals wild and domestic. She moved briefly to Lake Tahoe and Idaho s Stanley Basin before landing in Whitefish in 1974, where she initially worked as a waitress. While preparing to enter the University of Montana School of Journalism, Kerrie learned she had Hodgkin s lymphoma. She went on to be one of the early survivors of that disease, thanks to advancements in radiation therapy, coupled with her sheer determination. Stopping the cancer bought her another 34 years of life, which she lived to the fullest. She received a degree in education at Montana State University and spent most of her career teaching fourth- and fifth-graders in Whitefish. She was deeply devoted to her students, as well as family, friends, garden, animals and Montana wilderness. She also enjoyed reading and cooking. On Thanksgiving 1997, she married Steve Thompson, of Whitefish. Unfortunately, the radiation treatments that saved her life carried very serious side effects. The radiation damaged her internal tissue and vital organs, steadily eroding her health over the ensuing decades. After retiring from education in 2004 due to her disability, Kerrie redoubled her efforts as a community volunteer in Whitefish. Most recently, she was active in the new dog park, downtown farmers market, city weed committee, Farmhands, and numerous groups devoted to protecting wildlife habitat. She rescued and fostered several dogs over the years. Her happiest memories were enjoying nature with Steve and the pack on outdoor adventures across Montana and beyond. Kerrie was in the care of Hospice and a small army of people who loved her, which allowed her to die at home, surrounded by friends and her devoted husband. Dr. Joan Miller, Kerrie s physician for more than 30 years, and the girls at the Professional Center in Columbia Falls forever earn our deepest gratitude. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Velma. She is survived by husband, Steve Thompson; sister, Kris Hollowaty, and husband, Greg, of California; brother, Steve Byrne, of California; nieces, Samantha and Olivia Thompson, of Ohio; and her original partner and lifelong friend, Steve McCluskey, of Arlee. Kerrie was buried on private land in a beautiful ceremony as howling wolves serenaded in nearby Glacier National Park. A public celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Whitefish Armory, followed by a potluck dinner. A memorial account has been set up with the Cinnabar Foundation, Montana s homegrown conservation fund. Donations may be sent to the Kerrie Byrne Permanent Fund for Wildlife Conservation, The Cinnabar Foundation, P.O. Box 5282, Whitefish, MT 59937.

Virginia Margaret Hawes LaBrant, 96
October 20, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Virginia Margaret Hawes LaBrant, 96

Virginia Margaret Hawes LaBrant, 96, was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, in Prescott, Ariz. She was born Jan. 7, 1914, in Blackduck, Minn., to Emmet and Archabell (Bartlett) Hawes. She moved with her parents to Stanley, N.D., as an infant and was the oldest of 13 children. Being the oldest of 13 children, her childhood was replaced with many adult responsibilities. Her character, positive attitude and strong work ethics supported her throughout her life. Instilling these qualities in her children made her proud of their accomplishments and those of her grand- and great-grandchildren. In 1938, as an area coal mine cook, she met the love of her life, Arthur Duane LaBrant. They were married Jan. 6, 1940, and soon began farming in the area. In pursuit of better farm land, they moved in 1947 with their five children, farm equipment and livestock to Flathead County. They settled in the Creston area and lived there until after her husband died. The road to Echo Lake bears the family name. The family worked together to help with the crops, gardening and caring for livestock. They became active members of the Creston East Side Grange, and were involved in all the activities of 4-H and FFA. She was a longtime member of the Creston Homemakers Club. Virginia thrived in her chosen role as wife, homemaker and mother. She loved to cook for any occasion. Food was plentiful on their farm and she loved to share produce and homemade foods with the neighbors. Her love of cooking continued at the Echo Lake Cafe in Bigfork for nearly 20 years. She was famous for her homemade pies, pastries and breads. Upon retirement, she volunteered at the Kalispell Food Bank for eight years. She moved to Somers in 1972 and continued to live there until 2006, at which time, she moved to Prescott to be near her daughter, Ardis, and family. She attended Bethany Lutheran Church in Bigfork, and became a member of American Lutheran Church upon moving to Prescott. Virginia was blessed with a long and healthy life. She will always be remembered for her family meals, popcorn balls, candy stashes and her vegetable and flower gardens which she maintained until she was 91. She never considered herself to be old, even at 96, and was proud she didn t get gray hair. Virginia was a very productive and generous person. She started each day at 6 a.m. with a positive attitude and ended it at sunset with a sense of accomplishment and pride. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by a son, Harlan, in 1968; husband, Duane, in 1971; her parents and 10 of her siblings. She is survived by her children, Ardis and Don Baker of Prescott, Floyd and Toni LaBrant of Corvallis, Larry and Nancy LaBrant of Burnet, Texas, and Lois and Dale Lauman of Lakeside. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Karen and John Benediktson of Bozeman, Jeanne and Jeff Borer of Everett, Wash., Mark LaBrant of San Marcos, Texas, Eric and Danika LaBrant of Houston, Paul LaBrant of Lubbock, Texas, Darron and Erika Baker of Chino Valley, Ariz., and Lynette Baker of Prescott. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Sara Borer, Aiden Borer, Marisa Borer, Dorien Baker, Abbigail Baker, Anna Benediktson, Jacob LaBrant and Kyle LaBrant; as well as, her sisters, Isabelle Amundson Dougherty of Kalispell, and Vivian O Brien of Portage, Ind.; and many nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Virginia will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Glacier Memorial Gardens in Kalispell. The family suggests a donation in Virginia s honor to the Center for Missing and Exploited Children, www.missingkids.com/safe; or to the charity of your choice. Gary married Jeanette Therrien on Aug. 14, 1958, at St. Matthew s Catholic Church in Kalispell. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in August of this year. Gary and his brother-in-law bought the business after the death of his father-in-law. Gary loved bowling, lake trout fishing, playing craps in Las Vegas, playing pool and telling his famous Chinese joke. His lawn has been described by many as looking like velvet. Gary s health forced him to retire in 1998. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and June Hoxmer; and daughter, Laurie Hoxmer. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; son, Steve Hoxmer, of Las Vegas; daughter, Valerie Goss, and husband, Duke, of Kalispell; and grandsons, Colter and Bridger Goss. Norman Myers, 79
October 20, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Norman Myers, 79

Longtime Kalispell resident Norman Myers passed away peacefully at home among family, Oct. 16, 2010, at the age of 79, after a lengthy illness. A memorial service and celebration of Norman s life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home Norman was born on March 22, 1931, in Eston, Saskatchewan, and was the only child of Thomas and Elizabeth Myers. Although Norm grew up and worked on the family farm, farm life would not be in his future as he developed both asthma and a passion for everything mechanical at an early age. Norm attended the small Montrose Country School as he was growing up, and at the age of 17 left to pursue his passion by taking mechanical courses at the Technical Collegiate, and the University of Saskatchewan, School of Agriculture. This pursuit would lead to his lifelong career as a mechanic, and eventually to his hobby of restoring old tractors and stationary engines. In 1950, at the age of 19, Norman volunteered and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. Norm remained in the RCAF for three years during the Korean conflict, working as an aircraft engine mechanic. During his service time, Norm was stationed first in Ontario, Manitoba, and later in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. It was during his time in Saskatoon, at a local dance, that he met his future wife, lifetime friend and companion, Marion Hope. They married in 1954 in Saskatoon. In 1956, Norm and Marion made the decision to immigrate to the U.S. They moved to Libby where Norm worked for a local lumber mill, and their first child, Dianne, was born. They remained in Libby a few months until 1957, when Norm obtained a job at the John Deere Dealership in Kalispell. Their second child, David, was born in 1958 in Kalispell. Norm subsequently worked as shop foreman for Day Equipment, Pack & Company, and ended his career at Townsend Repair, all in Kalispell. Norman had an excellent work ethic and a reputation as a man and a mechanic who could get the job done. Norm retired in 1997 and did some on his time repair jobs from his own shop, Norm s Repair. Norm enjoyed traveling to auctions and tractor shows and went full bore into restoring old tractors and engines. He was a charter member of the Northwest Antique Power Association and enjoyed assisting with the annual fall tractor shows put on for the community. He also had a passion for aviation stemming from his Air Force days and became a private pilot in 1982. He purchased an old plane which he enjoyed restoring and flew for a few years. Norm s retirement plans were disrupted in 2000 when he suffered two strokes. The years that followed were steadily more difficult, but he still enjoyed talking tractors, weekly breakfasts with friends, visits to Canada to see friends and relatives, and visits to and from his children who reside in Wyoming. His favorite outings during his last few years were his almost daily trips to Cislo s for the best food in town, where he felt the owner and waitresses were the next best thing to family. Although Norman was a Canadian at heart and loved the rolling prairies of Saskatchewan, he also loved the mountainous beauty of his U.S. home and his life in Kalispell. He proudly became a citizen of the U.S. in 2003 after living and working in Montana for over 47 years. Norman is survived by his wife and best friend of 56 years, Marion; daughter, Dianne, and John Stearns of Casper, Wyo.; son, David Myers, of Riverton, Wyo.; and two grandchildren, Justin and Christopher Stearns. Norman is also survived by numerous cousins in England from where his parents had immigrated. Norman asked that donations be made to Hospice or the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department.

Donald Don Michael Whaley, 69

Donald Don Michael Whaley, 69

Don was received by God into his eternal home Sunday, Oct. 17, 2010, after a mercifully quick battle with ALS (Lou Gerhig s disease) diagnosed in June of this year. He would have been 70 years old on Christmas Eve. He precedes his wife of 51 years, Jeannette; two sons, Drew and Joanna of Chatsworth, Calif., and their children, stepson Jason, stepdaughter Veronica, sons, Conner and Sean; and the Rev. Kyle of Polson; two daughters, Sabrina Whaley of Seattle and son Sergei, and Glynis Thakur of Sammamish, Wash., (Dr. Smiley) and sons Asher and Eamon; and Drew s daughter, Brittney of Kalispell, and Andrew Hayes, and Teagan, Brodyn and Macyn. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his prized blessings. He loved his work in the church (LCMS) and in the secular arena for Van Waters & Rogers, agricultural and industrial chemical distributor of Spokane and Billings; as a partner in Dyce Sales & Engineering Service, chemical distributor, Billings; and as the principal consultant in his own firm, Kaltana Corporation, business management consulting, Kalispell and Moses Lake, Wash. As a young man he learned to fly in Grand Coulee, Wash., and he took it up again in Kalispell, earning his commercial and IFR licenses. He earned the coveted Paul Harris Award for years of service in Rotary. According to his wishes, he will be laid to rest at Spring Canyon-Grand Coulee, Wash. There will be a graveside service for family and friends at 11 a.m. and memorial at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at Grace Lutheran Church, 303 Nelson Road, Moses Lake, Wash. The family wishes to thank the Inland Empire ALS Association, Summer Wood care givers, and Central Basin Home Health and Hospice for their loving care while he was ill; also his cribbage playing friends and the employees at Sporty s Pub and Michael s on the Lake for their support and friendship. Donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church; Inland Empire ALS; Central Basin Home Health and Hospice; or a charity of your choosing.

Gene Fopp, 96
October 18, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Gene Fopp, 96

World War II veteran Gene Fopp, 96, of Great Falls, died of an apparent heart attack Saturday at his current residence, Azalea Place Assisted Living. A memorial service will be held in mid-November at Hillcrest Lawn Chapel. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Schnider Funeral Home. Gene was born May 7, 1914, in Somers, to Anton and Mary (Zandanel) Fopp, who emigrated in 1912 from Perarola, Italy, an area close to the Swiss border. He was the second of four sons. He attended local schools and graduated from Flathead County High School in 1932. He attended the University of Montana, graduating with a bachelor s degree in law in 1938 and a juris doctor degree in 1940. He became an FBI agent in Washington, D.C., that same year. He served in field offices in Philadelphia, New York, Salt Lake City, and by request, in the Montana/Idaho division. He married Joan, his college sweetheart, on Oct. 18, 1941, in Great Falls, which allowed a blind date to last 69 years. During his service in the FBI during World War II, he specialized in espionage, sabotage and internal security cases. He was featured as a firearms expert and performed demonstrations of skilled shooting from coast to coast. He also was an inspector s aid and senior resident agent stationed in Great Falls. He had fascinating stories of cases and experiences throughout the U.S. In June 1964, Gene expressed his desire to practice law in Great Falls, and Director J. Edgar Hoover accepted his resignation. Then-Sen. Mike Mansfield made note of this in the Congressional Record. In the practice of law, he specialized in the construction field throughout the United States and devoted considerable time to developing gas/oil, gold mining properties and real estate. He had been a member of the American, Federal, and Montana bar associations, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, the University of Montana Alumni Association and the Meadow Lark Country Club. He and his wife enjoyed traveling worldwide and in the U.S. He was an avid fly fisherman, hunter and golfer. On an elk hunt in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, he was attacked by a charging grizzly bear. He defended his life by shooting and killing the bear at 30 feet. For over 40 years, Gene had a love affair with the Smith River and the property he traversed there for over 50 years. He was confident that the family will continue to be good stewards of the land. He also had a special place in his heart for Adel and is now catching up with his long-missed good friend, Hank Hibbard, as well as his family. One of the other greatest joys of his life was living around the corner from his daughter, Shelley, and taking part in raising his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, the love of his life, Joan (Kennard) Fopp, of Great Falls; daughters, Shelley Liknes and George of Great Falls, and Caroline Fopp of Indiana; and grandchildren, Erin, currently on a medical mission in India, and Kara and Conrad, both of Helena. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael, A.J. and Albert; a half-brother, George; and a daughter, Sandra Paulette Fopp. Condolences for the family may be left online at www.schniderfuneralhome.com.

August F. Buster Schonenberger, 90
October 16, 2010 6:10 a.m.

August F. Buster Schonenberger, 90

August F. Buster Schonenberger, 90, passed away Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at the Columbia Falls Veterans Home. Buster was born Oct. 10, 1920, on the Jules Wenger Ranch in Jackson. He was the third of 12 children born to Fritz and Marguerite (Wenger) Schonenberger. At the age of 13 he left home to work as a ranch hand; at age 21 he enlisted in the 1st Cavalry Division of the Army during World War II. He served in the Philippines, and helped to liberate a large prison in Manila that held nearly 4,000 prisoners, most of whom were Americans. He was decorated with the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and various campaign medals. When he got out of the service, he went to work for the local ranchers in the Big Hole area for a month. He loved the rodeo life and rode bareback and saddle broncs before and after going in the service and, as he said, He was a pretty darned good hand. He quit riding broncs in 1956. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He started mining when he was 26. He mined seven years in Butte, and then worked at various mines ranging from the Arctic Circle to Arizona, even mining several years in the Flathead mines. In 2003, at a ceremony for World War II veterans, Buster received his honorary high school diploma. The family would lovingly tease him that most of his grandchildren graduated from high school before he did. Buster resided at the Columbia Falls Veterans Home for the past several years. He enjoyed living there, walking around the grounds, watching the river roll by, and seeing the roses that grew under his window. He enjoyed the friendship of all the staff and all their teasing and loving kindness. They were so wonderful, especially in his last days. Thank you. He celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by his family and friends. He made this a goal, to get to 90, and have his birthday party. Then he went home to be with the Lord and his loved ones that preceded him. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Krauss, and husband Roger, of Kalispell, and their sons, Shawn and Justin; his daughter, Verna Ivory, and husband Gary, and their daughters, Allicia Harold and husband Rob, Melissa Weckworth, Lisa Diaz and husband Joel, and Danielle Tidwell; and five great-grandchildren. Buster is also survived by five sisters, Helen Barringer of Hamilton, Wash., Martha Taylor and husband Corky of Wenatchee, Wash., Yvonne Tuss and husband Toni of Lewistown, Paula Olsen of Chewelah, Wash., and Shirley Marvin and her husband Charles of Kalispell. He is also survived by dozens of nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Buster will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 18, at the Easthaven Baptist Church, 2010 Whitefish Stage Road, Kalispell, with military honors to follow services at the church. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Buster s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Buster s guest book, offer condolences and share memories

Fred Byron Barker, 91
October 14, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Fred Byron Barker, 91

Fred Byron Barker passed away peacefully Oct. 9, 2010, at Kalispell Regional Medical Center, at the age of 91. He was proud of his age, and especially of living to reach 90. Fred was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Willard, Utah, to Fredrick C. and Rosamond Jensen Barker. He spent his younger years in Willard and then, in 1923, his father moved the family to St. Ignatius. The trip took two weeks and they traveled by covered wagon. Fred received his schooling there and helped his father run the family farm. In September 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed in Jefferson Barracks, Mo., when on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He was then sent to Payne Field, Everett, Wash. There they prepared P-39s to be shipped to Russia. He was shipped to New Orleans Air Force Base but they had no planes. He then went to New York and shipped out on the Queen Elizabeth. He was among the first Americans to go to England. His unit landed in Glasgow, Scotland. England gave the United States a large airfield in Shusman Air Force base with English Spitfire planes (There were still no American planes). At this time, the night raids by the Germans were in full force. When the U.S. troops finally got their planes, Fred s unit was moved to an airfield in Bovington. He spent much of his war years as a crew chief for a P-51 Mustang Squadron in the 8th Air Force. Fred told stories of countless nights he spent repainting the planes to try and keep one step ahead of the Germans. The first colonel he crewed under was killed by enemy fire. Fred went on to be the crew chief for the well-known Lt. Gen. William E. Kepner. In October of 1945, he returned home to Montana, where his father had bought a farm in the Flathead Valley after selling the home place in St. Ignatius. Fred helped his father clear the farm ground and then bought his own place close by. His place was a stump ground, located in the Swan River area northeast of Bigfork. With the help of his father and brother, George, they spent nearly 14 years clearing his land. Clearing the land was a huge undertaking. The land was full of tamarack stumps that required the use of blasting powder to remove them. Because tamarack roots do not rot, there were always lots of sticks to pick every spring year after year. Fred left areas of the farm with the original trees for the protection of the deer and wildlife. He enjoyed watching the mothers and their babies, and was very protective of them. He also had a huge herd of wild turkeys that he loved. He fed hay and grain to them during the winter months. In the early 1950s, he added hogs to his farming. The hog manure was good fertilizer for the land. He raised excellent hogs and regularly topped the market. The Spokane auctioneer would often stop the bidding and say, Now these are Montana hogs. Fred loved his animals and his many dogs. He loved to farm. He would say he always tried to make his farm better each year. Fred believed in keeping his land clean. Weeds were his enemy and he spent many hours diligently rogueing his fields for wild oats, spraying the drain ditches and the edges of his fields. In 1961, he married Kathleen Burtsfield in the Cardston Temple. To that union, there were four children born. The family worked side-by-side for many years and Fred passed on his hard work ethics to his children. He believed hard work built character. Consequently, his kids turned out to be characters who loved to tease him about his farmer humor jokes. He took their teasing in stride for he was truly a farmer out standing in his field. Those who knew him will miss his grizzly bear- and wild poacher- chasing stories. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his daughter, Julia Barker, of Salt Lake City; son, Byron, and his wife, Lonni, and children, Holland, Greer, Reese and Kean, of Eagle, Idaho; son, Craig, and his wife, Melissa, and children, Zach, Kyle and Brandon, also of Eagle; and daughter, Korrine Howard, and children, Addison and Cessaley, of Sandy, Utah. Also surviving are his sister, Marie Cozzetto, of Spokane; and his brother, George, and his wife, Marion, of Canmore, Alberta. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rosamond Caroline, Barbara, Julia and Rosa; and brothers, Clark, Jack, Stanley and Alan. The family would like to thank those close friends and neighbors who provided care, concern and acts of kindness to him over the years. They would especially like to express their deepest gratitude to Fred s longtime friend and neighbor, Alvin Gordon. Fred was able to stay in his home and enjoy the beauty of his farm up until just days before his passing due to Alvin s daily care. They appreciate the love and service he extended to Fred. The family requests donations be made to your favorite charity. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at Conrad Memorial Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Johnson-Gloschat Mortuary. Johnson - Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Fred s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Fred s guest book, offer condolences and share memories.

Nola Brown Bradley, 73

Nola Brown Bradley of Kalispell, formally Asheville, N.C., passed away on October 4, 2010 of natural causes and is now home with the Lord. Nola was born on Jan. 30, 1937, in Spring Creek, N.C., to Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Z. Brown, now deceased. She was a very devoted mother of three children. Mom was our hero; she was always encouraging us to do more, learn more and give openly to God and community. Mom loved to garden, travel, camp and hike, and shared her love for Jesus Christ. Mom's love extended to all those around her. She sacrificed many years of her life, giving up all she had to raise her children with precious love and devotion. She was a beautiful, perfect example of what a true, loving mother is in all she did. The family of Nola will plan a celebration of her life at a later date in North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial may be made to the Nola Bradley Memorial Fund, made payable to Zack Bradley, at 141 Splendid View Drive, Kalispell, MT, to assist the family with funeral expenses.

Peggy Aurand, 80

Peggy Aurand, 80, passed away peacefully on Oct. 6, 2010, at the Whitefish Care and Rehabilitation Center. Peggy was born on March 8, 1930, in Singleshot, Mont., to Norman and Elma Heindel. The lovely child attended school until the eighth grade. She had to be tough as she had three rowdy brothers " Gordon, Norman and Dale " to contend with. She had dreams of joining the military and being a nurse for the soldiers. One fateful day when she was 17 years old, she was visiting her cousin when a young gentleman called to visit the household. Upon joining the pinochle game, Charles Aurand was introduced to Peggy and the rest, as they say, is history. Six weeks later, on March 5, 1949, the two were joined in marriage at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. It is said that two old maids down the street, sure of some impropriety, were hoping to do some finger counting to account for the whirlwind courtship, but were sadly disappointed. The young couple lived with her parents for a while until they moved to Snowslip and then to Essex. While there, they were blessed with three children, Janet, Daniel and Charlene. After the big flood of 1964, they moved to Nimrod. In 1979 the family then moved to Lake Five where they lived until the children moved out, they then moved to Columbia Heights. As they got older and needed help with daily things, they moved in with their daughter Charlene, and then eventually to the Colonial Manor. Peggy was fun-loving and full of life. She enjoyed fly fishing and loved to sing. She was especially good at taking care of people and their needs and would gladly make any sacrifice to help those in need. Always maintaining a sense of humor, she had many an adventure worth repeating, but one stands out as a testament to her good grace. While snow skiing with her husband one day, she hit a bump and fell into a snow bank, headfirst. It took a little while to get her out because Charlie was laughing so hard at the sight of her two legs kicking in the air. She let him live. Peggy is survived by her son, Daniel; daughter, Charlene; and her brothers, Gordon, Norman and Dale. She was preceded in death by both her parents; her husband, Charlie; and her daughter, Janet. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 10, at Glacier Memorial Gardens. Please bring your own chairs and umbrellas. Johnson - Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for Peggy s family. You are invited to go to www.jgfuneralhome.com to view Peggy s guest book, offer condolences and share memories.

Charles Bryan Chuck Gough, 73
October 8, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Charles Bryan Chuck Gough, 73

Chuck Gough died Oct. 3, 2010, while traveling in Europe with his beloved wife Kay, as they celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary with a trip to Italy and Croatia. We are still reeling from his unexpected death, and because we all loved him so much our hearts are aching, but we gain some peace knowing he died as he lived, with passion, adventure and a zest for life. Chuck was born on Jan. 22, 1937, on the family farm in Canova, S.D., originally homesteaded by his grandparents and then farmed by his parents, Hazel and Jennings Gough. He was the third of four children, with two older sisters, Ardath and Joyce, and a younger brother, Dennis. Chuck was born with a strong work ethic, and grew up working the farm alongside his family, driving the tractor or the combine, raising cattle, hunting pheasants and fostering a love for horses which he shared with his father. Chuck contracted polio while showing his prized Hereford cattle at the state fair and spent months in the hospital, making a full recovery during a time when many weren t so fortunate. His iron will and strength served him well in his life as he battled health issues more recently in his life. After graduating with honors from University of South Dakota with a degree in accounting, he went on to get his CPA, moving to Minneapolis and eventually becoming a full partner at a prestigious international accounting firm. This work opened the door to his love for travel. Chuck transferred to Tokyo, Japan, in 1967, the first of several overseas homes. Chuck married Kay Knox, the love of his life, who joined him in Tokyo and they later moved to Brussels, Belgium, and then on to Stockholm, Sweden. They took every opportunity to travel while living overseas before settling in Dallas. Once in Texas he started several successful real estate, home building, and property management ventures. In his free time he raised cutting horses, starting Jennings Corporation in honor of his father. In retirement, Chuck and Kay discovered and fell in love with Bigfork. Chuck loved Bigfork! Chuck threw himself into work on numerous nonprofits and boards and he was often hard to pin down, as he donated countless hours of service to the community, sharing his expertise and willingness to give of himself. He truly enjoyed his family, loved golfing, boating on Flathead Lake and spending time with the many wonderful, new friends he made in this community. Chuck is survived by his wife, Kay, and five children who all adored him and who will miss him tremendously. Sons are Steven and Mary of Kearney, Neb., and John and Sarah of San Francisco; and daughters are Kristin and Bill of Polson, Jane and Keith of Hampton, Minn., and Rachel and Kurt of Seattle. Chuck was the doting grandfather to his many grandchildren who truly loved him; they are Wally, Brian, Ben, David, Eli, Connor, Shaylee, Luke, Kate, Bennett and Talon. Chuck taught all of us to play canasta and Texas Hold Em. A family gathering never passed without a late night card game and someone going all in against Grandpa; he was the one to beat. He instilled in all of his children his love of family and his beliefs that you need to work hard, play hard, always do your best, and be honest. We won t ever forget his values, his love, or his memory. He will be dearly missed. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, at Community United Methodist Church in Bigfork, (750 Electric Ave., Bigfork, MT 59911). In lieu of flowers, please consider a tax deductible gift in Chuck s memory to: Friends of Bigfork Fire Department, P.O. Box 2333, Bigfork, MT 59911.

Sandra Kay (Milne) Schloss, 71
October 6, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Sandra Kay (Milne) Schloss, 71

Sandra Kay (Milne) Schloss, 71, of Orofino, Idaho, was called home by God on Oct. 2, 2010, after a lengthy and courageous battle against the ravaging effects of scleroderma, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Sandy was born Jan. 24, 1939, to Allan and Wanda Milne in Kalispell. She was raised in nearby Somers at the upper end of Flathead Lake and attended schools in both communities. She completed two years at the University of Montana in Missoula. Sandy married Donald Jenni of Bozeman, and had four children " two sons and two daughters. The marriage ended in divorce. She was later remarried to the true love of her life, Bob Schloss, of Orofino, in 1975. They would remain inseparable and committed to each other for the next 35 years, spending 18 of those years in Silver City, N.M., before returning to Orofino in 1996 to build her forever house. Sandy had worked extensively in the medical field as front office coordinator for numerous doctors and as a dental assistant for 15 years in New Mexico. Since her return to Orofino, her interests centered around assisting in the management of a very fine local physical therapy clinic. Her extensive knowledge and familiarization with medical terminology and procedures lead to a home after-hours transcription service with doctors in lucrative practices back east, up to just before her death. She truly enjoyed her work and always considered her activities as challenging and educational. Sandy was a devoted mother to her four children (and any other child in the vicinity) and managed to nurture her flock while holding down full time jobs. Her homes were immaculate and no one was treated as a stranger; all were welcome. She loved to play her piano, and if you listened, you could hear the beautiful music as she practiced for church services every Sunday. She was a truly extraordinary person who willingly gave and shared with others. Sandy loved her family, the many dogs in her life (all were thought of as puppies, even at age 15), her hummingbirds, gardening and roses, her music, nearly all wild critters, just about everyone she ever met, and her morning cup of coffee. Above all, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. All who have known this special woman have been truly blessed. There will be a hole in our lives. Rest well, our beloved. Sandy was preceded in death by an older baby sister, Heather; and both parents, Allan and Wanda Milne. She is survived by her devoted husband, Bob; younger sister, Sharon; her two sons, Michael and Jeffery; daughters, Kandace and Heather; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a true puppy named Bugs. By request, cremation has taken place. Donations may be made to her special little house of worship, Wells Bench Community Church, 1850 Crow Bench Road, Orofino, ID 83544. A celebration of life will be held on Sandy s birthday, Jan. 24, at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel, Orofino. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel & Crematory is in care of arrangements.

Arthur Gene Art Williams, 64
October 6, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Arthur Gene Art Williams, 64

On Oct. 3, 2010, Art passed from this world to the other side, leaving his friends and family. He was born on Dec. 16, 1945, in Salt Lake City to Clyde Oliver Williams and Mary Elizabeth (Buck) Williams. Early in 1946 he moved to Creston, where his dad had lived and worked for several years prior to his entering the U.S. Army in 1935, where he served his country proudly until his discharge in 1945. Arthur liked the country life and was joined by his sister Mary Kathleen in 1947. They remained in Creston until his parents built a home in Kalispell around 1949-50. He attended Cornelius Hedges School until 1955 when his dad built a home on the northeast side of town. He attended Edgerton School from the fourth through sixth grades, and junior high school at the old Central School and Linderman. In 1964, he graduated from Flathead County High School and went to work with the Forest Service. When winter came he worked for Lee Rothweiler at Lee s Glass Shop, and later for Jackson Machine Shop. Art enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and on Jan. 30, 1966, he shipped out for boot camp in San Diego, followed by Damage Control Class A school at Treasure Island, San Francisco, and Petroleum Handlers School in San Pedro, Calif. He was assigned to a fleet gasoline oiler (USS Patapsco AOG-1) stationed in Honolulu and serving the troops up and down the Vietnam coast. Upon his discharge he remained in Honolulu. Art worked several jobs, his favorite " taxi and limousine driver " as well as being an auto parts wholesale distribution warehouse man. He enjoyed the Islands, and the music of Hawaii became a big part of his life. He also loved the foods available and experiencing the various ethnic lifestyles. In 1985, Art returned to Kalispell to care for his mom. He worked at Buffalo Hills Golf Course for several years, Semitool for a while, then an independent contractor for transfer of rental vehicles. He worked at Evergreen School District as a custodian for several years, and retired a few years after his mom passed on. He was most recently employed by the Kalispell Eagles as custodian until his health began to fail. In 1992 Art joined the Moose Lodge and served the lodge through the offices, attaining governor in 2000. His greatest honor was going to Chicago in 2000 to represent Kalispell as lodge governor at the 112th annual International Convention. Meeting with others and sharing ideas for the betterment of the lodge, as well as the camaraderie of his fellow members was a great thrill. In September of 2003, Art proudly and humbly accepted and was conferred the Fellowship Degree. With his passing, he leaves numerous friends he has made over the years; his sister, Kathy McKerrow, and her family, in Floweree; and his loving companion for the past few years, Kawika, his cat. A special thank you to Dr. Welch and the staff at Kalispell Regional Medical Center for the care and compassion Art received. Art requests any memorials be made to the Kalispell Moose Lodge No. 1922, P.O. Box 5286, Kalispell, MT 59903; or to the charity of your choice. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Contact the Kalispell Moose Lodge for additional information.

James Stewart Payne, 86

Dr. James Stewart Payne was born on July 6, 1924, in Seattle. He died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at the Veterans Home in Columbia Falls, of natural causes. He was raised in Great Falls and graduated from Great Falls High School. His education was continued at what was then Montana State College in Bozeman. They married June 25, 1947 and then moved to Memphis, Tenn., where Jim attended the Southern School of Optometry. After graduating, Dr. Payne practiced his profession in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and then, missing their Montana roots, moved his family to Great Falls. Dr. Payne was an optometrist in Great Falls for about 40 years and retired in 1992 to the Flathead Valley. Jim was in the Army Air Corps during World War II and flew on B-29s. His fond memories of his military days include flying and riding his motorcycle back and forth from Montana to Texas. He got back to his love of flying in the 60s with his Cessna 180 and then his Bonanza. Jim was a president of the Montana Pilots Association and enjoyed many fly-ins with friends and family. That led to another hobby, ham radio. He got involved in the testing process for new operators, sharing his love of electronics and making new friends. A talented and creative person, Jim was known for his woodworking skills and the four homes he helped design and build in Great Falls and Lakeside. He did beautiful cabinetry and loved to draw house plans. All of his projects would have to be put on hold though, when it came to hunting season. An avid hunter, it was the bird hunting at Freeze Out Lake that he really got a kick out of with his faithful Chesapeake retrievers, Gunner and Max. He was a lifelong member of the NRA. As a member of the Masons and then the Shriners, he also participated in many a parade as part of the Motosiki Tauf. Jim and Dorothy were always criss-crossing the country in his latest RV or camper, loving to travel and visit with their many friends and relatives. He loved his association with the Rocky Mountain Rollers and the Good Sam Club. There was not a road in this country that he didn t have a curiosity about. Dr. Payne was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Helen Lease Payne; infant brother, Harold; and brother, Jerry. He will be missed by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy; daughter, Sharilee, and husband, Pete Putzier, of Somers; daughter, Janice, and husband, Dave Skolnick, of Alameda, Calif.; son, Jim, of Lakeside; and son, Steve, of Somers; his grandchildren in Boise, Idaho, Jarame Ell and Shelly, and their sons, Caleb and Jonah, Jami Cureton and Scott, and their sons, Gabrielle and Archer, and Suzanna Smith and Forrest, and their children, Zoe and Orion, of Lawrenceburg, Ky. Carter Lee Fritz, 68

Carter Lee Fritz passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at the age of 68. He was born on Sept. 9, 1942, in Kalispell, to Earl and Lotella (Teddy) Fritz. He graduated from Flathead County High School and attended Montana State University in Bozeman. Carter served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves. He married Cheryl de Yong in June 1968. As a lifelong dairy farmer, he received recognition for raising Rainbow, a 3-year-old cow that made the top 10 percent in milk production in the nation; and raising Valley High, a reserve champion in the Black and White 5-year-old division at the state show in Bozeman. Carter won the Jaycee Young Farmer of the Year, and served on several state dairy committees. In his later years, he diversified his farm to include camelina, canola and field corn. With the field corn, Carter envisioned the Corn Maze, which is now an annual event run by his son, Chris, on the original Fritz Farm. When Carter was in high school, he received the State Farmer degree, Dairy Proficiency award and Farm Mechanics award in FFA. His dedication to youth, agriculture and leadership led him to serve as an FFA Advisory Committee member from the beginning of its creation and 47 years as a 4-H leader. Carter s greatest joys were his family and farming. He and Cheryl were married 42 years and he loved his family of four sons and a daughter. He spent countless hours with his eight grandchildren. Carter enjoyed hiking in Glacier National Park and photographing the beauty that surrounded him. Carter is survived by his wife; son Kevin and Shilo, son Kirk and Ivanna, son Jeremy and Lindsay, son Chris and Heidi, all of Kalispell; daughter, Suzanne (Willis) and Jason of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers; and eight grandchildren, Anika, Aidan, Abby, Kaylee, Miley, Ian, Lance and Audrianna. Carter was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kalispell, with a reception following the service. Memorials are suggested to local 4-H programs or the FFA program.

Grace (Tibke) Hanson, 93
October 3, 2010 6:10 a.m.

Grace (Tibke) Hanson, 93

Grace (Tibke) Hanson, 93, of Kalispell and Cut Bank, yielded the call by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to her eternal home, surrounded by her family, on Sept. 28, 2010, at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, of natural causes. Services are pending at this time and will be announced by the Whitted Funeral Chapel of Cut Bank. Grace was born Dec. 1, 1916, to Jacob and Sena Tibke in Blackfoot, Idaho; she was the eighth of 10 children. While Grace was 5 years old, the family relocated from Blackfoot to the family ranch in Cascade. A country girl at heart, she loved riding her horse Gypsy, 4-H, school, friends, picnics and especially family. While active in 4-H, Grace represented the state of Montana in Chicago at the National 4-H Convention. While in Chicago attending the National Convention, she was awarded National First Place in judging home furnishing, today called home interior decorating. In the summer of 1934, her family relocated to Kalispell and continued to farm and ranch. Grace often lamented about leaving Cascade just prior to her senior year. She affectionately told how the family s livestock and home furnishings were shipped via the railroad and unloaded at Rose Crossing in Helena Flats, just adjacent to the family farm. Her education was a priority and finishing high school a must; she recanted fond memories of driving the family Model A automobile to Flathead County High School to complete her senior year, graduating in 1935. Grace began working for Mrs. Schweitzer as her personal assistant, and then later relocated to Choteau to work for Dr. E. Maynard at his office and hospital. While employed with Dr. Maynard she met the love of her life, Henry Hanson. Grace Tibke and Henry Hanson were married June 30, 1939, at the Pondera Valley Lutheran Church in Conrad. From this blessed union a beloved son, Charles, was born. Together they farmed at Choteau and north of Cut Bank. In 1950, they sold the land in Choteau and farmed full time in the Cut Bank area. Her devotion to the family farm continued until her death, active in the decisions of the family farm up to the day Jesus Christ called her home. She was dedicated to the family farm; more importantly, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is now eternally reunited with Henry, as he was suddenly taken from her in 1980, the result of a drunk driver. Grace also worked for the Glacier County Library for eight years. After her son graduated from high school, she and Henry spent 26 winters in Arizona. She was an avid traveler and ready to go at a moment s notice. She traveled to Europe, New Zealand and Australia, Central America sailing through the Panama Canal, three trips visiting the Caribbean Islands, and visited every state except Texas. Grace was a Christian woman in every sense: Lived by faith, served others, and never uttered an unkind word; a constant follower of Christ. She was a member of the Cut Bank St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bible study and worship, Faith Circle, quilting ministry, Ladies Aid Society, food bank ministry, Thrivent for Lutherans, W.E.L.O., and the Cut Bank Women s Club. Grace had a beautiful voice and loved to sing hymns and study God s word. Being a benevolent giver to countless Christian ministries, she also sponsored numerous children through Compassion International and World Vision. A cherished ministry that came full circle was to Immanuel Lutheran Home. Grace relocated three years ago to Buffalo Hill Terrace, then in April of this year to Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; parents, Jacob and Sena Tibke; brothers, Lester, Roland, Donald and Douglas; and sisters, Bernice, Margaret, Mayme and Juanita. Surviving Grace are her son, Charles; daughter-in-love, Denise; her prized grandchildren, Bailey Joseph and Christyne Danae; and her baby sister, Betty Held, all of Kalispell and Cut Bank; and several nieces and nephews.

Joanne Carol Barrie, 58

Joanne Carol Barrie, 58, was welcomed into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, after a courageous nine-month battle with cancer. Joanne was born March 27, 1952, in Aberdeen, S.D., the only child of George and Wilma Faeth. Joanne lived in South Dakota, Minnesota and Arkansas before moving to Kalispell in 1968. She graduated from Flathead High School in 1970, where she met her lifelong love, Lloyd Barrie. Joanne and Lloyd were married in July of 1972 and moved to Bozeman to continue college studies. In 1974 she returned to Kalispell for the birth of their son, Matthew. Joanne postponed her studies for 25 years to stay at home as a nurturing mother to Matt, Rachel and Elise. In the mid-1990s, she returned to the University of Great Falls to complete her B.A. in psychology and her masters of psychological counseling in 2000. Joanne established Cross-Life Counseling services and touched many lives over the past 10 years. Joanne s deep love and devotion to Christ not only led her into the counseling ministry, but also bore fruit through her ministries within the body of Christ at Bread of Life. Ever dedicated to her brothers and sisters in Christ, her service in worship, fellowship and discipleship were a constant encouragement and source of strength for her church family. Joanne enjoyed traveling with her family; trips across Europe, train adventures on the Empire Builder, and especially the beaches of Florida, where she delighted in searching for seashells. Cooking was a demonstration of love for Joanne. Family and friends enjoyed many memorable dinners in her home. She also treasured evening walks with Lloyd through the east side of Kalispell and weekly pinochle games with friends. Joanne is survived by her parents, George and Wilma Faeth of Nampa, Idaho; husband, Lloyd Barrie of Kalispell; son, Matthew of Kalispell; daughter, Rachel and son-in-law, Travis Steindorf, of Kalispell; daughter, Elise of Missoula; and grandchildren, Adam, Jasper and Grace, whom she dearly loved. She is also survived by her aunt, Pat Faeth of Aberdeen, S.D.; and cousin, Duane and Darlene Robinson of Miller, S.D. A celebration of life service for Joanne will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. A reception will follow at Bread of Life Church, 544 Fifth Ave. W., Kalispell. Friends are encouraged to visit the website www.buffalohillfh.com to leave notes of condolence and support for the family. Buffalo Hill Funeral Home is caring for the family.
