The 2015 fire season was unprecedented on the Kootenai National Forest. When the fires broke out on Aug. 10 and 14, we wondered if a fire season this big would be the result. Conditions were ripe for the extreme fire activity we observed, due to the minimal winter snowpack, lack of spring rains and little to no precipitation over the last couple of months.

Really.

OPINION: Aerial observer says fire response was fast, effective
The truth can sometimes be elusive, from afar. But sometimes one gets a “ringside seat” to the truth of events. Having had such a close-up view, I would like to respond to the several “let it burn” comments I have been reading lately in the Inter Lake, regarding the Flathead National Forest’s supposed response to the recent wildland fires in this historic fire season of 2015.
Flowers, forbs, fauna to follow fires
After the burn
A week after an inch of rain finally put the brakes on the fast-spreading Bear Creek and Trail Creek fires on Flathead National Forest, broad swaths of the forest looked like a blighted moonscape — charred, limbless snags rising from the blackened ground that was pockmarked by stump holes where whole Douglas firs and ponderosa pines were reduced to ash.

EDITORIAL: Planning for future not a bad thing

COLUMN: Actually, there IS more to fear than fear itself
It was the great historian Arnold Toynbee who said “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder.” That puts it very well, and takes the blame off the Islamists or the Mexicans, and puts it squarely on ourselves. If this country, this civilization is going to perish, then it will be because we sacrificed our values, and laughed at our principles — not because a few thousand terrorists or a few million Mexicans crossed our borders.

LETTER: Zinke is right about forest management
I applaud Rep. Ryan Zinke for his efforts to achieve a common sense approach to forest health rather than the all-or-none approach of environmentalists AND some loggers. The extreme views of either no logging at all on national forests — even salvage of dead trees — or clear cutting represent the polar opposites of a problem that is easily solved with intelligent compromise.
