A recent “guest column” in the Inter Lake proclaimed “D.C. politics hurts Montana wildland firefighters.” The column started off appropriate enough, expressing concern for wildfire funding; however, the author soon launched into a rant against Montana Sen. OPINION: Rail park marks new era for Kalispell
Kalispell saw a genesis of new industry and hope on New Year’s Day, 1892, with the arrival of the first train into town. In that era, railroads were renowned for the prosperity they brought to a town, and Flathead residents moved quickly to take advantage of that promise. Droves of residents moved their Demersville homes northward to Kalispell, inching them along on logs, to be closer to the new hub of commerce. Overnight, Demersville became a ghost town.

Dump Trump
I never thought I’d see the day when Bob McClellan would praise a Republican. Yet in a letter a few months ago addressing Trump’s popularism, McClellan seemed to praise Trump for his fight against “big money” (the same big money Trump freely admits to using when necessary to buy political influence both Democrat and Republican and the very influence McClellan so despises). He also described Trump’s “appealing rhetoric.”

OPINION: Montanans deserve a chance for school choice
Montana’s public schools do a great job for most students. But as every parent knows, children aren’t all the same. One likes to run; the other likes to sit in a corner with a book. One likes to play video games; the other prefers football. And while most may do well in public schools, there are some who do not. Unfortunately, nearly 2,000 students drop out of Montana schools each year.

OPINION: The 'grizzly killing fields': An irresponsible idea
In recent weeks, area papers have run the article “States divvy up Yellowstone-area grizzly hunt,” noting that Wyoming will get 58 percent of the body count, Montana 34 percent, and Idaho 8 percent. With grizzlies still listed as “threatened,” and likely to remain so for years to come despite efforts by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to prematurely delist them, it’s unseemly, irresponsible, and unnecessary for state wildlife agencies to begin dividing up the “killing fields” for this iconic species.

There are few things Democrats and Republicans in Washington can agree upon. One is that the Western wildfire problem has gotten out of control. From the overwhelming firefighting costs to the amount of acres at high fire risk due to challenges of drought, insects and fuels build-up, the issue has ballooned like the actual fires themselves. Solutions, however, have been hard to find.

LETTER: Obama shows real strength

It was clear from his speech last night that Obama seems mystified by the amount of dysfunction inside of the political world. He shouldn’t be as he is part (or most of) the problem. Our acrimonious political world and, collaterally, our divided country are and will be his legacy. And to a large degree this stems from Obama’s background as he is the first person elected president coming from a totally dysfunctional family.

COLUMN: 'Affluenza' a symptom of sick society
I’ve been following with great interest and even greater disgust the case of the Texas teenager whose defense for killing four people in a drunk-driving accident was “affluenza” — he was too rich to know right from wrong.

LETTER: Repudiate all 'radical religion'
Republicans rightly chastised Democrats for not frankly calling out “radical Islamic terrorism” after brutal attacks in Paris and California. I agree that ideologically motivated massacres should be vehemently and universally disavowed.
LETTER: Claims about Obama called lies
To reader Glen Hook of Kalispell who spewed regurgitated years-old, extreme right-wing baloney about President Obama being Muslim: Give it up, loser.
